I have to admit, I admire Vladimir Putin

Dick Cheney is a bad guy, but he is a boss. Within the Republican party, no one steps up to him, even with his having an ultra-butch, gay daughter. He should technically be in jail, but he isn't and he wrote a book boasting about it. While I don't agree with his neo-conservative foreign policy, I wish he could have focused those talents on tackling domestic problem (except for hunting).

Ironically, the leader we had who ran the KGB's counterpart was viewed as a "wimp".

Pappy was a brutal mo-fo who never forgot a slight. Actually, I doubt he's cooled his jets much, even now. It's interesting how he made himself out to be an outsider to intelligence machinations when he ran for president, but he was doing all kinds of crazy shit under Reagan. He and his Texas good ol' boys killed Saleem Bin Laden, incidentally, on top of Iran-Contra and other collusions (Carlyle and Cerebus) too numerous to count.

Yup, and that's why I wrote "viewed" as wimp, because the reality was far different than perception. You didn't get to run the CIA in that era by merely being a technocrat...

Yes, I understood. I'm afraid I don't get the need for PR fakery or why it's supposed to be a useful thing. Obviously, politicians are nothing what they claim to be - why should we give them the benefit of the doubt? I'm afraid I don't understand The General's objections - but, then again, I'm just a stupid musician.

I know from credible sources that Obama is really bi-sexual, and that he had sex with Rahm Emanuel.
Rahm is of course a homosexual ballet dancer, a beautiful man. It is seen as a gift to have sex with him in Americas homoerotic leadership.

Against my better judgement, can I ask what sources?

Putin's been getting boo'ed a lot lately
Not due to what we are discussing here. He's nobody's fool, and he knew America was spiraling when he was in office because of its stupid decisions, which are continuing under Obama. From what I understand, Russians fear his return because he's a power hog and it limits the ability for a new faces to participate in politics. Eh. Whatever. Bill Clinton must be envious. He has expressed many times his desire to be president again, that we should change the law limiting an ex-president because (and I think this was his logic) he may have experience that is useful.... i.e. history repeats itself.

...cos he controls the gas I heat my home with!
I hear he's a really great guy.

well, Obama is a globalist sellout and servant to bankers who made and funded him, also there's evidence he's a CIA tool like his mum. Putin on the other hand is a Patriot who kicked out the globalists who had taken over Russia after the fall of communism.

Sure Russia still has some areas to improve, but Clinton calling the elections "unfair, possibly fraudulent" is just a joke - coming from the USA, where 2 parties run the show who are both full of globalist sellouts, basically the US is a 1 party with 2 faces country.

I guess Obama has so much dirt and a shady past that he is indeed blackmailable. A shady birthcert, CIA past, gay, coke, and bucking down to royals. Gimme a break. :)
He can read nicely from a teleprompter, but Reagan was better freestyle, and Reagan had guts and charisma - probably that's why Bush Sr. arranged for his death (which failed).

sounds like sour grapes to me.  vlad is a sore loser
vlad's party has the most support in parliament. he's gonna be the next leader. what's worse is we are probably stuck with obama since the republican party can't get it together.

I know Putin wants to look young and virile, but he face injections need to stop. That pic of him next to Hillary must be from at least a decade ago.

Wait so was Obama the bottom or the top? I see him as more of a top, but you never know.

Ah the fine line between first amendment rights and Libel.

What did Bill do?  He was lucky to be president in those go-go dotcom years, and we weren't involved in war.  Not sure what he's exhibited that would be useful now (I will give you that GW and Obama are both terrible, and Bill or his wife would be better).

China is another powerful country that looks out for their own interests.  We here in the US need to get back to that.

I usually cause trouble because I question people and their ability to speak.  Who is this "Fries girl"? I listen to past broadcasts of CGab, and after hearing her once, I nearly went nuts hearing her saying "I don't know, I dunno, I don't know, yeah, no, well I donno, I donno". She sounds like she could be a very intelligent caller, but the "I don't knows" need to go.

Sounds like most listeners and callers of Michael's program are people who have brains. I ask you all: what is it with this stupid word "actually"?  It seems like every time people use a verb, they have to modify it with "actually". I don't get it.

Now, most of you who follow Michael are probably conservatives; next time you are called "Teabaggers", call them "garbagebaggers". Garbage in , garbage out, these people  believe the liberal media.

Just some thoughts...

A country can only succeed if it is moral. China has failure coming.

Hmm. Sounds like he's having a much better time than you are. Guess the booty-raids aren't working out so well.

