Mine are nesting right now in the neighbor's cactus bush which is very defensible from hawks and roadrunners so I haven't seen any of the females for a while. As evidence to support the fact that smallpox was not a European disease, no Roman chronicle of the western European colonial era ever mentions the disease, which they would certainly have if it had indeed been present.

That most certainly was the case and with the fall of Constantinople in 1453 it greatly accelerated the spread of the disease. Incidentally the fall of Constantinople was the impetus for Christopher Columbus to journey west which inadvertently spread the disease to America. More indigenous people died from smallpox than any other reason and the blame can be laid squarely at the feet of muslim invaders.
