VirusTotal is a free service that analyses suspicious files and URLs and facilitates the quick detection of viruses, worms, trojans, and all kinds of malware.

This is a MUST USE SERVICE if you download things off of the internet but it still won't help for "key logging viruses". Still I use it for everything.

Sounds like Tor is still pretty good as long as you don't have this kind of side-leakage.  Of course, unless your up on all the latest third-party protocols etc. you might get tracked anyway.  As I remember that earlier story was from Microsoft error messages being sent out, which id'd your ip.

Sounds like the only true anonymity is to fly to a foreign country on a fake passport, put on a good disguise, find a web cafe far from any street cameras, ... then use Tor.   ;D

I think today TOR is only as good as the operating system it is being run on.

Is 'sketchy' the modern euphimism for publishing videos and photos of children being raped; trading in military spec weapons and class A narchotics, and a means for those who wouldn't think twice about beheading you and your family for fun to keep in touch?

I'm not defending snooping per se, but some of those who really need desposing of with prejudice should be snooped on. Unfortunately others get caught in the shit storm too.

Well that is the quagmire we find ourselves in eh? The US had a huge advantage over the rest of the world in that it could tap into anything. The real question here is not what the criminals were doing (because we all know that already) it is what were the "good guys" doing with their advantage? And we are learning that they were doing many illegal things like; listening and copying trademark and private information from corporations overseas. It is now being said that this information was given to US companies so that they could have a financial advantage and so on and so on...

That's the thing, if it was just to go after the  scum bag criminals no one who really care but,.. the military, alphabet agencies and federal and local police have been illegally sharing information without warrants and due process and are using this power against their own regular citizens. WTF... this is what the Soviet Union and the eastern block used to do! Is that the future you want for your children.

Sure Edward  Snowden fucked the US but in my opinion they had it coming to them because they abused the power and didn't use it appropriately. They only have themselves to blame. In the end the US will never stop and I think they have been doing this since the web first came online. If they use it to stop ISIS and child porn then I applaud their efforts but if it is used for petty crime against their own citizens then the whole thing has to be scrapped. The United States of America (and all western countries for that matter) can not be in the business of spying on their own citizens period.

Mmm.. still only at $470 -- about as low as it's been since May.  Unfortunately I could only afford half a bitcoin back in January or February when it was still over valued, but I have confidence they will someday be the dominant internet currency and worth up to $100 000 each.  That's based on an internet economy of two trillion dollars.  Most will think my confidence is misplaced, but I was actually trying to conceive of an internet currency before I learned of bitcoin so I see the beauty in it.  Unfortunately I waited a year to act.
Bitcoin's not perfect and may fail in favour of another one, but it's gained so much traction I'm not willing to bet on the other cryptocurrencies like litecoin.

Not many people can afford to buy Bitcoins. Bitcoin is divisible to up to 8 decimals so really anyone can afford them HOWEVER what my brother and I did was mostly invest in the venture capital firms who are invested in creating the foundation and framework of bringing it to market.  8)

;) As I have predicted; U.S. federal trade commission watchdogs approve trading Bitcoin
http://online.wsj.com/articles/teraexchange-launches-bitcoin-derivatives-exchange-1410543989

This news was just posted online only 30 minutes ago. I can hear the foreheads dropping onto the desks as I type this with groans of, "I should of listed to that bitch."  :-X

Well you should of. Instead you chose to the predictable path of negativity and you got exactly what you deserved... nothing. While 99.9% of the membership of Bellgab dismissed cryptocurrencies and one member even declaring that this was the year it would jump the shark (still laughing at that one), what you missed out on was the crime of the decade. While everyone thought that all the problems with exchanges over seas and with the fbi silk road busts that the value of bitcoin would keep falling to zero, you missed out on the incredible buying opportunity that revealed itself right in front of your eyes.

As I yelled and screamed for everyone to wake the fuck up you were just too dumb to listen and recognize the greatest financial opportunity since the dot com craze of the 90's. So who was listening? Post after post I link articles of investors and financial groups investing billions of dollars into the framework and structure but the regular old man's brigade kept drinking and dribbling their regular bullshit. There was only ONE man who stepped up and said maybe she knows what she is talking about.

Don't worry about it guys. There will be another outstanding and even more financially fluid opportunity coming around in about 30 years. So you'll all have the chance to repeat your brilliance and do the exact same thing. At that time I'll be retiring off of the profits from the investments I have made into the capital management companies (some of which I listed in this thread) that have been major players.

