What do you listen to when you can't take C2C anymore?

Nothing
Mainstream talk radio
Progressive talk radio
Music
TV
Podcasts
Ian had an open line caller this weekend. I'll listen to Coast with headphones on next to my girlfriend in bed. She's usually sleeping. I almost lost it though. When she said to him that Jesus was in Australia and his name is Brian. Rather than having the typical GN response of "Ohh really, that's fantastic! Does it mean the apocalypse is coming soon." Ian was the persistent smart ass with this woman. Who I do believe was completely serious. I looked it up, and there is some guy in Australia claiming to be Jesus.

Yall are right though. It does seem like he's really lost interest in the show. I wonder if that isn't partially due to George. Sometimes I wonder what goes on behind the scenes at that Network. If GN get's a little ticked when people openly admit on the air that they prefer another host. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in their production room, or see some of their emails between each other.

John B. Wells sounds promising. Hes uber-conspiratorial, but hes from Texas. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I miss the days when Art would say to a guest "You have no idea what your talking about do you?" *click* "I'm sorry audience, thought we had a good one on, but this guy obviously had no clue what he was talking about. Were going to open lines, first caller!"

I suppose next we`ll get a similar announcement from G. Knapp.

At any rate, I hope Ian finds some relief from his condition. Tinnitus is nothing to joke about -- I had a brief and, thankfully, mild bout with it as a young man. I barely escaped with my sanity. Some swear I didn`t.

Glad you were able to overcome it. Sounds dreadful.

Rush is 100% stone deaf and has a cochlear implant.  I am anything but a Rush fan, but this is pretty amazing.  With a cochlear implant everyone sounds like a 1980’s B-movie robot or maybe a bad EVP.

Here is a demo.  Most people with cochlear implants hear something like the first 2 samples.  The original music is at the end.

http://www.hei.org/research/shannon/aip/ringdemo.mp3

Limbaugh had an autoimmune disease that killed the hair cells in the inner ear that enable hearing.

The second sample sounds a bit like Art Bell's demonic voice he would use on JC.

I listened to this show last night.  That caller was hillarious and completely insane.  It was obvious she has some kind of mental problems by the way she talked and her near inability to process any of Ian's questions.

Her call was funny because it came during the Open Lines portion of the show where I consider those types of calls fair game.  What really pisses me off is when they go to callers during really good interviews such as earlier in that same program.  Ian and his guest had some cool discussion going on about things like GPS tracking and internet privacy.  Instead of continuing with any number of great questions they head to callers during the last 30 or 40 minutes of the interview.  What a fucking waste of time and it brought the interview to a grinding halt.  Stupid people calling swearing they're being psychically tracked.  Leave it to CTC callers to take a real life topic with real evidence and turn it into some pseudo science bullshit.

Callers almost never have anything constructive to add and I wish Ian was not required to take calls.  I'm guessing he must be required.  He clearly has little patience for this type of crap and it happens just about every time.  Really, it's probably my fault for wanting CTC to be something it's not and never has been.

I don't think so. George Knapp had Jacques Vallee and another UFO researcher on a Sunday night show a while back and didn't take calls. I sent him an email thanking him for not doing so, and his reply (something like, "I didn't want to listen to stories about Aunt Martha's UFO sighting 40 years ago") told me it was deliberate, and that George Knapp 'gets it'.

I couldn't agree with you more. What little remains that's fun and interesting of C2C that Noory hasn't destroyed is being ruined by the moronic narcissism of almost all of the callers.

I blame myself for not getting into Andy Hines, on consumerism, and Micheal Gazzaniga, on the brain, and free will, and such.  I just wasn't in the mood for heavy stuff.  I wonder if Ian is able to enjoy the shows that he's doing, with the ringing, and the headaches.  Even though he doesn't want to talk about it, I think he should do a segment on tinnitus.  He seems to really dig the twitter.  While George gives shout-outs to his friendly forums, Ian is shouting out to his twitter fans.  I don't care for this twitter, but I really don't know anything about it.  I can't get over the name.  It sounds silly.  Follow who?  Where?

Not that I really care, but tinnitus could be a secondary, or tertiary reason for his departure.  When one decides to remove oneself from a public position you have to select a palatable reason to do so to avoid judgementalism.  What if he were simply sick of conversing with lunatics?  That is a little harder to explain than a medical condition.

I must say, that crack last night about "Father of experimental carpentry" was a beaut. I'll miss Preacher Punnett just for that.

Don't know about this.  Seems as if he'd have a perfectly legitimate reason to quit Coast altogether because of his day job and deacon duties: "Overworked, overscheduled, out of here completely."

I think the tinnitus thing is a real problem for him.  He's mentioned it from time to time in the past.  And the fact that he's keeping one Sunday night a month tells me (my opinion, at any rate) that he wants to keep a toe-hold at Coast.  Why not just separate himself outright if he wanted to be gone?

