Addendum to the above post. Where did the prosperity of the climbing GDP go? Inflation sure is rough, if you are working class. Not so rough for corporations & executives.

We all to often have socialism for the rich and rugged free enterprise capitalism for the poor.

I'm just trying to remember what else happened in the early 70's that might have contributed to your graph... Ah, the dollar was decoupled from gold in late '71. That was good of them to remove any restraints on the banksters and others who knew how to game the system.

I had to look up the Nixon quote. It is kind of laughable in today's economy...

"If you want to buy a foreign car or take a trip abroad, market conditions may cause your dollar to buy slightly less. But if you are among the overwhelming majority of Americans who buy American-made products in America, your dollar will be worth just as much tomorrow as it is today.

The effect of this action, in other words, will be to stabilize the dollar."

Some might call it stability. Others might use the term inflationary... It's good to know that I can still buy a decent house for $25,000 like I could in '73. Hell of a job they did making sure that my dollar will buy just as it did yesterday. (Yes, I realize that there was inflation prior to the early '70s as well. But it's funny how the line seems to take off around the same time as your chart shows a marked change.)

Taxation through inflation is a very real thing (it's funny that people think that they are only taxed at the rate that the government physically takes their cash when income taxes are due...)
  ...

I don't disagree with what you've stated. Which is part of a much larger discussion, that could be parsed ad infinitum. While I agree with you, the chart above shows more than just inflation due to fiat money.

If a person only sees inflation in the chart, that is their prerogative. As noted on the chart above, it is using the Implicit GDP Deflator, using 2009 dollars. Therefor the chart above is adjusting for inflation. So inflation isn't the whole story in this case.

View the adjusted for inflation trend over almost 50 years. Where Gross Domestic Product rises, and Median Income is basically stagnate. This trend crosses both political parties in the Executive and Legislative branches, during almost half a century. No matter which political party is in power. It's like flipping a gold coin. Doesn't matter if it lands on head or tails. If its someone else's gold coin. Simply put, no matter who you've voted for in the last 50 years, we the masses get the same stale economic outcome. Coincidence? Meanwhile the GDP prospers. Where does this prosperity go?

What is to blame for this economic situation? Feminism, which bathroom Trannys use, gun rights, Globalism, Liberal or Conservative Ideologies? This is a thinker. I personally blame the lizard people, and the interdimensional demons. I hear buying overpriced vitamins, and water filters is the solution to this economic plight, and the Rona virus.

Okay, let’s try this again.

A.  All that you say is true under normal circumstances and I have no problem with that.  I’ve been to B school and spent 20 years in the private sector post Navy and I really do understand Keynesian economics, you know, the supply and demand curve and all that.

B.  Trump declared a national emergency on March 17.   Laws against profiteering, hoarding, etc. have been in effect since that date.  Trump has now reluctantly invoked the Defense Production Security Act mainly because of 3-Ms behavior.  He was rightfully reluctant because while it strengthens the federal government’s hand in enforcing necessary measures to secure and manage the supply of essential/strategic commodities during a national emergency it has obvious drawbacks via-a-vis laissez-faire economics.  It should not remain in force a second longer than the emergency demands.

C.  Once again, it stopped being okay for business as usual when the national emergency was declared and it has nothing to do with who the material is being sold to.

So... did they actually break the law? Not just your or that of an overpaid talking heads opinion of said law being broken. Once again, no charges, or proof offered of profiteering, hoarding, etc., just a weak appeal from authority. Okay, thatz not proof, no matter how many times you type it. Keep carrying the water, lest ye be judged a communist, comrade.

Now, if they actually did break any laws, hang 'em high. I'm not married to any businesses, governments, monetary systems, they ain't even a booty call.

There was a time that it worked (better). You had Henry Ford deciding to pay his workers enough that they could afford the products they were making.    ...

So, what is your solution to this? Ban capitalism? Tax the fuckers until they are bankrupt or move even more off shore? Follow Trumps lead trying to force industry back to America? Nationalize all of the big companies?

Who said anything about banning or taxing anything? Slow down just a little. First, people have to understand the problem, before they can even begin to identify solutions. Otherwise people will continue to carry water for their team of choice, vacillating as their emotions dictate. Offering solutions to those unable or unwilling to see or understand, is simply tilting at windmills. I'm no oracle, just a messenger.

