The "Skeptoid" podcast with Brian Dunning is pretty interesting.  If you've ever wanted someone to make a counter argument to all the nonsensical claims and assertions that guests frequently make on Coast, then the Skeptoid podcast is here to save your brain.  My only problem with Dunning is that he sometimes labels "believers" as "whackos" which seems like an unnecessary personal attack.  He makes his points very well.  No need to beat anyone up.

If you're open to reasoned and thoughtful commentary, give the "Skeptoid' a listen.

This is pretty amazing.  Someone who stridently argues from a place of logic and reason.  But then he does THIS?  Is he really so analytical and reasoned?  Or is he a little too pleased with himself?

He has someone in place to take over Skeptoid while he's "away".  And the replacement guy is a tad bit less condescending which is a definite improvement.

I'd love to listen to a show where somebody respectfully challenged some of these frauds but most of these skeptics come off as such pompous douches that you end up defending the kooks

I guess everything recycles.  Just under 20-years ago, there was a Satanic Cult Abusing Children panic in the US.  It was fueled in part by Oprah.  It led to prosecution of innocent people and the destruction of their lives.  There was the McMartin trial in California http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMartin_preschool_trial, and the Little Rascals trial in North Carolina http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Rascals_day_care_sexual_abuse_trial
Janet Reno, as state attorney before she was US Attorney General, perfected what PBS Frontline called The Miami Method of Prosecuting Child Abuse Cases.

Please, let's don't go down this trail again.

I see some parallels between alien abduction and the great satan panic. They both play in the same fears.

WA had its own version of this the Wenatchee 7 or something. It wasn't a daycare, but a group of people in an obscure church and a guy named Bob Perez  ( now deceased) who went after them. They turned out to be innocent. I think Dorothy Rabinowitz of the Wall Street Journal wrote about this one. some people still maintain that the Satanic Ritual Abuse stuff is true, and you get glimpses,of it now and then.

I just looked up the Wenatchee case on Wikipedia. It was even worse than I remembered.Definitely a case of a group of people who were at a socioeconomic disadvantage. This may be when a corner was turned. People realized how excessive this sort of thing had gotten, and common sense returned.

When people attack Ad Hominem is means they are having trouble winning an argument or convincing themselves. It is also just impolite and mean.

Free thinking should be encouraged. People challenging conventional ideas should not be ridiculed for it. That is bullying people into conforming.
