Need I draw you a picture?

No offense, but yes.  You make some outrageous claims.  To take them at face value is foolish.  How about posting some screen shots of these facebook PMs or emails.  If you're as desperate to have people believe you as you seem then this is a quick easy way to build credibility.  Black out names or other personal information and show us some actual evidence that you have any contacts at all.  It should take 10 minutes to do tops.  If you can do that I might think you actually are on to something.  Till then my opinion is you should take down your fake facebook page.

Again, I mean no offense.  I'm just not easily convinced by anonymous postings on the internet.  I would be excited to find out in a few weeks that you aren't full of it.  I won't harp on the topic further and will wait out your predictions.

This site is used by Airyn only to keep track of her extended clan of Philippino friends, and especially those female Philippinas who have married, or about to marry older American men. NO HUSBANDS OR BOYFRIENDS are allowed on the site, not even Art.

How would you even know this?  Not that I'm interested in the least in her personal life but every post you make erodes your credibility further.

nancy grace is a fear mongering CUNT.  i hate her and wish she would be struck by a decommissioned satellite plummeting to the earth.  if you can watch the following video without agreeing, then you've been feasting on lead based paint chips for the last 35 years.  she's just atrocious.

The level of my agreement cannot be expressed.  At my work we have tv's in all the patient waiting areas and the ONLY channel they will show is HLN.  What a worthless channel with douche bag hosts.  Not a day goes by where I don't swear at several tv's.  The sad part is she only exists because people will watch her which lowers my outlook on the human species every time I think about it.

For all the love Art Bell and the old CTC show gets around here there's not much actual discussion that goes on about it.  I just had to break out the calculator and figure a few things.  For the 3 CTC board sections here HALF of the posts are in GN sucks and Art Bell Quits Coast.  If you wanted to add in all the odds and ends threads about GN sucking I bet 75% of the boards are wrapped up in 2 topics.  I think CoastGab would die if GN were fired and Art returned.   :D

I never thought of it that way much : / you may be right, but most people who I've read about or known that believe in human life-after-death, also believe that animals go, too.  There have been "EVP"s of barking dogs, etc.

I've heard that too but where does it stop?  What about rats, fish, insects, trees, grass, and single cell organisms?  There's usually a line drawn somewhere on an individual basis.  Coincidentally that line usually lands where that individual cuts off a psychological connection with living things and sees them just as objects.

I'll be clear, i'm not trying to convert anyone away from their beliefs.  That's just my response to that idea.  I'd be delighted if everything I thought was wrong.  Plus I can't imagine trying to care for every pet I've ever had all at the same time.   :P

I think most of the people in the video are probably sincere. Sincerity does not equal evidence and certainly does not mean proof.

I would agree with both points there.  I think these things speak more to the power of the human mind than to any evidence of an afterlife or ghosts.  The thing about most people (I hate to generalize like this but I really see this as a truth in this case) is they believe that humans are somehow seprate from the rest of nature.  Because we are the top dog, looking down on the food chain, doesn't mean we must be able to avoid the fate of every other living thing on the planet.

To me the mainstream acceptance of things like ghosts, hauntings, EVPs, and other phenomena of the sort is just a manifestation of our inability to accept the laws of nature which take place right in front of our eyes every day.

I'll admit to sometimes being envious of those who believe.  I think having that comfort must help, but I can't undo my line of reasoning.

...DISGUTIPATING !! "

This is just further proof that JC is a fake.  That word, to my knowledge and reinforced by some google searches, is completely made up by the band Tool.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disgustipated

If JC were for real he'd call Tool the mouthpiece of the devil or some horseshit and would never associate himself with them.

Editing this post here to add a further connection that I took for granted as common knowledge, just in case it's not.  On the band's album Lateralus they used a clip of the famous frantic Area 51 caller that Art Bell had in the final track, Faaip de Oiad, to great effect.  The result is eerie and strange.  I'm sure the people who run CTC (of which JC is part of in my opinion) are well aware of this and possibly are fans of their music.  There's certainly many listeners aware of this song at least.  This all sounds a bit too conspiritorial for my tastes but I doubt many of you need convincing that JC is fake.  My point is only that Tool and CTC have a pre-existing connection that can explain the use of Disgustipated.