Putin urges revival of Soviet era fitness tests

We used to have something similar here, I remember it from grade school in the 80's.  It was called the Presidential Fitness Challenge or something.  I had to do 3 pull ups, I couldn't even do one.  It was mandatory, and there were clear winners and losers.  If you could complete the fitness test, you got a little medal and a ribbon.  Do we still do this in schools?  We should if we don't.  This makes much more sense than passing laws about how big your soda can be.

Vlad The Impaler, true to his training, is a classic deep mole. His coming to power (and staying long after he supposedly stepped down, as required by law - I know, I chuckled too) was merely a foreshadowing of another world leader who has spent a lifetime inventing and perfecting a "legend"by which he portrays himself as something entirely different from the real man. Vlad seemed like a charming rascal, almost jokey in his egotistical need to have his uber-maleness captured on film. It makes for wonderful viewing on those weekends at his dacha in the Soviet version of Fire Island. But he was just playin' so that the stupid journalists of the West would give him all the time and good press he needed. And they did.

But make no mistake: Vlad Putin, head of the KGB, spymaster, narcissist - is a killer. And not merely a killer, he is Stalin redivivus. He wants nothing more, and nothing less, than a return of Soviet Russia, complete with its unwilling empire intact. And with him playing the part of Good Old Uncle Joe. He doesn't have the coattails of an V.I Ulyanov to ride, but then he has magically amassed a personal fortune of $40 Billion. That's Billion with a B, and that's dollars. Plus he has a few Russian oil and mafia (same thing) billionaires by the nads too, so he can count on their even more unbelievable wealth being at his disposal.

Vlad can openly come to power at any time he chooses. And when he does, it will already be too late, because the N.U.S.S.R (New Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) will be a done deal. And won't that be fun? I guess then we'll see what "real" communism looks like, and see what heaven on earth looks like.

The rise of  Putin and the hard-liners was preceeded by the the expansion of NATO eastward after the collapse of the USSR and Yugoslavia.  It is primarily a military alliance set up after WWII to contain Germany and the Soviets, and to further isolate Yugoslavia.  The USSR set up the Warsaw Pact (the USSR and the 6 central European countries they controlled) as a counter-balance to that.

After the fall of the USSSR - and the dissolvment of the Warsaw Pact - people like Gorbachev, then Boris Yeltsin were looking westward and to be on friendly terms with the US and the West - as trading partners, to modernize their economies and societies, possibly a nice counter-balance to China which would have benefited them and us.

So what did we do?  Instead offering friendship and possibly sun-seting at least the military portion of NATO, we focused on expanding NATO eastward into former Warsaw Pact countries right up to the border of Russia - in 1999  (Czech Rep, Hungary and Poland), in 2004 7 more members which had either been Warsaw Pact members or part of Yugoslavia were added, and in 2009 added 2 more members.

Not only was the West's military alliance marching toward Moscow, but at the same time the West was also meddling in various elections - Georgia's Rose Revolution in 2003 and Ukraine's Orange Revolution in 2004.  We can blame people like Bill Clinton, Madeline Albright, George W Bush and his team, the pin-stripe boys and girls at State, the Chickenhawks at Defense, and the Neo-Cons for this incredible series of blunders.

There are A LOT of ethnic Russians still living in the former USSR republics.  How the newly free republics of Georgia, Lithuania, Ukrain, etc treat these people is very important to the Russians living in Russia.  They look at those places the way the US looks at Latin America (Monroe Doctrine), the way France and the UK look at their former colonies - except these places are right next to Russia and not hours away by air.

We are largely responsible that the hard liners are entrenched in Russia and that their economy is run by mobsters and ex-KGB.  Of course Putin takes pleasure in helping Iran go nuclear and assisting Assad hang on in Syria.  It's fun to stir up trouble and poke the idiot West in the eye, the same way we enjoyed watching the Soviets getting bogged down in Afgahistan in the '80s.  It would have been difficult enough for them to  modernize and Westernize without our interference.  They logically perceive our actions as a threat

Pragmier

Good observations P*B.

Since we're talking of strong men and Yugoslavia was mentioned, I happened upon this quote ascribed to Tito addressing Stalin:

Quote"Stop sending people to kill me. We've already captured five of them ... If you don't stop sending killers, I'll send one to Moscow, and I won't have to send a second."

Balls! Wikipedia sources it to The Unknown Stalin by Medvedev, can't vouch as I haven't read the book.

BigDave

To hell with that Joseph Stalin wannabe!

Yorkshire pud

Tito was genuinely loved by most of the Yugo people. His passing of course was the catalyst for the terrible Balkans conflict.
