Quote from: K_Dubb on September 09, 2022, 05:27:33 AMOh you poor thing!  I just watched Parliament observe a minute of silence, the almighty effort of forcibly stifling all that maudlin yapping to be followed by 10 hours (!) of tributes by way of compensation.

The English are a grotesquely sentimental, profoundly silly people, and now you have a profoundly silly king.

I think it's sentimental and more the appreciation of a job well done.

Bear in mind, given the opportunity and the government of the day wanting the Royal family to go to Australia when bombs started dropping on London (including Buck house), they stayed. Elizabeth drove ambulances and maintained them. 9/10's of the UK and Commenwealth population have never known anyone but her as monarch.

So yeah, it will get soppy and dignified in equal measure, the actual funeral and commemoration will be precise to the second. The military escorts etc have rehearsed this and that too will be perfect.

As said, even republicans (small r) who dislike the idea of a monarchy accept the Queen did it right, how many world famous people have had so much affection and respect by so many for seventy years? She's the last if that standing.

And as for silliness, and needless sentimentality, sone Americans can turn on the waterworks if they so much as look at the stars and stripes. Much of it is disingenuous, similar to 'thoughts and prayers'.

Quote from: Dr. MD MD on September 08, 2022, 08:33:20 PMRussian hasn't been communist for the past 30 years. Therefore, there's no longer any need for NATO.

Understand?

Also, what proof do you have that Putin is "trigger happy" or even a despot? It's just more of your unfounded ad hominem and frankly, he seems like a better, more faithful leader to his people than the current round of globalist shitheels we have going in the West, who seem ready and willing to sell us out to the highest bidder, even if that's China. They seem like despots.

If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand. Just don't say anything he won't like and then find yourself next to a five plus storey window... ARe you really Steven Seagal?

Quote from: albrecht on September 08, 2022, 08:18:29 PMAt a wedding a couple years ago and brides dad had some kinda record glider flight. Says amazing. No noises and float around. In your area (ha in America we can say this) but around San Diego. Met a German once on a normal plane who had restored some vintage gliders and also was enthused with them. (He probably was figuring next war plans.)

Here's a little 13 plus foot wingspan vintage 1/4 scale glider..Minimoa. Due to the Versailles treaty, Germany wasn't allowed (officially at least) to make powered aircraft, so they got very good at gliders, and still are.

I started it in 2011,,finished it 18 months ago. Minus the canopy. You cannot view this attachment. You cannot view this attachment.

Quote from: Dr. MD MD on September 08, 2022, 07:47:00 PMIs there anything you won't rationalize at the establishment's behest?

The establishment? Quick recap of the last 80 or so years...

Nuclear fission was developed. From that a pair atomic bombs were built and delivered on Japan, which effectively ended WW2 in Asia. The Germans were also working on same but the end of the war curtailed that little excursion.

Post War, the German scientists were divided up twixt the Soviet Union and the soon to be formed NATO.

What started was what the history books called 'The cold war'. Basically both sides have enough nuclear weapons to destroy life on Earth many times over. This uneasy understanding ensures that the execution is so terrible that neither side would do the unthinkable unless attacked. Submarines/silos with missiles; stand off bombs etc were all developed to leave the other side in no doubt that such capabilities were easily attainable.

Fast forward to late 80's early 90's and the cold war is getting colder, until massive amounts of both sides' weaponry is stood down until the possibility of the unthinkable is receding.. However, in comes a certain Mr Putin who although  his weaponry is vastly inferior to that of NATO, it's still capable of terrible destruction. His bitterness at the fall of the Soviet Union and the 'westernising' of the new Russia and it's satellite countries that were in the SU consumes him. And as a former Colonel in the KGB he's got some scores to settle with NATO and any former SU country that is now a democracy who has designs to join NATO or the EU.

One particular thorn is Ukraine; the previous President was a useful Putin ally but was voted out and the incoming (and current) President is less partial to Putin and the people in the new democracy agreed.

Putin, ever the sabre rattling tyrant, launched attacks and continues to do so on Ukraine because he's a tyrant and despot.

Russia holds nuclear weapons, with a trigger happy despot at the controls..NATO also has nuclear weapons, and if Putin made the decision to ever launch them on a NATO country, NATO would almost certainly retaliate.

So although she's crap, Liz Truss is merely reiterating decades of NATO policy.

