It has nothing to do with Tune in, would be the same with a direct link

What we want is a seamless experience for all which is why we are going to use tune in, if Grandma just gets tune in and puts my name in, poof it works one way or the other.

That link allows you to compare 48 AAC with 128 MP3 and it's really hard to tell them apart, amazing. I think we will go with 48AAC and 48 MP3. If listening to tune in it will default to whatever your device can handle. Most all phones and tablets will do AAC no problem. Computers are a mixed bag, if using Chrome they will do AAC, if not they will default to MP3.

Ok this is really cool, try this link and compare, the 48k vs higher MP3 stream. Opinions please.

Ok, based on all your testing we are looking for a 48kbps stream, if it sounds good we will go for AAC+ and MP3 both at 48kbps the AAC+ will sound much better but we will have both.... Looking for a test link now.

Thank you all for the testing, it does seem that despite the fact that it says it is 32kbps when you check on the tune in page, it is in fact 64kbps AAC and it is plus even though nobody puts the plus in their listing.

All this requires thinking about the best way to go. Thank you all for the testing, that's what it's all about.

Ok looks like Chrome works. All phones and pads I think work fine. That is the most amazing sound for 32Kbps Stereo...Amazing!

I really really want that 32 AAC+ but a lot of computers will not do it, so I guess we we have to have a combo.

How many of you know that when u get a raw windows 7 machine the first thing you do is download 133 updates and that is the first stage then you get more and more, it is a full one minimum day project. Then you can start downloading software, then you get more updates, then you want to drink heavily even though you don't drink.

The ONLY reason you are in the up's and Down's with me in this project is because I choose to share them with this group. If that is simply to painful for some I can stop, this is a evolving affair and I am sure there will be more to suffer through.

Keith is a slightly cranky very bright guy who has a hell of a lot to do as do I. I have been building (2) Laptop computers for the studio for the last two days from scratch and just that has me in a foul mood. Windows 7 from scratch.

There are a lot of very smart people on here and your input has been valuable.

A delay is mandatory not because somebody might say a bad word but because of Defamation, much bigger problem and I will have one.

My thanks for all the talk on bit rates and AAC+ there are some smart people in here and some cranky ones, but I always knew that.

128Kbps is cool unless you trying to send it to 70,000 people.

The absolute hardest thing to try and do is guess how many people will show up. I can guess from 5,000 to who the hell knows, I plan to be happy and have fun no matter what.

Now I have something NEW! It turns out we can provide a 32Kbps AAC+ stream as well as a standard 32 Kbps stream. AAC+ is nothing short of amazing, it will sound as good or better then 64Kbps. If you doubt it find a station at 32AAC+ and take a listen, my goodness it is good and we can offer a choice, bottom line we use half the bandwidth and so do you. The World keeps changing. 48Kbps AAC+ sounds better then 128.

No limit on Podcasts of course. The rub is we have to limit the number of live listeners to 65-70K. No way to guarantee entry, first come first served. We will not and can not charge for the live stream.

Ok guys here is some not such great news, we are going to have to cap the live listener number to between 65-70 thousand. The reason for this is easy, the stupid music. If we go over that it gets mind numbing expensive, I am not saying impossible but very expensive if we knock ourselves out of the small Webcaster catagory. So I guess it will be first come first served and we will not open the big bandwidth doors until 9PM P.T.

Now if somebody picked up our stream and sent it out from some far flung overseas place, well hmmm not much we could do about that, right?

We do want tight control of the Podcast, we are ready for volunteers, if you would like to help please contact Keith at kr@rowlandnet.com and help us with Podcast Pirates (mostly utube)

All of this may not be a problem anyway, I might be lucky to scare up 10,000 . We shall see

Wow, I just saw a ad for HBO which is going to open its doors directly on the Internet. My goodness this is all coming down much faster then even I thought. I can only wonder what is going on in Board rooms in company's like IHateArt and the others out there that have collected Billions of Dollars in Radio stations, love to be a bug on that wall.

It is possible to cover more People with a Internet stream then 600 Stations can even think about. We are truly in the middle of a sea change and it is in favor of the content providers this time! The only thing they still have going for them is people's habits and those are about to change.

I am still puzzled why those who have gone to the Internet have not done so live, there is magic in live content, anyway to quote a CNN show "Somebody's gotta do it" and it might as well be me. Mark my words, there will be many to follow.

Right, AAC+ is something very new and very interesting. We are looking into it because if as advertised it sounds every bit as good as 64 that's half the bandwidth for us and you, it will have to be proven to me. I hope it's true. As long as my music sounds good I am up for it.

Are we back up? Ok, looks like we are. Does anybody know about 32Kbps AAC+ ? I have been told it can sound every bit as good as regular 64 and would sure save Bandwidth. Something we are looking into.

From Keith:The Final Results, Art Bell IS Coming Back!
POSTED ON APRIL 14, 2015 IN BUMPER MUSIC, RADIO SHOW | 1 VIEW | LEAVE A RESPONSE
After extensive analysis and elongated negotiations with several suiters, we have decided that we can go ahead on the planned launch of “Midnight in the Desert” in late July, using a business model that will allow us to manage the entire operation on our own.

As was hinted by Art via his Facebook feed, we thought about it, compared the numbers and decided we could pay for bandwidth, pay the commercial licensing fees, pay our own overhead and still be financially viable, assuming the following conditions:

1. We have a considerable number of fans subscribe to a membership service that allows you to access the archived shows anytime via the website for a reasonable $5 / month.

2. We can sell advertising to be played during the breaks during the show. Not a lot, but enough to help pay for the music licensing during the LIVE FREE stream.

3. We can successfully curb pirated posts of our content to the Internet.

We’ll be operating under a certain specific licensing model that will allow us to ramp up from a “small webcaster” status into a large broadcaster in the future. It is imperitive that we earn enough through subscribers and ads sales to pay the bandwidth costs and music licensing fees. We believe that we can ramp up successfully using the current models in place at this time.

However, this happens to be the year (2015) that music industry participants are negotiating the next 5 years (2016-2020) rates for music licensing on the Internet. It is a wide open arena, and some license models may not survive. But we believe that we can operate under the current 2015 model for 6 months, and eventually fit into a 2016 model that is still cost effective.

We hope to recoup  all of our investments within the first 6 months, so we can better endure the cost increases that will inevitably happen in 2016. If the fans support us with memberships and the advertisers are satisfied, we should be good for a long while.

Keep watching here for the launch date announcement and further updates as we can pass along. We’ll let you know when it’s time to promote the show.

A lot of the early shows were recorded on VHS video tape! So the quality was so-so. Those were days that if you needed a replay you just threw in a video tape and hit play.