Shit, I don't even have a brandâ,,¢, much less merchandise to offer as solutions. Therefore, a bad capitalist. Therefore, commie commie commie! I enjoy observing the peanut gallery too.

I see capitalism in action, like every day. Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing will sell products to anyone who wants to purchase their products. Nationality doesn't matter, only green matters, like any company in the free market. What does a national emergency have to do with free trade during a pandemic in this case?

You've only shown a narrative of a company selling a product to a private buyer that you don't approve of, at an undisclosed price that you also don't like.

Therefore you've decreed it as profiteering, without any other proof. The burden of proof is on you. What is it that you don't understand about your belief not being proof of anything, much less profiteering?

Where is the line drawn between what the market will bear, verses profiteering? Where is your proof? How you feel at any given moment, is not a valid answer under capitalism, sorry.

Capitalism and the free market doesn't care how anyone feels. Companies only care about increased quarterly profits for its shareholders. Capitalist who don't seem to know how capitalism works. I won't wait.

How is it that the funeral industry suddenly is so overwhelmed that people are left to rot in hallways? Either this is far deader than they are telling us, or they are manufacturing a headline. (Or they have legislated funeral homes to close as "non-essential" and the bodies are literally piling up by the tens of thousands from all causes...)

*I'm getting ready for MV to rename this thread "the general musings of WOTR..."

My post was basically stating the stats are incomplete due to lack of time and number of test kits, and one incomplete early data set isn't any better than another incomplete data set. Even with hindsight and complete data, there are situations where there are no good answers.

What percentage of the population will suffer permanent damage to their health, or die in a year? Which will damage the economy the least, soft quarantine or business as usual? This is unknown, and asking for a years worth of data today, in a 4 month old situation.

The stock market was already poised to crash even without the virus, due to Saudi & Russia getting into an energy price war, causing the bottom to fall out of the energy markets worldwide. The Fed pumped $320 billion into the repo markets before Corona was known, trying to keep the market liquid. Corona merely expedited & compounded an already bad situation. Currently whichever way the government decides to go they are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

The USA has for profit healthcare industry, unlike Canada. In 2018 $3.65 trillion USD,($1.42CAD = $1USD), or $11,172USD ($15,640CAD) per person was spent on health care. The U.S. healthcare industry is around 18% of the economy. That 18% is larger than the total GDP of Canada.

If the USA takes the business as usual approach to the virus, and hospitals get overwhelmed, like has been reported elsewhere. Causing hospitals to break down even for a few weeks. Not only will it have an impact on the economy, but more importantly it will disrupt an essential service. A service just as important to our thinly veiled civil society as water, food, electricity. Causing many deaths not related to SARS-2 in the process. This scenario harms 18% of an already fucked economy, and more importantly disrupts an essential public service for an unknown amount of time. When people are desperate is when they are most prone to, and accepting of extreme ideologies (communism, capitalism, fascism.)

This soft quarantine will only slow the spread of the virus not stop it. In the process disrupting large swaths of the working class economy also. This isn't just Boomer Flu. Early data shows that around 33% of the sick/dead in hospitals with COVID-19 are 45 and under. Again, no matter what the government does they are damned.

Yet the government has already taken care of those who they really work for, the money is speech Donor Class. Handing out trillions of USD, without enough strings attached, for the wealthiest 1000 people/corporations (CEO bonus tiem). In what is only the first round, of what will eclipse 2008 bailouts. That ain't Capitalism, Bellgabbers. Have we ever lived in a capitalistic society? We all too often have socialism for the rich and rugged free market capitalism for the poor.

The spirit animal of Neo-Capitalism is obviously a shark, if it stops moving it dies. Why is such a glorious economic system so fragile? Who would've known a system that abhors abundance, in favor of scarcity for extracting profits from the masses was flawed? Hummm...

https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html

Risking sounding snide/sarcastic to those who are reacting to beliefs and emotions. Over a situation with limited information of a rapidly unfolding global event. Where hours can make a difference. Which the world might be faking, to make some politicians look bad. By daring to put those politicians on TV, during a public address, here goes.

Considering this virus strain is a little over 100 days old, and you're asking for a years worth of complete data to be useful... Exactly how would this imaginary complete 100 day data set help hospitals, who are being crippled by the influx of sick dying people today? No matter which side of the decimal point the mortality rate ultimately falls, a year from now. Unless this is all fake news...

