Dayton, Ohio: Surf Capital of the World

I guess they didn't want to surf in the Cuyahoga River...

Russians reportedly shot down a fighter accidently during dog fighting training a few days ago, apparently after being hit by cannon fire from another fighter unintentionally with live ammo.

Using the a/c as an ejection seat test bed.  The seat shown on the slide being ejected is a Russian K-36.  The fighter forebody on the tail of the TU-154 is probably not an F-5, more likely it's one of the "indigenous" fighters Iran developed based on the F-5.  If the Iranians put a K-36 in that a/c, the cockpit must have been redesigned/enlarged.  No way you could integrate the very large K-36 into the small F-5 cockpit.

I thought the indigenous fighters were smaller versions of the F-5? Pic sort of related - it's the cockpit of their 'stealth plane'.

I've been thinking of trying the Yakuza games. Looks like they might be weird fun.

Down there are liquor stores etc deemed "essential?" Here they are. Apparently reasoning -besides deep pockets from the industry and political connections- is that public health might be worsened if folks can't get booze, wine, and beer. And that the natives might get even more restless.

Yes, with the same reasoning. It was unclear for the first lockdown, so there was a run on alcohol until the government clarified. First lockdown most stores were still open (home improvement, clothing, hobby, etc) but this time it's only healthcare, supermarkets, bottle shops/butchers/grocers, and restaurants/cafes if they're takeaway/delivery only (pubs and bars are closed).

There were protests today against the lockdowns, with the riot and mounted police being sent in and resulting in arrests. The state government is meant to be releasing their 'roadmap out' tomorrow, so the shit might hit the fan even more.

It's a function of distance and runways at his destination.

I guess that makes sense. I thought there might've been some kind of political/legal reason eg Airforce One (the 747s) can't be used for political campaigning. Also saw that Biden has been using a Gulfstream.

When the US Interstate Highway System was initiated in the mid/late 50s, there were originally specifications as to the height of signs within x number of feet from the edges of the road.  These dimensions corresponded with the ground clearance and wingspan of KC-135 tankers.  The idea was, in the event of all out war, the tankers would give SAC bombers all but a few minutes flying time's fuel and the tankers would land on whatever stretch of highway available.
I feel like that would be a messy landing for a KC-135 even with the signs set up like that. We've got stretches of remote highway that are deliberately wider and equipped with airstrip markings (eg piano keys) to allow air ambulances to use them, but they're PC-12/King Air sized.

I've been wondering, is there a reason why Trump isn't using Airforce One for his political rallies? Everytime I see any footage of them, it looks like he's standing in front of some kind of twin jet (maybe a militarised 757?).

Still, I'll be honest--if it came down to a choice between an all-night Battlefield: Earth watchparty and a Clinton "presidency," well... I'd have to sit right down on the spot and think it over. Can't I just read the book instead? Or just beat me about the head and shoulders with it. I'm game.

An all-night viewing party lasts just the night; a Clinton presidency would last at least 4 years with endless options for renewal.

This is week 3 of a 6 week 'hard lockdown' (plus 3 weeks before that of a softer lockdown) where you're not allowed to travel more than 5km from home, can only exercise for an hour a day, are required to wear masks whenever you leave home (which is being enforced by the police), most shops are closed and food outlets are takeaway only, only one person can do shopping at a time, state and international borders are effectively closed to everyone, and there's a curfew between 8pm and 5am.

As if that alone wasn't bad enough, the drinking water for a large area (ie 88 suburbs) was contaminated because of storms last night.

A leaked government report came out yesterday saying they were going to extend basically all of the restrictions past the previously announced end date of Sep 13 with very minor changes. The government's reaction was only stating that it was an out of date report, but they didn't deny that's what's going to happen or say what actually will happen.
It feels like there's a very real chance of riots and civil disobedience if they do extend them without major easing of restrictions on that date.

Coronavirus in South Africa: Scientists explore surprise theory for low death rate
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-53998374

So this was a pretty unremarkable article until I got to the bottom and saw this:
QuoteUpdate: The headline and article have been amended to better reflect what the scientists said. It was not our intention to cause offence.

Curious to find out what it was, I found this article discussing what it had been:
Too Poor to Die? BBC Africa Report Causes Uproar
https://www.kenyans.co.ke/news/57026-too-poor-die-bbc-africa-report-causes-uproar

Really wish there were some kind of way to track changes on the Beeb like there is for the NYT.

It's a bit hard going back to console shooters without things like crouch or dual stick controls, but this game is a classic.

QuoteUpon approach of a train, a giant neon sign lit up with the words "Stop-DEATH-Stop" beneath a lighted skull and crossbones. Flashing neon arrows indicated the direction of oncoming trains and an air raid siren in lieu of bells provided aural warning.

CIA declassifies Project Aquiline
QuoteThe U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has declassified its Project Aquiline on Jul. 30. The secretive program from the late 1960s was to build a bird-like unmanned air vehicle that can collect photographic and electronic intelligence plus emplacing sensors in denied environments.

Prime contractor was McDonnell Douglas and the vehicle’s dimensions are 5ft length with a wing span of 7.5ft. Powered by a silent engine with 3 1/3 horsepower, the mechanical bird has an endurance of at least 50 hours and a range of 1200 miles. It was proposed in the research study to add a radioisotope engine for it to stay airborne for up to 30 days or 36 000 miles range.
