Happy Moms Make for Happy Kids

Kids these days are happier when Mom's content in her relationship with her partner, but their bliss is less dependent on Dad's relationship satisfaction, a new study based in the United Kingdom suggests.
The findings, announced Saturday (April 2), are based on a sample of 6,441 women, 5,384 men and 1,268 children ages 10 to 15.

Overall, 60 percent of young people reported being "completely satisfied" with their family situation, while that number dropped to 55 percent in families with a mother who was unhappy in her relationship. And for kids of moms who were happy in their relationships, the "completely satisfied" group rose to 73 percent.

The ingredients for the most chipper children included: living with two parents (either biological or stepparents); having no younger siblings; not quarrelling with their parents regularly; eating at least three evening meals per week with their family; and having a mother who is happy in her relationship with her husband or cohabiting partner.

As for Mom and Dad, their overall happiness seemed to decline with the duration of their relationship, with that downward slope being steeper for women than men. In fact, overall women were less happy in their relationships than men. In addition, other factors being equal, couples without children reported the greatest satisfaction with their relationships, while those with a preschool child were least happy.

However, a global study published in the March issue of the journal Population and Development Review suggested that kids make parents happier eventually, with bigger families bringing parents joy in midlife.
Among men, being unemployed was associated with lower levels of happiness in their relationship with their partner.

"Together, these findings reveal the complex influences of different family relationships on a child's happiness," said researcher Maria Iacovou of the Institute for Social and Economic Research.

The results are part of the Understanding Society survey, which is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and is expected to follow families for 20 years.

Fair enough. I've actually read that people who were in happy marriages marry sooner after they were widowed than people who were neutral or unhappy. Something about the attitude toward marriage being positive, and they would like to be in that same "happy place" quicker. That's definitely not to say anything about people who had happy marriages that ended in death and did not remarry soon, like your mom. I don't think I could if something ever happened to my husband, God forbid. It's just a statistical likelihood.

Three months is quick, but I suppose necessary to stave off an impending breakdown, if that's what Art felt.

And I think they've done studies about your last point -- the gender thing. It's been theorized that men (at least of that generation and older) need to feel cared for and are better off health-wise with the companionship.

Not to hijack the "meme" thread, though I didn't ROTF, I really did LOL. Nice one.   ;D
I think Fort Rock has become a meme. Credit to whoever posted that in the meme thread.

I do feel sorry for him based on those two posts from other forums you posted, though. But it's still no excuse for all the lies.

What a horrifying tragedy, guild. Damn!

I had to laugh at the first post about Farrell's, though. When my sister was about 7 or 8 we went to Farrell's and she got up on the table and sang Happy Birthday to herself. We were just talking about that this weekend, again celebrating her birthday.

I like your speculation, anagrammy. Whatever happened, I am sure he was wracked with guilt.

A common trope on the comments of the link you posted was speculation that Art had already begun chatting with Airyn online prior to Ramona's death. Pre-cheating as one person put it. I wonder if that contributed to the possible fight that ultimately led to her demise. That would certainly increase the guilt factor on Art's part.

Honestly, if Art's behavior after 2006 is strange is strange to you, then you have not paid attention to Art Bell's behavior at all ever.

get married and move to an island? he's done both many, many times. he did it again. Asia was his fourth kid, Airyn was his fourth wife.

you know what they say, history repeats itself!
Yeah, and he has a type, too. I think it's strange for him to get married three months after the love of his life died unexpectedly. Regardless if he has had multiple marriages. He may have had his reasons, but it's still bizarre.

I don't know where this is coming from, space or somewhere else, but Art will announce sometime in March his plans to return to the air! An announcement is coming soon!

The only thing Fort Rock has gotten correct is an announcement of an announcement. It proves nothing.

He has submitted multiple postings claiming to have insider knowledge. He has failed to provide a shred of evidence. He was handed an opportunity to legitimize his claims by responding to Michael V.'s challenge of his alleged UnknownCountry.com affiliation. Again, he failed to do so. How many inflammatory statements is one allowed to make before they are called on the carpet for them?

This message board was built on wit, snark, sarcasm, and questioning. If you are going to make a provocative statement, be prepared to defend your position. I'm sure Fort Rock knows exactly what he is doing -- dropping in every several posts to stoke the coals, then watch the flames of reactions. He is hardly an innocent harbinger of Art Bell's intentions; I think he very much enjoys the attention he is receiving.

Some of those comments were crazy. Accusing Art of murder? Or passively letting his wife die. Very disturbing.