So how many of you even own any bit coins?  Oh well then. Keep drinking and smoking weed. The aliens will be landing soon  :P

The FBI has recently released details on how the Silk Road black market was taken down.

While the transactions were secured by the Tor network, the Silk Road provided a misconfigured CAPTCHA that used elements from the open Internet. FBI investigators noticed this and, from there, were able to trace back to the main server. Some security experts remain skeptical of the technique described but cannot disprove it.

The article also goes on to explain how the TOR network works for those of you who don't know.

TOR still remains the safest way to roam web.

Recent article which touches on Tor, and other options.

One item that was new to me:

Even if you run Tor to anonymize every individual Internet application you use, your computer might still be leaking identifying info online. The NSA has even used unencrypted Windows error messages sent to Microsoft to finger users and track their identities.  Reference article

Yes of course! TOR is only a browser. There are many other ways that your computer leaks information and they in turn open access into your system. Every program you install is essentially an access point like, Adobe, Java, EVERYTHING! Any program that you use that wants access to the internet is a security concern. Even add-ons / apps to your firefox/chrome browser or phone leak information and can be used to gain access. The entire microsoft operating system is like stopping a waterfall with a kitchen sponge. TOR is only one slice of the pizza. It alone does enough for the average person but it is not enough to protect you from the military.

Although this is;there are operating systems being built like QUBES http://qubes-os.org/trac/wiki that in conjunction with TOR will make you essentially invisible. Even to the military.

AB 129, which Governor Jerry Brown had signed on Saturday, will ensure that “various forms of alternative currency such as digital currency” will be legal in purchasing goods and transmitting payments, according to the bill’s text. The bill reflects the growing use of digital currencies, revising Section 107 of California’s Corporations Code that prohibits use of “anything but the lawful money of the United States.”

“In an era of evolving payment methods, from Amazon Coins to Starbucks Stars, it is impractical to ignore the growing use of cash alternatives,” Democratic Assemblyman and the bill’s author Roger Dickinson said in a recent statement.

What you poor souls are entertaining is a type of cognitive bias; specifically confirmation bias and illusory correlation. These type of destructive thought patterns most often lead to Major Depression later in life.

Studies show that people who engage in this type of behaviour often become divorced, are argumentative, have poor relationships with parents and siblings, often change employers. It also can be an early sign of substance use disorder, anxiety disorders, social withdrawal and isolation, borderline personality disorder, paranoia and Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder.

If urge members here that if you notice similar behaviour in your children, nephews and nieces or other family members please take it seriously. Reach out to your family doctor. Seek help from a social worker or a mental health professional. Prepare a family intervention. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy has proven to be very successful if addressed early in life.

Tails is the secure system that protected Edward Snowden and is now considered the safest operating system in the world. I have previously mentioned Tails on another thread and ever since I have been researching the Project. This is the perfect time to try it because just a couple days ago it was updated to Tails 1.0 https://tails.boum.org/download/index.en.html

Tails is based on the Debian distribution of Linux and so it has the feel of a Linux based OS. However the set up is not as user friendly as Ubuntu for instance. Essentially you can just burn the OS onto a disk BUT not all computers (brands) can run it and forget about running it on Win8. Also not all flash drives will run the OS. All that information is found on the Tails website linked above. Of course it uses the TOR browser.

Here is a recent article that covers the main points of the project http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/29/5664884/this-is-the-most-secure-computer-you-ll-ever-own

I really don't care. When I am up at in the middle of the night waiting to pick someone up from the airport I really don't care about my grammar. In fact I make plenty of grammar mistakes. I also make spelling mistakes. Sometimes I make a wrong turn when I am driving to the Pharmacy.

I apologize for being an empathetic person and caring about people but if one grammar mistake is all that you can find fault with then I can happily live with that.

Making fun of grammar and spelling mistakes is the behaviour of the troll. It opens a window into the caustic mind of the individual and this type of behaviour over the internet interests me. Please feel free to continue behaving this way towards me.

Let us assume that you have successfully embarrassed me; how do you feel now? Does it empower you? Does it provide you pleasure? Does putting me down temporarily uplift you?

Yes, I find you very interesting indeed...

Hittin' that pipe pretty hard, are we stellar?

I find it very sad that people actually fall victim to these type mind programming over the internet. This is the exact type of propaganda that is spread by such repressive governments/organizations such as; North Korea, Iran, Jihadists and the KKK/white supremacy movement to recruit members.