On a side note, the fact this clip was used is a testiment to the greatness of the old Art Bell show.  It's very out of character for Tool to use clips or samples of anything not of their own creation.  In fact I can't think of a single other example.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lateralus#Track_listing

Edit number 3 here!  I need to work on finishing thoughts before posting.  I wanted to comment on that specific Area 51 caller.  This was the situation where some guy called up Art in a total panic trying to explain what was going on at Area 51 with some impending doom situation while worrying about government agents triangulating in on his position, or something to that effect.  The guy was cut off and Art's feed was knocked off the air for a half hour or so.  A few years later a guy called in and fessed up to making that call and it being a hoax.  Even if that is true the coincidence that Art was knocked off the air isn't explained.  No matter the reason for it all this single situation and caller summed up the greatness of Art Bell in the late 90's and proves how compelling a simple home-made radio show can be.

How ironic that, in my own mind at least, this was connected to JC.  JC these days to me is the antithesis of what CTC used to be.  He's so worn out and transparently false that it's not even fun anymore.

I hate the Harry Potter drek.

Kinda like the Harry Dresden Files books and thought the tv show was ok. Other than that Good Scifi/fantasy stuff keeps me entertained.

I've heard good things about the Dresden books.  Glen Cook, the author I mentioned, actually has a blurb quote on the front of the first Dresden book.  It's not really in Cook's character to promote things like that, even his own work, so that says something right there.  I'm with you on the Harry Potter stuff.  As far as I'm concerened it's a stain on the genre since so many people consider this childrens book a great work of fantasy fiction.  Even Lord of the Rings I wouldn't consider very good.  From a historical aspect it is ground breaking and vital.  Taken out of that context and compared to other books, just as a book, it's not that good.  Certainly not the be all end all of fantasy fiction that its reputation has.

Archive of Old Threads / Your Favorite Fiction
March 06, 2011, 12:22:12 PM
I wanted to start a thread for people to share their favorite authors, books, and genres of fiction.  Reading fiction is one of those things I wish I did more often.  Finding reccomendations to try out is a way to get back into it maybe.

I'll start by saying that I enjoy fantasy and a little bit of sci-fi for the most part.  I got started on the genre in high school by reading Tolkien and it has went from there.  Since then I've gotten tired of Lord of the Rings and all of it's derivatives that saturate the fantasy fiction section.  I still enjoy the good vs. evil, good wins, happy ending books from time to time but now prefer something more off the beaten path.  My favorite series would be the Black Company books by Glen Cook.  If you like a down and dirty realistic take on fantasy this is the one for you.  Realistic fantasy sounds like an oxymoron but I'm not sure how else to describe it.

There's also a lot of classic fiction I've been meaning to get around to reading someday.  I've never read 1984 and that's next on my list for old classics.

What are your favorites?

What I love about the people that CG attracts is that while we do discuss people, we do much more than that. Given the general population of web-forum posters, I'm impressed by the intelligence and thoughtfulness of our crowd.

This is true.  There's a nice mix of discussion that goes on here.  Just to clarify my post, I don't mean to say that anyone using sites like Facebook are small minded dumb people.  I think small talk about people and ourselves is a normal piece of human life that everyone does.  My problem with social networks is they are designed around these kinds of things and thus mostly contain chit chat of no real substance.  The amount of attention Facebook and Twitter get here in the US goes way beyond the value of their content and what they contribute to our society and culture.  I believe most people are capable of more intelligent thoughts, these thoughts just don't end up on Facebook and Twitter.

People such as Brian Greene or Michio Kaku walk a very fine line as guests on C2C.  On one hand they enjoy the benefits of a relatively large audience, and on the other, they must stay clear of any paranormal talk.  The consequences for their scientific careers would be disasterous.

Yesterday I looked for and found the first interview that Art did with Greene because of this post.  It was a very good show overall but there was an awkward portion where Art described a paranormal experience of his and Greene attempted to explain it with a non paranormal explanation.  I sensed a strong feeling of agitation from Art.  Immediately following that he went to callers out of frustration I think.  I love the guy but I think he handled it poorly.  Unlike Kaku, Greene didn't seem to hold back his opinions much on the paranormal and unexplained.  Kaku has more of a kids glove approach and won't discuss it.  Maybe Art wasn't expecting to be dismissed like that.

