Lovely Bones

If you've never seen "A Face in the Crowd," you've never seen the best of Andy Griffith.

I still remember staying home sick one day during high school and watching the 70s movie "Salvage" on TBS.  It featured AG as a junkman who builds a rocket out of old junk, flies to the moon, snatches the lunar lander, then flies back home only to have second thoughts about the whole thing.  Goofy shit, but fun to watch.

O sheriff! My sheriff!

Of course, "A Face In The Crowd" is what all the media commentators thought they had to mention as being his crown jewel.... "go figure" as to why ... I DO have it on DVD, but now I might have to throw it out, like I do with most things when other people "discover" my precious secrets  ::) ;)
Of course, I love "The Andy Griffith Show" and can recite large parts of many episodes (and as sucky as the 3 color seasons were, they were still better than 99% of stuff on TV today).

But here's one y'all might not know.   Try a little made-for-TV gem called "Pray For The Wildcats" from about 1974, which cast Andy as a psychotic rich corporate guy who was being courted by 3 guys from some ad company or something like that.  The 3 company guys:  a post-"Trek" SHATNER, Mike "ROBERT REED" Brady, and-- here's a blast from your TV past--  MARJOE GORTNER.
Like all TV movies from 1974, it involved a motorcycle trip down the Baja California -- and as the 4 guys go farther down the Baja, the more "wild" Andy gets in a made-for-TV corporate "Colonel Kurtz" kinda way.
Hippies and Andy-attempted-rape and violence and death and motorcycle duels including Shatner all ensue.
And if all THAT don't make you interested---  go join Cheney in his crypt.  :P :P :P

20-years ago, I worked for an NBC TV affiliate in eastern North Carolina.  Now the Friday night after Thanksgiving is one of television's most watched nights, so a lot of local affiliates bump the network programming and run a movie - they get to sell all local ads that way and make more money.  One year my station did that.

On Monday morning, the General Manager got a phone call from a viewer.
Viewer - "We had the family gathered around the TV Friday night and sure were disappointed to not see Matlock."
GM - "Well, sometimes we air alternative programming."
Viewer - "Well, see, this sure was a good one, so the family really wanted to watch it."
The GM paused - "Who is this?"
Viewer - "Andy Griffith."  Yes, my station was what he watched at his home in Manteo.
GM - "Uh, we'll see about getting a copy and airing it later."
Andy - "I'll call the VP of Programming at NBC and be sure you get one."

About a week later, a tape showed up with that episode of Matlock.  On the head of the tape was Andy, in his Matlock blue suit, doing a promo about the special airing of Matlock that was coming on our station.

He seemed to be a nice guy.

What a great story, UFO Fill.  Thanks for sharing that.

TCM will be broadcasting A Face in the Crowd on July 18 as a tribute to Andy for anyone interested.

the great secret is that Mayberry is a real place. Floyd the Barber still cuts hair there and you can still get something good to eat down at the Snappy Lunch. As someone who has lived in NC for 13 years I have been sworn to secrecy

Ernest Borgnine - he was 95.

Ernest Borgnine - he was 95.

Bummer.  I was hoping he'd outlive Jan Michael Vincent.

Two favorites: Andy Griffith and Ernest Borgnine. I know they both lived long, full lives but it's still a little sad because they were pretty much iconic figures.

I grew up watching the Andy Griffith show. It was gentle, taught a lesson without moralizing and best of all, introduced me to bluegrass via the 'Darlings'. When I first saw 'A Face in the Crowd' my jaw dropped because Sheriff Andy was playing a baaaaad man, lol. But the thing I'll never forget was how my mother, who really wasn't a comedy fan, had a laughing fit from the scene in 'No Time for Sergeants' when Andy's character had all the toilets salute the general.

He was just great.

And Ernest Borgnine - I can't even begin to list the movies he's in that I loved: 'The Wild Bunch', 'The Poseidon Affair', 'The Vikings', 'Barabbas',  but the thing that impressed me the most was how unHollywood the man was, and how at 95 a whole new generation became fans of his because of Mermaid Man. That's pretty cool.

Great story, UFO Fill, I always read that Griffith was a nice guy. And,  Ben Shockley, 'Pray for the Wildcats' sounds very, very familiar. What's depressing is that I do remember Marjoe Gortner, lol.

Celeste Holm and Stephen Covey.  Wonder if dying is now one of his 7 habits? Yeah, tacky.

I liked Andy Griffith and Ernest Borgnine. Who didnt enjoy the Andy Griffith Show? It was a classic. my favorite Borgnine movie was Emperor of the North. He played an asshole train conductor who beats up hobos who try to ride his train. The movie is pretty dated, but its still really good.

I liked EB in The Dirty Dozen.  Well, I liked all the actors in The Dirty Dozen.

As a native Tar Heel, I will miss Andy G but TAGS will go on forever.  RIP Andy and Earnest, and thanks for letting us enjoy your immense talents.

Horseshack was gay? Never heard that rumor...

Then again, I never heard anything about him since I was in nursery school.

I'd say the tox will come back positive for elephant testosterone and HSH (human 'sploding hormone).

  Memo to St Peter:

Tony Scott is denied entry for a minimum of 12 lifetimes for participating in that dreadful remake of "The Taking of Pelham 123" with Vinnie Barbarino and Dr Chandler.
                                                                                           Regards, the HMFIC.

Rosie O'Donnell - near miss. Unfortunately.

Hammerheads - and sharks in general - stay alert.

American hero Neil Armstrong died. I'm sure that nutty Snoory will have some stupid tribute.