We believe more in conspiracy theories when we have less wealth and power, when the questioned event happened in our early adulthood, and when the event had greater consequences. There is a direct correlation between conspiracy theory believers and income level. The believers are mostly males, non religious, early 20's, High School level of education... It (the interest in conspiracy theories) comes at a time in the believer's lives when they are searching for meaning. Because they lack the ability (criticle thinking skills) to take advantage of University, Church (Synagogue or Mosque) and Family resources they get caught in this trap where their mind creates meaning where there is none. Street culture gangs/organizations are all ready to take advantage of these ignorant young adults and are prepared with leaflets, books and internet websites propagandising the conspiracy theory(ies).

Beliefs in JFK conspiracies are highest among people aged 36 and over, while those between 20 and 35 are most likely to see a conspiracy behind the 9/11 attacks. Surprisingly, perhaps, the youngest age group â€" 19 and under â€" are least likely to endorse any theory. … Ethnic minorities â€" particularly African and Hispanic … are far more believing of conspiracy theories …

When asked if they believe in the most popular conspiracy theories (JFK assasination, 911 conspiracy and Aliens, spraying chemicals, Jews manipulating the world financial system for some dark purpose, NWO planning to take over the world, Obama birth certificate, and FEMA camps) participants were asked to include the following information;

1. Demographic information (age, gender, race, religious affiliation)

2. Social status questions (education, income, employment status, relationships)

3. Acceptance of different ideas (religion, magic, science, specific conspiracy theories)

These types of social studies have been increasing (as have the propagation of conspiracies) since the internet boom. At this time we have a coloured picture of the type of person that falls prey to the power of conspiracy theories and an in depth understanding of the sociology and the persistence of strange ideas.

Essentially, societal disempowerment increases the probability of belief.

The networks don't transmit over the air.  Local affiliates, most owned by other companies, do the transmission.

Networks have said if they lose the case, they might just take their programs and turn them into pay services. The implications of that would be devastating for local TV stations whose value is woven deeply into their network affiliation. The New York Times‘ David Carr offered this analysis:

The vast majority of people already get their television, including the broadcast networks, through their cable or satellite service. If Aereo wins, networks could let the antennas go dark and tuck themselves inside the cable and satellite universe, where, like AMC or ESPN, they would then be paid programming fees.

That would be bloody. There are over 200 local broadcast affiliates, all of which depend on networks for a share of revenue and much of their programming. Local news, which is part of their mandate as public broadcasters, might wither, and as existing contracts expired, there would be a brawl for lucrative local advertising. Companies that own large groups of local stations like the Tribune Company and the Sinclair Broadcast Group would suddenly find themselves in possession of a much diminished collection of assets.

If broadcasters lose, they will probably turn to Congress to change the law. The National Journal said:

If the Supreme Court concludes that Aereo isn’t violating the law, the first thing the broadcasters will probably try to do is get Congress to change the law. They argue that Aereo is trying to exploit a loophole in copyright law, and if the Court doesn’t shut the company down, then Congress should just close the loophole. Broadcasters continue to have impressive clout on Capitol Hill and are used to getting what they want.

heheh What if your fridge and your toaster don't get along?

Kidding but I really don't think that is going to be the end result of this technology. That is just how people understand this technology today. That is really just skimming the surface. Think more on the lines of Home Alarms, Smoke alarms, Carbon Monoxide alarms, Thermostat control, Foundation cracks, or having your hot water tank monitored...

I think it is going to be a one stop home monitoring system that also will act like a mini cloud internet; imagine coming home and opening the door and your house recognizes you by your cell phone and automatically gives you your home phone messages; or tells you that there is a problem with the furnace or a short circuit somewhere in the house... or even the supper that you were slow cooking is ready. As you walk through each room the lights dim brighter or softer as you leave. Better yet imagine if you left the oven on and left the house, your Nest System could call you and warn you about a potential problem.

There are a lot of exciting possibilities.

Aereo is basically a bunch of antennas right next to  the transmitter; so Aereo's business model in essence is they "rent" you one of their antennas. What you do with it is your business, and you are legally allowed to watch TV you receive through "your" antenna, regardless of where you live (this is how slingbox works). That is the argument their lawyers are making.

I think they might win because there is a considerable amount of computing that runs under similar legal usage laws-mainly data centers, where you rent the use of computers near a certain market, such as next to the New York Stock Exchange or in a low-cost power area.