I agree it seems strange to marry a woman young enough to be your granddaughter less than three months after your "soulmate" dies, but it's a huge leap to accuse him of orchestrating his wife's death.

Someone on another thread said something about Linda Moulton Howe sounding like she was on the toilet once during an interview. These people really need to learn how to evacuate their bowels before they go on air. It's so unprofessional.
#74
Fortunately no harm will come to George since there are no coincidences. But that would be funny if he crapped his pants on air. And said something about it, so we'd know.

The hospital check-in reminds me of people who leave cryptic messages like "OMG, was just in an accident", or "something really bad just happened", and then they don't post an update for hours. Some people just get off on the attention and the worried responses.

I have heard of people targeting people's houses when they check in elsewhere, or when they post they are going on vacation. I'm not sure if there have been documented cases of that actually happening, but even if not, I wouldn't want to be the first of that statistic.

Another idea is we all set a time and try to make his heart stop. Sort of like "men who stare at goats" Norry style. Maybe he would at least crap his pants on the air. And if his heart did stop... well, we just had the worlds first coincidence.

If you don't have anything nice to say... come sit by me!

Welcome to the board. I am also down for a petition/email bombing of whoever needs bombed. It's time for George to go.

The Facebook check-in feature is so pathetic. I agree with your thoughts on that one, JustOneFix.

Maybe people could put their phone down for a few minutes and actually enjoy the time they are spending with the people they tag in their check-in.

Facebook is one big clusterfuck of the same people posting the same things. It's like everyone carves out their own little personaes; one girl only posts pictures of her body and food dishes, one only posts about how much she loves being a mommy, one guy posts Bible verses, another (white) girl posts rap lyrics... to reference what Usagi said above.

I should just delete it but I feel guilty about losing contact with long-lost relatives.

What is FML?

And I completely agree with the Russian thing! It's so played out and lame.

Edited to add: POIDH (pics or it didn't happen).

Also, DIAF and DIAGF have been making a comeback. And that's "die in a fire", and "die in a grease fire", respectively.

Paranormal - Conspiracy - UFOs - Etc. / mothman
April 10, 2011, 12:05:06 AM
The Mothman is another paranormal favorite of mine. I actually first heard of it from the movie, The Mothman Prophecies. I rewatched it a few weeks ago -- it's not that bad of a movie! Yeah, some if the details are off, but still. It got me interested.

I don't really have anything to add, but thanks for bringing the topic up. I may have to make a trip to Powell's for a used Mothman book. ;)

Yes. I was coming here to post that, as well. That show has so many double and triple entendres -- you could watch the seasons multiple times and catch something new every time.

I like Kitchen Nightmares on Hulu. Chef Ramsey is abrasive, but that's why it works.

Also: Dexter.

I love the amount of hubris it takes for someone to assume aliens are after their DNA. Like they are the ultimate specimen of human. The aliens pass up the likes of Hugh Jackman/George Clooney/Gerard Butler/whoever else is the super hot hottie of the moment, yet they can't wait to scoop up the mansludge of Whitley Strieber.

It's either that or they're masquerading a desire to be anally penetrated, under the guise of abduction and non-consent.

Thank you, Treading Water. I'm so sorry you have to experience that. I can't imagine. Both my husband and my brother have sleep paralysis. My husband has also told me it most frequently happens while he
is on his back. He tries to move his arm the same way you described. I asked him if he's ever sensed anything flying around -- he said no, but once there was something running around back and forth at the foot of the bed. He also mentioned it happens a lot when he goes to bed particularly exhausted.

Of course most if the medical literature chalks it ip to something physiological, but I was curious if you guys think it's something beyond that. I mean the sheer terror of it, and the sense of a being flying around, running, or an old hag, etc... that seems to point to something beyond the mind's tricks.

I think if Fort Rock responds to everyone's accusations, especially Michael V.'s confron, he will just say his identity is being protected or something. But he has likely just quietly bowed out, never to be heard from again.

Nevertheless,  the Desert scorpion army is assembling!!!

I'm wondering how long this charade will continue...

If you recall, Fort Rock, in March you posted that Art would make an announcement that month. Nada. Tick tock.

Quote from: Fort Rock on April 07, 2011, 07:25:09 PMI have not been given permission by those I report to, to allow independent verification of information I share! That would involve sharing of email addresses, phone numbers, and a private back-channel email address used by Whitley Strieber to contact his volunteer reporters for www.unknowncountry.com
Then why not send it to one person, like Michael V? He could verify if it's legitimate, without divulging the information publicly.

Also, you can't reveal your sources, but it's a-OK to air their secrets? Do they know you're going on a public forum and blasting all this for the world to see?