He hasn't said a word about what might happen Coast-wise if the aggressive treatment manages to get him back to a healthy state.  Knowing Ian's typical approach to health things, I think he likely doesn't want to look beyond the work he has to do on the problem to speculate.  But my guess is that one Sunday night a month is the umbilical cord he's not cutting so that he can come back IF he gets himself straightened out.

I like this alot. I also think that Ian ENJOYS hosting Coast to Coast AM. It's almost not a job for him, until troll-ish callers come on the lines. Even then, he handles it well. I used to dog Ian for being so serious and acting like he was hosting 60 minutes. I used to think, "It's Coast to Coast AM. Let the kooks kook on and on. Stop kook-blocking!" Now I understand Ian and his personality better. He's just not a clown who will do anything for a buck, unlike George Noory, who is selling pyramid scheme dreams to those kooks during a recession. Good on Ian!

I'm also sad that Ian's leaving or appearing less.  NPR *wishes* that it could have someone this smart.  Ian's so good that I can't believe that it's commercial radio.  I can't blame the guy for wanting more days off a week.  I'm no Christian, but if Pastor Punnett was on Jesus radio, I'd listen to that as well.

And now we're going to be hearing more stupidity from John B. Wells, who makes me want to smash my radio in (more on that in another thread).

Ian to Wells is not an upward trajectory. Wells is just a deep voiced DJ without music. Ian is a nerd, but Wells is an oaf, and give me a nerd over an oaf every day of the week.

Longtime frequent caller Will from Madison,Wisconsin made it on with Ian and his guest tonight in the third hour.
Will called in with Noory just a couple nights ago too.
He again got into his idea of ancient Finish connections and starts talking with strange sounds to demonstrate the language.
Ian recognized him right away from his many calls over the years and knew he can get rambling and way off the target, so warned him of that.  :P

Jessie Richards (who at first I thought was a guy, then I thought was a woman, then I went back to thinking was a guy...not that it matters, of course) on how the world is really in good shape.  David Elkington on the Codices again.  He got a little touchy when Ian asked him to elaborate on some personal attacks being directed against him in cyberspace.   Somebody called in predicting that King Leo will return to earth.  Great.  What does he want?  Thank you, Morgus, for catching the name of that guy who sounds like Ross Perot on quaaludes.  Will.  I get a kick out of him sometimes.  Ian mention a nerologist has fixed his headache problem.  That is good news.

Just a thought...say Ian improves? Oh well., he signed away his night? No way he can mount a coup to take it back, I'd imagine..

And he followed that up by saying something like, "Too bad for John B. Wells. I'm staying! [pause] No, just kidding."

My heart leaped, then sank.

No fair, Ian.

Ian could always get back his early Saturday spot that he did a few years back when Art returned for awhile and took Ian's weekend latenight spot until Art quit again.

Curious how the contract period will work

CoastCanuck

in the last hour of the most recent Ian show when he was taking open lines... just before the bottom of the hour... it sounded like he was pimping a children's book for that last minute Christmas gift.... am I correct about this?  Is this a book he wrote?

I didn't hear it, but I'd guess it's the follow-up to his 'dizzy the mutt with the propeller butt', a title that will haunt me forever.

...either that, or he might have been talking about the bible?

'coast to coast live', well worth a listen. topics like 'leprosy colony', 'lost knowledge', 'aliens and rock n roll', 'disneyland engineering'... all good Coast topics, but heres the twist:
these topics are handled competently by a professional radio host who reads the guest's books, engages with the subject and asks intelligent questions!

strange how it never caught on.

Ok, I gave it another listen.  He said words to the effect of 'don't forget my book Jacula the Vampire Dog, a handy great last second gift for the right kid'.  Then, confused about where he was in the show, he said Deus before he caught his mistake.
(he always ends his show with Deus Te Amat but he was still half an hour away from the end).
So my point is Ian is promoting his book, as George Noory is promoting his book, Worker in the Light,  and John B. Welles was promoting his website Caravan to Midnight.  I've seen negative comments about George and John, are there equal feelings about Ian promoting his book and also about making a mistake?

Ian has promoted his books for over a year, nothing new there.
Lately he has been really pushing his personal twitter feed.
Have to give Ian some slack though since he has suffered so many physical problems this past year including his foot injury (almost had to have amputation), severe headaches, plus now tinnitus and loss of hearing.
He has managed to stay in good spirits and kept on hosting Saturday nights thru all that.

Glad to hear at least Ian reported last night he got some good news regarding his headaches, his doctor was able to ease his pain with muscle relaxants.

That's a big part of why Ian's hawking his kids' books doesn't bother me.

But let's add a look at the products.

Wells is hawking fear porn for profit.  Noory is hawking fear porn for profit.  Ian is hawking cute kids' books that even if some/all of the money weren't going to charity would still be a positive contribution to the world.

Where would you rather see your money go?  To a children's author?  Or to a scam artist promoting some worthless concoction that allegedly only Ronald Reagan could once get which now available to the public, only through George Snoory's commercials?

And let's not forget that after Reagan used the power of the presidency to obtain this miraculous potion, he contracted Alzheimer's and died. Seems an odd selling point.
