Best Halloween Movies Ever

I'm trying to compile a list of movies for Halloween that are part horror, part gross and with parts that will make you laugh (as in comic rather than an insanity). Good example is, "The Return of the Living Dead". Was trying to find, "The Midnight Hour". Found it but they want over $200 or a DVD if you can find one. Netflix doesn't have it for rental. Heard it is a super Halloween movie. So, watcha got?

Phantasm is great. I've always been particularly creeped out by the Pinhead movies (Hellraiser).

999

I like Gremlins and Basketcase for funny/scary. Not a big gore fan.

Eddie Coyle

"The Omen", "Terror Train", "Prom Night" were stand bys when I was a kid(early 80's). Those movies were guaranteed to air between Oct 27-31.

The Amityville Horror is always good...

... Except for part 3-d (analglyph) where dude tries to go flowers-in-the-attic with his sister.

Horror with some campy and funny moments...
Hmm well Return of the Living Dead comes to mind right away (you already mentioned that one).

Other than that probably
The Re-animator
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089885/

Blood for Dracula
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071233/

Black Sheep
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0779982/

XTro
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086610/

CHUD
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087015/

Swamp Thing (sort of horror)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084745/

and maybe Starship Troopers

I didnt find Phantasm that funny (but really liked it). I put it more with the good/serious horror that came out around then such as the Fog, Magic, the Thing, Wolfen, American Werewolf in London, Elm Street, the Beyond    kind of movies.

Terror Train is my old standby - love it.

I also like:

Trick 'r Treat (2007)
Wolf Creek (2005)
My Boyfriend's Back (1993) - really cheesy but I've always liked it as a lead in to scarier movies.

Evil Twin - thanks much. This is part one ... do you have additional parts or where did you get this one so I can view more if they have them?

Hey ziz, thanks for the info. That is a really cool mask. Uh, I do need to ask however ... are you a dog?

I'm not a fan of gore fests or the Neo-Vampiric erotic romance-novels-on-film (or should that now be "novels in 0's and 1's"?,) although I can get into survivalists vs. zombie movies like 28 Days Later and Weeks, as well as the AMC series The Walking Dead. For fun it's Sleepy Hollow or Young Frankenstein. For kids, Hocus Pocus maybe.

But one of my all-time favorites is a little gem hidden in the accumulated dust of time. From 1932 and the early days of horror films is The Old Dark House, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023293/, which starred Boris Karloff, Charles Laughton, Melvyn Douglass and a beautiful and sexy 22-year-old named Gloria Stuart...whom you might know better for her role 65 years later as "Old Rose" in a little art film called Titanic.

TODH is a film that was a ground-breaker in it's day, and it introduced many touches that became standard in horror films. We have a "dark and stormy night", a waylaid group of travelers who must seek refuge in an eerie torchlit English mansion, a set of elderly siblings who are each crazy and dangerous in their individual way. The unhappy and bickering travelers at first fight amongst themselves but then must band together to defend against homicidal maniacs; disfigured and sexually perverted servants; religious fanaticism so severe and perverse it would have been at home in the bonfires of The Spanish Inquisition; and an unknown threat kept hidden away for decades under lock and key. Great fun.

US Army MI-I-5 Optical Gas Mask circa 1941 made specifically because the regular masks caused problems when viewing through scopes, binocks and the like.  The filter tubes went around the sides to the back where the actual filter was held. Made aiming a gun easier without the filter in front.  One of my favorite gas masks.

Guild ... that picture is awesome. Now ask yourself this ... are some of those picto-glyphs on rock columns etc. actually showing space aliens (the botanists, of course) experimenting with terrestrial "herbs"? Might they depict aliens throwing a party after so much time traveling all those light years? No wonder they keep hanging around. Probably the best high within 25,000 light years !

I've got "The Midnight Hour" on that ancient stuff called VHS.  Others I'd suggest would be Vincent Price's "The Last Man on Earth,"  "Halloween III," and "Night of the Comet."  Vincent's version is a "spaghetti" flick but even with the dubbing, Vincent makes Will Smith look like he should just stick to singing "Going to Miami."  "Halloween III" is so bad, it's almost eerily good.  It veers from the Michael psycho to a creepy Daniel O'Herlihy and a song that will drive you bonkers.

Also, don't forget some of the MST3K renditions, such as "Manos: The Hands of Fate."  Some folks like "Carnival of Souls," but it's just TOO badly done for me to stick with but it does have an eerie quality to it.

I totally agree with you on Halloween III: Season of the Witch.  It's nothing like the others in the series, but it's oddly addicting.  I try to catch it every year around Halloween.

Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness should definitely be on this list.

Phantasm, Re-Animator and CHUD are all good picks.

I'd also recommend Slither. It's a newer flick (2006?) from James Gunn, who wrote the remake of Dawn of the Dead. It's a sci-fi/body horror/comedy and it's very funny and self-effacing. And fairly gory too.

Excellent pick! "Manos: Hands of Fate" might be Mystery Science Theater 3000's finest hour! Super funny.

The Tingler:

THE TINGLER TRAILER 1959 VINCENT PRICE

William Castle - Introduction to "The Tingler"

Not very scary, but absolutely hilarious in an Ed Wood sort of way. Also quite an interesting concept.

I'll bet the Silver Shamrock song was going through your head as you typed.  ;)  Please don't curse me for it.

Oh, yeah.  Castle's "The Tingler" and "Macabre" freaked me out when I saw them in my younger years.
