This is heard frequently when there is a swing to the right against 'big government.' But, I find there are 'nanny staters' on both of the major sides of the political spectrum and I'm not really sure what the Obama Presidency did to 'tell others what is good for them.'

There certainly are those on the left who are anti gambling and anti fat foods or whatever, but there are those on the right as well (anti gambling especially.)
On the right though, there are many who want to tell women and girls what they can't wear (school dress codes), they want to tell gays who they can and can't marry, and I'll leave abortion aside because I know some conservatives would say there is another life involved, but I personally don't think a two month old fetus is a human.

I've commented already that I think the social justice warriors are now going to be replaced for the next four years by the social redneck warriors, but the reality is a President and a political party can't control the causes that some of those on the left may get involved in.

I would also note for Americans, that if Trump does impose large tariffs on China, for many poorer Americans he will be practically telling them what they can and can't buy.  Hardly a way to conduct a 'just let me have my toaster and my steel belted radio presidency.'
I think we are going to find Trump is a really a moderate democrat, not a hard right republican.  All of this talk about him being against non-whites is really just election rhetoric.  I do hope he enforces existing immigration law.  I am not against legal immigration.  If I showed up in Canada and said I am fleeing the US, I'd be sent back.  Corporations need to be punished for hiring illegal workers.  That is really the only way to fix the immigration issue. If I am wrong, I hope the democrats run a viable candidate in 4 years to swing more towards the center.  The outliers on either side, left or right, are just nuts.  Unfortunately they are the ones MSM cover since they are so sensational.  All of this talk about the death of the losing party after every election is just smoke being blown by MSM to ensure big money during the next election cycle.  I am not sure this can really be fixed.

BTW I am going to order that book you posted.  I have an MBA but am not an economics expert.   Have you read The Worldly Philosophers by Robert L. Heilbroner?  I thought it was well presented.

Hillary Clinton ended up winning Connecticut by a bigger margin than she was leading initially and Donald Trump won Kansas bigger than he was leading initially.

If you look at the heavily white states that have traditionally voted Democratic: The Pacific Northwest, Minnesota and Wisconsin and New England, Trump did better in all of them except for Washington State.  Although according to the exit polls, under 40 whites are still leaning Democratic, I think it would be hard to deny there was a white backlash against something, whether it was the Black Lives Matter movement or the so-called Social Justice Warriors or the feeling that Hillary Clinton if not the Democratic Party has become part of the wealthy establishment.

1.Hard to say, The Republican Party still has major divisions and the Democratic Party obviously will be in shock.  However, Hillary Clinton still won the popular vote which, cold comfort, but the Democrats have now won the national popular vote in six of the last seven elections.

It would have been nice had Governor Johnson received 5% of the vote, which would have given the Libertarians automatic ballot access for the next Presidential vote.  There are a lot of loony libertarians so they also have a lot to work on, but they have some valid ideas as well, in my opinion

2.One of my friends said that to me about Trump.  I said that he is a genuinely deranged authoritarian and he said it was just an act because he realized better than anybody that there are a lot of angry voters out there and his outbursts were just playing to their sentiments.

I hope he is right.

3.One reason Hillary Clinton lost is because the Bernie Sanders types complained she was too centrist.  I don't know how much more to the center she could be on economics and on foreign policy, she has been correctly criticized in my opinion for being too much of a neo-conservative herself.  I guess you may be referring to social issues like immigration but, I don't think it's practical to boot 11-15 million illegals out of the United States.

It's actually not all that easy to punish small businesses for hiring illegal aliens because they're paid under the table in cash and aren't officially hired.  If the legal authorities get a hold of the tax records of small businesses it would actually be fairly easy to find small businesses that employ illegals because it's actually not hard to figure out if a small business has a large amount of revenue per employee, but I don't know if this is the best use of police time.

Also, they legal authorities need a court order to access IRS Records and a lot of judges would likely regard looking for hiring of illegal aliens through searching the tax records as a fishing expedition and I suspect they'd deny the court order.

If this is the case, it wouldn't surprise me though if the police start getting a large number of calls from people complaining that all sorts of small businesses are employing illegal aliens.

4.One of the problems with Trump turning out to be a 'moderate' of either party is what is he going to say?  Building the wall?  Ripping up trade agreements?  Massive Deportations of illegals?... "You didn't actually believe me did you?"  If he was just playing to people's anger, he's going to have a lot of angry ex-supporters.

If I may criticize our lord MV, he lied.  Trump won Texas by 9% So, just short of double digits.

According to the exit polls, Trump did better with Latinos by around 6-7% than Mitt Romney did. I don't see how this can be the case as Hillary Clinton did better than President Obama did in 2012 in the Southwestern states of Arizona and Texas.  New Mexico was about the same in the 'two party preferred vote' meaning excluding Governor Johnson and only in Nevada did Obama do better in 2012 than Hillary Clinton.  This was actually not a surprise as it had already been observed that a fair number of Latino working class voters supported Donald Trump as did the white working class voters.

According to the exit polls Obama won 72% of the Latino vote and Hillary Clinton won around 66% of the Latino vote.

The New Democratic Party is already down to about 10% support in Canada.  I think this election is going to embolden the progressives who supported Bernie Sanders.  It's hard to believe they won't be thinking that Bernie Sanders would have defeated Trump.

Good for you.  Voting is just the first part in being involved in politics. Now comes the hard part in making sure that Donald Trump runs an ethical administration and keeps his promises, whatever they may be.

I wonder if President Trump will pardon Julian Assange.

i've wondered the same thing, but then i ask myself, "pardon assange for what?"  certainly not treason, as assange is not an american citizen.

A lone bright spot for Democrats: the nasty Republican governor of North Carolina, Pat McCrory has lost by 5,000 votes with all the votes counted.

How do I ignore reproach? Asking for a Clinton.

I'm terrible with names, one person here commented earlier that you assured him that Trump would win Texas by more than 10%.  I guess he was joking.

California, Massachusetts and Nevada, but not Arizona voted to legalize marijuana.  Maine is still too close to call.

Heh, I have to ask the same question people ask me here: why is a non American citizen so obsessed with the U.S election?

I'm pretty sure it goes into effect in 2018 so I still have a year to flaunt the law. Still getting ready to take kid to school so have not checked- did the AZ legalization pass?

No.

I wonder if it lost due to the unpopularity of legalizing marijuana in Arizona or if it was due to the proposed 15% tax on legal marijuana and the concern that would still leave a large illegal market.

From the CNN website, Minnesota is now 100% counted and narrowly won by Hillary Clinton.  CNN hasn't given the state to her yet.  There are a handful of small counties in New Hampshire where no vote count has been reported. Michigan is still a toss up.

Georgia is also 100% counted despite CNN still reporting it at 95%

CNN was sort of right to wait on not giving Wisconsin to Trump earlier as he will likely end up winning the state by about 25,000 votes.

I'm not sure what the problem is in New Hampshire.  Governor Maggie Hassan has an 800 vote lead over incumbent Senator Kelly Ayotte. I'm not sure if I want Hassan to win or lose. From what I've seen of her she seems to be a craven politician who backs up the dishonest talking points of the other party in order to advance herself and appear to be 'bipartisan.'

Michigan is still too close to call. There are maybe 30-40,000 votes still outstanding in Washtenaw County and Hillary Clinton is winning that county by 67.7-27.5%. There are still a handful of votes outstanding in Wayne County as well which ended up going heavily for Hillary Clinton.

It looks like it was the Panhandle that gave Florida to Trump.

In terms of political survival, I would suggest to Senator Manchin that he really should join the Republican Party.
