Flashback to the 1990's and US Videotel

Up All Night

I remember communicating with my all-in-one terminal/keyboard/modem. The US Videotel. You opened it up and the monochrome 9" monitor was there and the keyboard just folded down (no mouse). I got it at a kiosk at the Mall in the early 90's. Maybe $75.

There were message boards, and there were chat rooms (and *private* chat rooms !!!)

I know they were huge in France (at least their version of it) up until about the mid 90s. Apparently, almost everyone there had one of these terminals you would use to log onto a mainframe.

Did the data ride on the video blanking interval of TV broadcasts like the French version?

ISTR there were too many other things the VBI was being used for by then by stations in N. Amer. for the Teletex to work as in France.  You used to be able to adjust the vertical hold to scroll up the frame bar and it'd be still with just a little test space in the middle to calibrate on, but later a profusion of dancing snow appeared on it.