Understand?

Quote from: albrecht on September 08, 2022, 07:48:50 PMThere is likely a setting if you don't want notifications somewhere. Thanks for the sardines!  Though the Queen Maxima who is visiting here from The Netherlands for some reason says you really should try the New Herring.

The Swedes have a revolting delicacy..

https://travelfoodatlas.com/surstromming-swedish-stinky-fish-delicacy

People are most familiar with the its title of 'the smelliest food in the world' – although possibly Greenlandic Kiviak or the Icelandic Hákarl could give it a run for its money!

Knives, shampoo, lighter fluid, weapons, Surströmming. What do all these things have in common?

Well all of them are banned from being taken on an airplane!

So what makes Swedish delicacy Surströmming as dangerous to passengers health as a knife wielding maniac?

That would be the pungent smell of, to quote those that have smelled it 'hell on earth'. This is what you get when you ferment herring fish then put it in a pressurised tin.

The herring breaks down and releases all sorts of acids like propionic acid, butyric acid and acetic acid, giving it a sour taste. The big one is hydrogen sulfide which smells like gone off eggs.

The advice given is to open the tin outside, as the smell of the fermented herring can overwhelm you and liquid squirts everywhere from the container. Definitely not one for a quick office snack.

What does Surströmming taste like?

Quote from: albrecht on September 08, 2022, 07:18:28 PMWas in London once in they had very cool flyovers of vintage planes. Memory vague but I think Remembrance Day cause they dropped poppies. And another during some anniversary or something. I forget. B-52, I think B-52H, will do flyover before our game against Alabama on Saturday.

Long since retired but Vulcans used to be a quite a loud (Well, REALLY loud) display event at airshows.

Fun fact; when scrambling from hot (all pre flights done, engines turning) B52's hit the runway threshold from the stand at 60mph.

Quote from: Dr. MD MD on September 07, 2022, 07:46:38 PMThen how could you support such a corrupt asshole as Biden, who has only increased the suffering of average people with rampant inflation, censorship and now criminalizing his opposition?!

Oh for fucks sake!! I don't support Biden, I wanted another primary, but he got it, so fair enough. But at least he isn't a vapid, clueless, narcissist whose ONLY interest is himself and how he can make things work for him alone.

Very few things a POTUS does affects inflation, good or bad. What censorship?
As for criminalising the opposition. Biden has nothing to do with it; unlike Trump who flaunted that the AG was 'his', he even sacked ironically his first supporter in the Senate who was AG because he recused himself!

The FBI (Trump appointed director) has executed a search warrant that they shouldn't have had to do. 18 months trying at first politely getting trump to return docs he shouldn't have in his possession, until finally they had to go get same he said he didn't have. Up to and including information that may endanger embedded spies in countries putting them and their families in extreme danger. For what? His fucking ego? To sell to the highest bidder?

Is Biden perfect?, not at all, but to bang on about trump being the panacea for the USA is preposterous. He has ONE passion, himself. Serious question okay? You don't need to answer here. If and when the shit really hits the fan who do you think trump WILL throw under the bus? His two sons? His wife? Jared? We both know he won't admit he's done anything wrong will he?

That being the case, why do you think he'd have your interests at heart? Do you really thunk he gives a shit about those who worship him? Howard Stern who does know him very well, says he despises the very people who support him.

Quote from: Dr. MD MD on September 07, 2022, 07:33:11 PMI've said here before if I had a nuclear bomb I'd drop it on Bilderberg or Davos, the people Biden and the Dems represent. You support them and are therefore a hypocrite who probably doesn't give a shit about the average man's life, the way you constantly condescend to working class people.

Oh go on, I'm game, which working class people have I been condescending to?

Little bit of family history for you.

My paternal grandfather was a coal miner..from 14 to 64 when he was invalided out, he died aged 67 of pneumonicosis. Know what that is? It means coughing up your lungs and basically drowning on the contents. The contents of 50 years working underground.

My dad was a truck driver.

My maternal grandfather aged 17 fought in the first world war, as one if the few who could drive, he was taken from fighting in the front line at Ypres, and instead drove dead and wounded soldiers FROM the front line. After the war he took himself through college and was an engineer.

So when it comes to not empathising with the working class, draw your own. Meanwhile, fuck yourself.