I understand the technology and what they are doing. I have followed since the last hearings. Why? Because it has serious repercussions up here in Canada.

I may not have explained myself clearly; I think Aero will win the case in court. They have won every other attempt to stop them and as you have pointed out, their argument is strong.

Here's where they will lose; in the end the Networks will just stop transmitting over the airwaves. See where I am going here? There is no law stating that the Networks have to transmit over the airwaves. And so Aereo will lose.

In the end I am willing to bet 1 Satoshi of a Bitcoin that they do end up making a deal with the Networks. Similar to like when Netflix argued for Net neutrality but in the end now pays the telephone companies that control internet traffic to make sure the end user is able to watch the movies/tv shows stutter free.

Aereo may win theoretically/legally but financially in order for them to win they will have to make a deal with the Networks in the end. There is no way around this no matter the the legal results of this case are.

If you haven't heard about "Nest" then I suggest you look into it. It is an incredible idea and now that Google owns it the idea can actually have a chance to become reality. Venture Capitalists that invest in technology are all over this. Again, like Bitcoin, this idea will require you to see into the future or it will waft swiftly over your head.

I learned this from my older brother; When his friends announced a pregnancy he used to buy them Disney stock in the baby's name. As a stock holder you get certain travel benefits. Last year when my sister gave birth to her second child I bought baby James some stock in Google. There are no travel deals but Google is creating the future. Imo everyone should own some.

God SSRI's and SNRI's sure get a beating in the press. In medicine almost anything is possible. But for my money, no anti-depressant is the trigger for this kind of violence. This is psychopathic behavior. God is offended, I must take revenge. Pure and simple nuttery.

Terrible news... so sad.

However it is not as simple as you seem to think Onan. Let us be very clear here; there are significant differences between Psychosis, depression and PTSD.

Psychosis is split into 2 differant types of symptoms - Positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms are so called as something is 'added' to a persons life - auditory or visual hallucinations (voices, visions, etc), delusional beliefs, thought disorders (thoughts becoming jumbled, or stopping suddenly) and possible generalised/targeted paranoia. Negative symptoms are when something has been 'taken' from a persons life - poor motivation, reduced self esteem, and potential low mood.

Depression is a lowering of the mood, normally following a significant event or series of life stressors. Stress (positive and negative stressers) in normal day to day life may also be the cause of hightened anxiety.

Suicide attempts can stem from both depression or psychosis. If a person is feeling hopeless and sees no future for themselves, or a chance of changing things for them then risk indicators would show them at a hightened chance of suicide.

PTSD is a very expensive diagnosis because in most cases it requires long term therapy. This destructive behaviour that played out at Fort Hood is not unique to the USA. Modern day armed forces around the world in all western countries are experiencing the exact same problems. Men and woman committing suicide. These people are not psychopaths. This is not an "I hate the world', or "If I can't have you then no one will" scenario. It is much more complex than that.

Although PTSD has been known by many other names (shellshock, ect.) and it has been around for a long time the Army does not have the medical capabilities to provide proper medical therapy and supervision. Because these soldiers have to be treated by a Psychiatrist (for the medication) and a Psychologist (for the cognitive behaviour therapy)not to mention the other general doctors involved, treating these patients is an endless money pit. This is one reason the Armed forces are hesitant to make a PTSD diagnosis. The other reason is that they just don't have enough qualified therapists to treat the numbers of cases.

This is not only a military problem and a problem that all of society must deal with. Unfortunately I don't see the military doing anything more than they are doing right now because in truth they can't solve and treat the problem themselves. It will take local and state and federal interventions and new health care policies. Until that happens the predictable result is that this type of event will repeat itself.

In the current political climate surrounding US health care, I don't see any changes happening any time soon.

as i said , its not only possible, i did it. it is not a "real" image file, rather a fake file to hold the javascript. all attempts to insert image data and the javascript was not run. however if you ran the fake file in <img src="fake.gif"> tags  it would load and not throw an error. it would run the javascript instead. this is tested as a means of hiding javascript in a html file so as to make it "invisible" (you cant see the code when you click "view source code" in a browser).

/*edit*/
you may need to load the gif under <src script> tags and not image tags. i cant remember and cant find the test files i did a while back.

lol no silly ;)- I understand you have done it. What I meant to ask; Is it possible that I may have read about a similar technique in WIRED or another magazine like that?

Your idea is very ingenious in a Doctor Evil sort of way *cue pinky in mouth* muhuhahaha
