IIRC Disney produced a slew of cartoon shorts in the 30's that used classical music. They were called something like Classical Cartoons ... duh.  A great way to introduce classical music to the kiddies

I think you're referring to Silly Symphonies and they're great cartoons.  ;)

I think Bugs and Daffy used classical music, too.  That was the insidious stuff.

Kill the wabbit...kill the wabbit...I bet you're already humming the tune in your head.  :D

To me the Warner Bros. cartoons of that era are in the Pantheon of Funniest Cartoons.  ;)

That's it! Thanks Dr. MD. And not to slight Warner Bros. Cartoons ... What's up Doc?

Not much. Just taking some time to get motivated to start crossing things off my never-ending To Do list.  ;)

That's me naturally but I can only take so much chaos building up around me before I have to start reordering. Damn you, entropy!  >:(

I thought you folks might enjoy some trivia about this classic comedian.  Sure Andy was good, but this guy made the show.

If Comet TV is in your area, either OTA, cable, or satellite, you may want to check it out this month, if you enjoy Vincent Price.  They're showing "Masque of the Red Death" and "Diary of a Madman," this month.  I just caught both of them this week and they're some of Price's best.  They're also showing Price's "The Last Man on Earth," which has always been one of my favorites.

Comet started out last year as a scif-fi/ horror channel, specializing in the newer '90s "Outer Limits," "Stargate" series, and ultra-cheesy sci-fi/ horror movies, stuff even I wouldn't waste my time with, but they seem to be upping their game, recently, with some better sci-fi/ horror, such as Vincent, and they're now showing the classic, original "Outer Limits" on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Any of you guys ever see the Russian film Come and See? I'm kind of struggling with my perception of it. On one hand I didn't care for it as it seemed like surrealist inhumanity porn. On the other hand it's still on my mind a few months after the first time I saw it. What do any of you think about it?

Caught "China Seas" (1935) on TCM.  Pretty entertaining movie.  Clarke Gable was good but Jean Harlow really makes an impression.  Some great dialogue and good effects especially a storm scene.  Ms. Harlow captured the role of the unrefined but soulful gal smitten with the ship's captain, playing a character both feisty and vulnerable.  I can see why she captivated audiences back then.

Love Gable and Harlow own their own but together they sizzle! My favorite movie with the two of them is Red Dust

I have a spooky movie I saw a portion of (watched in a Moscow hotel room in the mid 90s, film dubbed into French) I've been trying to  identity for many years.  B&W film, I'm guessing made in the 40s, maybe early 50s, I think from the UK.  The movie was about a couple children who kept seeing a lady (ghost? angel?) who seemed very kind to them, but their parents (including I think a stepmother) seemed to get more and more nervous as the childrens' descriptions of the lady got more detailed.  I think at the end something tragic, or near tragic occurred.  The ghost might have been the kids' birth mother, but I'm not sure.

Ring a bell with any one?

You guys ever get into the Lux Radio Theater shows? They're pretty incredible hour long radio adaptions with the Stars from the original films. They have adaptations of a lot of the classic films. A good place to start is Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart or Fancy Pants with Bob Hope and Lucille Ball.

Well, I'm kinda surprised no one's mentioned it yet...
Ok, so I'll be that guy:

Missed this post somehow. Yes. Bicycle Thief is a must see Classic. Very heartwarming. But I really love  the Rastafarian remake Rockers. I first saw it at a movie house, the Ken,  in San Diego that shows everything from Solaris to Pink Flamingos

So glad to hear the Ken is still going!  My semi-hipster friends and I would go there back in the day, to catch all the offbeat movies.  Later on the beach we'd stick out as the film geeks discussing Fellini and Kurosawa.

Pacific Beach, right? Do you remember the petite dark blonde who came over and started geeking out about her love of Samurai movies?

Sounds a bit like The Innocents with Deborah Kerr though the parents were dead in that film.  Their uncle was responsible for them and he did not care for them.  That is why he hired the governess played by Deborah Kerr.  Here's a synopsis.

In Victorian England, the uncle of orphaned niece Flora and nephew Miles hires Miss Giddens as governess to raise the children at his estate with total independence and authority. Soon after her arrival, Miss Giddens comes to believe that the spirits of the former governess Miss Jessel and valet Peter Quint are possessing the children. Miss Giddens decides to help the children to face and exorcise the spirits.

Some of that could fit, but I think the setting for the movie was about the same time it was filmed.  I'm pretty sure there were automobiles and radios in the film, so the Victorian setting doesn't fit.  Thanks for trying, this has been bugging me for some time.

Great movie with one of my favorite actresses of the period, Ruth Hussey.  Again, similar theme, but not the film I saw.

Thanks TL!

Welcome, Uncle D. I'm very curious to know what the movie is. I'm a Ruth Hussey fan too. Almost always the supporting actress.  Always the bridesmaid never the bride. Like Celeste Holm

I watched 12 Angry Men from the 1950's, and I haven't watched it since law class in high school .  It's so simple (all in one room) but so good. Enjoyed back then and enjoyed it now.

I viewed a beautiful classic the other day.  It was quite a change from "The Great Escape" or Clint riding the high plains.  The settings and filming are gorgeous and perfectly staged.  A film of innocence, purity, ideals, and, yes, not just for children.  I hadn't viewed it since I was a child. A timeless classic which deserves to be shown much more frequently and is still very worthy of the big screen.  Disney's "Pollyanna" is one of the films which, for me, was emblematic of Walt's live productions.

Haley Mills is perfect as Pollyanna.  A brilliant natural as a child actor, without the usual stilted, over-acting present in so many other young performers.  It's interesting to view the movie now and note some actresses which became better known in the '60s with two popular TV shows, "Green Acres" and "Bewitched."  You'll recognize them as soon as they appear.

Remember when Sunday night had the wonderful Disney shows?  Relive those days with this wonderful film.

Oh heck yes!  I haven't watched that in decades.  It's time again.

Svengoolie hosting "Night Monster" (1942) tonight. But there is also baseball, pre-season FB, Olympics, and SIT with Art interviewing Stan Deyo circa 7/24/96  so not sure.....

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035124/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

for TL TCM's Olivia de Havilland's month is continuing tonight.

ps: for all TCM has an app in which you can choose between both East and West coast feeds and also has on-demand movies. I haven't played around with it much yet so can't say how good it is. You will need to login in with your provider so I'm not sure if it will work when you are not on WiFi.
