Star Trek: The Next Generation (STTNG)

I always thought TNG felt a little too corporate or something.  It didn't quite have the raw drama and energy of the original.  Still I liked it anyway and I'd say in general the ones featuring Picard or Data were usually the best.  A few good ones that come to mind:

The three-parter with the Borg. (First part ends on a cliff-hanger, third part Picard goes back to Earth).
The one where Picard experiences another life on that dying planet.
The one where Spock's father Sarek loses control of his emotions.
The one where the crew devolves into their respective ancient ancestors.

However the high point of the series was Data's poem to his cat :)

The highlight of the series was Tasha Yar using Data as a lifesize dildo.

Jazmunda, you ruined star trek for me. I can't look at Data the same way anymore. Data as a Walking and Talking Dildo.  :o

That's one of my favorite bits from any Star Trek. I really hoped they'd develop that storyline. So many ways to go. Such lost potential. Oh well ... there's still the two-penis guy on reddit.

I feel so comfy around here -- like we're all wearing slippers or something.

I've watched all 178 episodes of TNG, some multiple times, but I have never noticed that.

I hope he stretched before performing those maneuvers otherwise he could have torn a hamstring.

I would pay good money for that porn. This is coming from a guy who has an unblemished record of never having paid for porn in his life.

Nah. People just like to say that because it was a little more dark and gritty...
And better written.  The long story arcs were a testament to the writer's faith in themselves and their fans.  The War with the Dominion...glorious.

...I haven't indulged in voyager or deep space nine yet.  I'm waiting for the right mood, then I will plow through each series in a couple weeks on netflix.
Take in DS9 from when Sisko shaves his head and dons the goatee.  The series catches fire from then on.  Get yourself a poster of Seven of Nine, that's all Voyager ever really had to offer.

Oh, there are definitely great episodes in TNG.  The series finale was incredible.  Voyager's finale was such a rip-off.  I'm still trying to get my money back on that one.

I also have seen every episode multiple times and I've never noticed this before. I might try this method of sitting down to see how it feels 8). it might not work for some chairs, and the testicles could be vulnerable to racking if one is not carefull. :o

Best TNG episode was The Inner Light.

Until yesterday, the only episode I saw in its entirety was the series debut.  Based on the comments about this episode (The Inner Light), I had a look last night.  If that's the best episode of the series then I didn't miss much.  I might look upon it differently if I was a regular viewer of the series, though.

i think so.  it helps to have some amount of investment in the characters.

From what little I know about the show, I would imagine that a fan would appreciate that Picard could have love and a family life including the joys of children and grandchildren; have friends and be invested as a co-equal member of a community.  In the end, he really had it both ways -- got the family and communal life and then back to his remote, elevated position as the ship captain.  Without that, the plot flaws were just too obvious and too distracting for me.

Surreal.

If you liked that, you'll love this:

Lawrence Tierney - One big Teddy bear ITA subs.avi

After filming wrapped, but before Reservoir Dogs was distributed, Quentin Tarantino said that one day after filming that Tierny went home, got roaring drunk, and unloaded a .357 Magnum in his apartment, some of the bullets passing through the walls into the next apartment where a family was sleeping.  Cops are called, he's thrown in jail, and the next day he was taken straight from his bail arraignment to the set.  With a rap sheet going back forty years, he's looking at five years in the can.  Tarantino said that if RD was a hit, Tierny could have a whole new career, but not if he's in prison.

Another Riker oddity which you probably have noticed is his tendency to lean downward in an angular way as he strides through the corridors.  It's just one of several known behaviors to watch out for during the TNG drinking game.

You guys are killing me.  Someone please back me up on DS9 here.
I agree with you. DS9 was somewhat interesting, but Sisko didn't do anything for me. I just didn't find him interesting. But I sure enjoyed the characters Odo, Quark, and Garak. I think I watched most of the DS9 episodes, but it wasn't "appointment TV" for me.

My favorite ST series is definitely The Next Generation. My least favorite was Enterprise.

Anyone here watch Babylon 5? I thought that was a great series.

I LOVED Babylon 5! That was "appointment TV" for me. Awesome story and fabulous characters - Garibaldi, Londo, Bester, G'Kar, Ivanova, etc.
Wish I had the DVDs and watch the whole thing again in just a weekend. :)

jazmunda

I love Garak.

My favorite quote of his was an interaction he had with Dr Bashir.

"Of all the stories you told me, which ones were true and which ones weren't?"
"My dear Doctor, they're all true."
"Even the lies?"
"Especially the lies."

Lt.Uhura

I think what made STTNG successful was the overall intelligent storylines, and the incredible Patrick Stewart.  As mentioned here, the Inner Light was also the most memorable episode for me, as well as the 3 part Borg story.   A few of the actors were really miscast IMHO.  Deanna's character was way too 'late 20th century' for me.  And Q, who I could never forget as Eugene on the soap opera Days of Our Lives.  No way Eugene had omnipotent powers--no.

John de Lancie was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Kent State University where he won a scholarship to Juilliard. John's father was a professional oboist with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. de Lancie is probably best known for his portrayal as Eugene Bradford on Days of Our Lives (1965) and the iconic, all-powerful Q on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987).
