Military Update

U.S. Military [USGS] Just Released This New Stunning Aerial Footage Of Hawaii Kilauea Volcano

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone
Vigorous eruption of lava continues from the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) fissure system in the area of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens.

Fissure 8 continues to maintain eruptive fountains reaching 200-250 feet. Subsidiary fountains in the vicinity of Fissure 8 are also active although with much less vigor, seldom exceeding 60 feet in height. This fountaining continues to feed a lava flow that is moving north out of Leilani Estates and then northeast along Highway 132 into the area of Noni Farms road. Flow front advance has slowed to less than 50 yards per hour.

Video of fissure 8 on Kīlauea Volcano's lower East Rift Zone on May 30, 2018. Fountain heights exceeded 200 feet and secondary fountains reached heights of 60 feet. The second video looks down Kupono Street, just south of Leilani Street, in the Leilani Estates subdivision, where chilled rock from the fissure 8 fountain have fallen.

(Public domain.)

By late afternoon, the front of the Fissure 18 flow was about 0.5 miles from Highway 137 and was spreading and slowing. In the late afternoon, a new flow lobe began branching from the south side of the fissure 18 flow approximately 1.5 miles upslope from the flow front. During the day, sporadic bursts of activity were also observed from Fissures 22, 6, and 13. Low level spattering and intermittent fountaining from Fissure 21 were also observed in the late afternoon and early evening.

Pele's hair and and other lightweight volcanic glass from high fountaining of Fissure 8 are falling to the west of the fissure and accumulating on the ground within Leilani Estates. Winds may waft lighter particles to greater distances. Residents are urged to minimize exposure to these volcanic particles, which can cause skin and eye irritation similar to volcanic ash.

This is a Civil Defense Message for Thursday, May 31 at 12 noon.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that vigorous lava eruptions continue from the lower east rift zone fissure system in the area of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens.

Due to the active volcanic eruptions, Mayor Kim has issued a mandatory evacuation order for Leilani Estates. The following policies are in effect:

Starting at 12:06 p.m. today, the mandatory evacuation order is in effect for all civilians in Leilani Estates, including and East of Pomaikai Street.
Everyone will have 24 hours from the effective date and time to evacuate the mandatory evacuation area.
Persons remaining in the mandatory evacuation area beyond the effective date and time of this Order do so at their own risk with the knowledge that emergency responders may not respond.
Persons in violation of this order are subject to arrest and will be liable for any costs associated with rescue operations in the mandatory evacuation area.

Refusing to evacuate may put you, your family and first responders in danger. Heed warnings from Civil Defense officials and stay alert.

We are on watch 24-hours a day for your safety.

This is your Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Agency.

Up All Night

Map of all destroyed homes in Puna / Leilani Estates as of June 1st (scroll down..)

Homes that have been damaged by cracks, SO2, and even properties totally surrounded by lava were not counted. Also, since this change in methodology relies on tax records many un-permitted homes, and Ohana (extended family) homes on the same parcel as a primary home, have been excluded.

Up All Night

To put the misery in Paradise of the 228 lost homes, so far, in perspective, the loss of homes (with no lives lost), while painful to each family member involved, is a drop in the bucket of the pain and loss of life to those homes and lives destroyed over the years in California fires, which have been 10 times worse, more than once...

In comparison, lava is only worse in permanent home destruction, as any burned out home in California could be re-built, but lava destroys homes and the land to build them on, etc.

Here a couple of highlights:

Oakland firestorm of 1991 destroyed 2,843 single-family homes, (and 437 multi-family units).

The Valley Fire of 2015 that started on September 12 in Lake County, California, destroyed 1,322 homes, (and 27 apartment buildings).

The Tubbs Fire of October 2017, was the most destructive wildfire in California history, burning parts of Napa, Sonoma, and Lake counties in Northern California, and affecting the city of Santa Rosa the most with more than 2,800 homes incinerated.

I think it says in the Fine Print that if your stay is cancelled at the La Reunion resort, then you will be comped for a stay at their other golf resort, in Hawaii...