I usually suggest that, if it is not an emergency, wait at least 3 hours before responding to any email.  Think about it first, mull over a thoughtful response.  Snail mail used to force deliberation, as one has to prepare pen and paper, write your message, put it in an envelope and walk to the mailbox, and perhaps wait a day before it was picked up, and 2 to 3 days before delivery.

One of the biggest banes to human existence right now are Social Networks.  What a complete waste of time.  People need a lot more "listening to C2C [or any media] on hot summer nights with just a book, or outside with my telescope, or just lying in my dark bedroom" - actual thinking and mental self-discovery perpetuating the growth of a strong individual personality.

I couldn't agree more with your two points here.  I even try to apply that wait period to forum posting, especially when getting into heated topics full of emotion.  Sometimes impulse overrides and I almost always regret a comment or two later on.  That's just my personality though, some people are calm and collected enough to not feel this way.

As for social networks I can't stand them.  They encourage narcissistic behavior in a society that is all too self important already.  There's certainly good sides to sites like Facebook but overall I think it's a waste of time.  There's enough posturing, attention seeking, self absorbed people I meet every day in person.  Twitter is the ultimate manifestation of narcissism in my opinion.

Edited to add this since I love the quote and I think it applies here:

"Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people." - Eleanor Roosevelt

Social networks are mostly full of people discussing people.

Thanks, Silent,

I'm downloading them one each night, painfully slowly, since the "download all" feature is only available to Premium Members ($6.50/mo) and I am sooooo cheap.

Cheers,

Anagrammy

You're welcome.  There's no rush I don't think.  As long as the files get some use I think the site leaves them alone.  I wouldn't pay for it either unless you wanted to do something more with the site.  As unpopular as the idea is around here you're better off spending $7 a month for streamlink and you could download or stream to your hearts content.

I posted this link somewhere else in the forums a few weeks back but it has been lost in the shuffle I think.  Either that or no one wants to listen to Art Bell!  Anyway, there's a good collection of shows available here http://www.4shared.com/account/dir/wB5Z2GOm/sharing.html?&

They're all free of commercials so George Noory won't be butting in on your listening.  I'm not trying to get the attention of Premiere so I won't be spamming the link any more.  I wanted to try one more time since if the files don't get used they are deleted by the website after 6 months I think.

He gets mentioned often in discussions of favorite guests that's for sure.  I recently revisited one of those interviews and was not impressed.  I remember hearing him back in the 90's and being facinated by stories of possession but I guess I've changed since then.  I imagine finding those shows wouldn't be too hard with some google searches.  That CD was called Perfect Possession if that helps.

This is pretty sweet Mr. V.  One of my favorite bumper tunes was always The Highwayman, w/Wille, Waylon, and the boys.  Check out this vid.  Are these guys probably really high or what?

I've loved that song ever since I first heard Art play it.  I'm no huge fan of country western music but that song is just cool.  Art's interview with Willie Nelson is also one of my favorite shows he ever did.

Maybe some good news for Firefly fans also.

I havn't listened to it yet but at least you're out there doing something you like.  I assume that at least, you wouldn't do this unless podcasting and UFOlogy interested you.  Most people would talk about doing those things but never follow through.  Congrats on that and you even got a guest with a name we've heard before.  Ambition is the biggest key to success so you've gotten that far.  I wouldn't let the negative reception here get you down.

From what I've read over there they seem to think along the lines of the Coastgab crowd.  Maybe I missed the Noory love thread though.  With the interpretation of his post I thought the same thing when I first read it but I've never thought of Art as the type to side step something uncomfortable like that.  He's pretty much just said what's on his mind from my experience.  Good news about him possibly returning to the desert at least.   :D  If he's not feeling the radio itch right now I bet he will if he returns to the US.

I'm no expert on doing that but here's what I would try.  Find a cassette player with an audio out jack and run that into the audio in jack on your sound card.  Download and install Audacity.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Audacity should let you record any audio coming through your PC, or you may even be able to have it just record the audio in jack.  You can then save it as an MP3.  I just started using that program a few months ago so I'm no expert with it but it seems very nice once you figure out the basics.  Maybe someone else can suggest an easier method for you.  Good luck and let us know what you end up trying.  I have some cassettes back home I'd like to someday put on my PC.