Without a years worth of data. We've seen how this virus burns through other populations, who are around two weeks ahead of us on the contagion curve. At the moment isolation it's the ONLY tool we have to slow down infection rates, so hospitals can keep mortality rates low overall, not only for people with Covid-19.

Lacking immunity, treatment, inoculation, or a cure. Isolation is the only real tool we have, and is the most successful strategy to slow or stop contagion. This has been true for thousands of years. Despite any statistics compiled after the fact. New unknown highly contagious virus that swamps hospitals bad for all.

Luckily we live in a time when we are able to get a lot of information in the first 100+ days into this outbreak. Had this virus outbreak been 40 years ago, we'd probably still be thinking it is a new highly contagious treatment resistant strain of flu at 100+ days into this shit show.

Sometimes there are no good answers. Any move you make you lose hard. The only way you could know the best outcome for any action for a fact, would be if you had a machine that travels through time, and alternate dimensions to see all possible outcomes. Then choose the least brutal fucking. But if you had such a machine you could make a far more safe perfect world for all.

About the other point of when, where, to quarantine using early data sets. If anyone here truly desires to become an amateur actuary & epidemiologist. Might I suggest you start by understanding the exponential function. To imperfectly model answers for yourselves.

The USA already has the best actuaries & epidemiologist capitalism can buy. All of them crunching numbers for many decades. Over scenarios just like what is unfolding today. All of whom are sorting out the risk management of harm to the populace verses economic damage, et. al.

Yes! Right. What could be the answers? Such notions could lead to some interesting thoughts & discussions, if it were allowed, maybe not. I'm not the font of all righteous knowledge & oracle of secret knowledge. Nor do I want to be, unlike others.

With that said, how could a discussion happen on this forum? When your opinion, can be the only right opinion allowed. With knee-jerk repeated one-liner strawmaning, and name calling, for daring to have a "wrong idea/opinion". Then you stalk members into different threads/topics, so you can name call, & shit post, until the topic/thread at hand is almost unreadable. Some members don't care about your personal issues with other members, over a different thread/topic. Hard to believe I know.

Additionally you've proven time and again the last thing you want is genuine discourse. Your opinions seem to be based upon a narrow grasp of the title from the last youtube video you've posted. Even when it contradicts, the previous video you posted 10 minutes earlier. Painful to see such vapid needy point scoring, even when others are winding you up for sport. However, I'm sure you'll be able to ad-hominem, strawman, & google up youtube videos with the proper solutions and opinions, to dunk on me.

And you think this will change with communism...like it has in China where everyone is equally rich, healthy and happy?! :D

Where have I ever said that? That narrative lives only in your mind. You seem to be missing my point.

I'll spell it out for those hard of thinking for themselves. We've never known a time in history, much less our lifetimes where the masses lives weren't controlled by the "elites". In other words the 1% has always dictated how the 99% lives. Look at history. There has always been a hierarchy where the few had powerful luxurious lifestyles at the expense of the masses. Assuming you use the numbers to tell the narrative, instead of believing the leaders of your choice. Why would I believe that we live any differently today than in the past, when looking at wealth distribution numbers? #TheCakeIsALie,AndIt'sDelicious,Comrades.

No matter what -ism or -ist system you believe in, or think you live under there are always "lizard people" otherwise known as sociopaths. Seeking to control and corrupt said system for their benefit, and the "sheepeople" will fall in line for one leader or another. Effectively putting the lunatics in charge of the asylum. How do we know who the "lizard people" are? ProTip: Mostly they are the ones in power, or seeking to have power. #WakeUp,Comrades!

Meanwhile you also seem to believe in the narrative where the USA is a Democratic Republic, with a Capitalist Economy, and China is living under a Communist government. If you buy into that bullshit, I've got some Macs, water filters, potions, lotions & snake oil for sell. All made to get and keep you woke! The pyramid above shows that in 2013 (Rounded off):

Half (50%) of the world's net wealth belongs to the top 1%.
The top 10% of adults hold (85%) of the worlds wealth.
While the bottom 90% hold the remaining (15%) of the world's total wealth.

Put another way...
The top 30% of adults hold (97%) of the total wealth.
Leaving the bottom 70% with the remaining (3%) of wealth.
