... so I rolled back to Win7.  Have fun with your new OS MicrosNoory.

Win7 was fine, I'm still using it.  Win XP was fine too.  Hell I'd still be using friggin Win 2000 if I could.

Microsoft's motto is "if it's not broken, break it."  You have to keep the army busy.

i think win10 is great.  there are a couple of things (UI and privacy settings) you'll want to tweak upon installation, but it's much faster than win7 and feels a lot snappier than any linux distro i've run.

I just wish they'd stop changing the damn interface around.  Just pick one already.  And leave stuff like the friggin control panel and file manager alone dagummit.

My Win7 install has errors with some of the hotfixes, so the update manager hangs. Even after scanning and repairing with all the MS tools. Four years of crud on the hard drive to back up, then install and do all those updates and upgrade to Win10, on my slow 3G internet. Can't do it. Staying on Linux until some far future when broadband comes to rural America.

I had that same problem and I finally just gave up.  I think it's part of the conspiracy to frustrate us into upgrading.

And I'm pretty sure upgrading to 10 is mandatory now, is it not? I'm hearing a lot of stories about people who have automatic updates enabled discovering 10 is installed.

That's something that can only happen to people with high-speed broadband. Here it would likely tie up my internet all day and all night. Then time out at 99% when I check my email.

Don't want to upgrade to 10 ?  Sick of the constant nag screens ?  Never Fear !

Use it if you like it Zeebo, just turn off all updates, make sure you have a decent AV (oldapps.com), and turn off JS. Perfect for a NET cruiser and doing paperwork(openOffice / LibreOffice / Office 2003.)  ;)

Try this and re-evaluate. https://sourceforge.net/projects/antix-linux/files/Final/MX-14/MX-14.iso/download?use_mirror=ufpr
Note: add ", load=all" to the boot options so it sees the cd you burn the .iso to or the usb you're loading from. I used the PAE version so it would fit on a cd instead of a DVD. (Put it on a client's ancient equipment that had no usb support or DVD player.)

Let me mention, this is the fastest installer I've ever used. Takes about 10-15 minutes on low RAM equipment. Worth checking out. ;)

I'm posting this on an MX-14 system and actually like it as much - maybe better than Xubuntu 14. :o  I have to get into the forums and check for multiple monitor setup though. Out of the box, it just mirrors.

6-8 months before any M$ new OS rollout, EXPECT updates to start messing w/ system functionality. This is a known business practice w/ M$. I learned this w/ 2000. A year before M$ had EOL on XP, I turned off ALL updates. That machine still runs well. (I keep it for running VS2010.)

Dr. Evil at Microsoft keeps nagging me so much to do Windows 10, it can't be good.  It's worse than a mother-in-law.

This surprises me not.  I still have XP running fine on this very laptop - I stopped updates on it long ago thankfully.  Mostly I just use it for web-surfin & ancient pc games.  I still love XP's file manager the best - no stupid library/dvd menus and still has the classic up arrow for directory nav!

Don't upgrade windows. Never. Do a clean install instead. And spend the $40 to buy a new drive first.

It appears that I first have to do an upgrade of my Win7 OEM install to Win10 - which will turn my Win7 key into a working Win10 license. It looks like the only way to get it. So I'll have to do an upgrade and then wipe the drive and do a clean install.

Would definitely like to get a new drive to put it on as well, rather than this old drive I'm using.

Instead of wiping out a perfectly good Win7 partition install, can't you just make a couple primary partitions on the hard drive (or SSD) with Win7 in one partition and install Win10 to the second partition? There are free hard disk partition utilities and boot managers that can select which partition to boot from on system boot too.
Then you can switch between them until sure you want to stick with Win10 or until you gradually get all apps installed for Win10.

I did this back when I first wanted to try Win7 while using WinXP years ago, actually had 3 primary boot partitions:
1) DOS/GRUB utilities
2) WinXP
3) Win7
I also have a fourth partition just for data.
I could boot into WinXP to play old games, etc while using Win7 for normal stuff.

Now I don't have the WinXP partition anymore since I upgraded to a SSD drive, so I could use the 3rd partition for making a Win10 partition at some point but still have Win7 available since I've heard Win10 has some compatibility issues with some old apps/games and drivers for older devices?

IMHO, XP was the best OS M$ put out. 2000 comes in a close second only because it doesn't handle NTFS. XP can be locked down tighter than a Nuns' cooter if you want it to be. Plus software up to 2011-12 can be run on it. When I need to rip out a quick app in VS, it's the machine I use. (VS2010 Ultimate runs just fine on it.)

Do a full backup on the system w/ either ReDo or Drive Image XML  DIXML allows you to browse the Bkp files without decompressing or reinstalling the system. I've used them both, and like them both. (I should probably drop this in the freeware thread, but it's here now :o  ;) )

To call in and say you're a developer that needs to activate XP for backwards compatibility testing is even becoming a hassle now. Keep your own activated copies to be safe. ;)

Here's an update.  Windows 10 seems to have a well-known, or at least well complained of, "feature" that installs a video driver.  That makes the machine think it has two monitors and it sends video to this second, phantom, monitor.  Hooking up a second monitor brought up the desktop.  None of the online fixes worked, so I rolled back to Win7.  Have fun with your new OS MicrosNoory.
LOL - It's not a bug, it's an undocumented feature. ;D ;D ;D
BTW - MicrosNoory - Excellent !

Cheer up. ;) We have cookies on the dark side.  ;D

Need a laugh ?

Whatever works for you. ;) I'm a big Linux pundit mainly because the OS's save me time - until I get mod happy and end up in dependency hell  :o - but that's of my own doing. If it works for you and you like it, go for it. :)

That's a good option. My Win7 install is working fine. I actually don't use it for anything but gaming. I know pretty much nothing about Win10, and I'm not looking forward to upgrading. I'm just afraid Win10 is going to be a forced upgrade at some point.

That makes it easy, and I don't mind the MS watermark while I test drive Win10. Nice.

Last drop for a bit.
MicrosNoory isn't the only one w/ problems.
Check out this audio of a very (un)satisfied apple customer. It's been making the rounds on the web for a while, but still funny as shit if you never heard it before. http://www.jimbosworld.org/sections/jadedtheatre/Upset_Apple_Customer.mp3

If this does a registry mod like I think it does, you shouldn't have to worry. I'm pretty good inside the registry myself, just make sure to turn off the updates, all of them, like MV stated, or else M$ may try to push another registry hack on you and you'll have to go through the process again. ;)
