Winter Holiday Thread

Nothing will get you in the mood to share some intimate moments with that special someone or a random stranger like Dusty Towne's "Sexy Holiday Special."

Thank you Robert- that was hilarious! Catherine O'Hara was one of my favorites from SCTV.

Just make sure you don't send this card to the wrong people...

Rix Gins- what a lovely table and thank you for including us. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. Enjoy and come back here for New Years.  ;)

Here's a little something for your dessert table. I made this cake a couple of years ago and found the pictures while going through files- I'm preparing for an overdue computer upgrade.

Beautiful cake!  Could it possibly be a fruitcake under all that decoration?  I've been subsisting on fruitcake and eggnog for a week and still can't get enough.

I remember reading some of my mom's old recipes and the decorating suggestions often mention candied angelica finely cut to make holly leaves, etc.  I assume it was green.  I've never seen candied angelica anywhere.

Merry Christmas K_Dubb and thank you. Not fruitcake but a vanilla/princess cake with buttercream frosting and hand made fondant decorations.

I've never attempted to make fruitcake but I would imagine the right recipe is key. I've seen the candied fruit used as you described but I'm not familiar with them. I would try a speciality baking supply company. Not sure if they ship internationally or not or at what expense-

Here are some raucous, rowdy holiday sentiments from The Kinks.

I heard that for the very first time on the radio today; it is pants.

As two years ago; this Christmas will be a joint of lamb with the trimmings. I highly recommend it. If I can cook it, anyone can. Naturally, Yorkshire puddings are compulsory.

Oh Merry Christmas to you too!  I saw those beautiful frosty green leaves you made and thought maybe.   Fruitcake is easy, just lots of ingredients.  I make mine so spicy it's nearly unpalatable fresh from the oven.  But after a week of mellowing it's perfect.

Those look both tempting and beautiful, IB. Thank you for the recipes and for the extra time I'm going to have to spend on the tread mill.  ;)

My, my- you are a man of many talents, Mr. Yorkshire pud!   :)

All this talk about fruitcake makes me remember when I was a kid working cold storage for a well known, mail order gift company that did indeed produce fruitcakes and I had to store box fulls of them in the cold room.  One day I was storing them away and was totally done in with hunger.  Luckily for me, one of the boxes "accidentally" fell off the pallet and was damaged.  Well, I couldn't let it go to waste now, could I?  I opened it up and helped myself to it.  Giant, glazed cherrys, pineapples walnuts and who knows what, held together with some ultra rich batter mix.  Three bites of the stuff and I was totally full!  I'm thinking K_Dubb woulda' liked it.  lol

Here's a good copy from the official SCTV Youtube channel:

Thanks for posting this RGG, it jogged a few memories no doubt. Images and sounds from Divine's musical number on ice have haunted me for years and I couldn't recall where they came from.

And now we're only one day away:

Cool! Never heard that one before. Debbie Harry still looks and sounds great! Well, I'd do her anyway, were I so lucky. And before anyone starts in on me I know she's ancient but GILFs are where it's at. All that gorgeousness AND experience  :P I know they had their time in the sun but I always kinda wished Blondie had done more.

Wasn't she the first rapper to have a no 1 hit with Rapture?

Not sure. Could be. I remember the song and it was before most white people heard any black artists doing that so probably.

Watching the seabirds at the ferry dock on my way to my folks' on the island brought to mind these from Milton:

Peaceful was the night
Wherein the Prince of Light
His reign of peace upon the earth began.
The winds, with wonder whist,
Smoothly the waters kissed,
Whispering new joys to the mild ocean,
Which now had quite forgot to rave,
While birds of calm sit brooding on the charmed wave.

from his Christmas Ode http://www.bartleby.com/106/62.html which we read every year as a sort-of grown-up Night Before Christmas.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
