This breakdown of healthcare costs from the insurance industry, AHIP, is revealing. The administrative costs do seem excessive, in addition to the executive bonuses the industry doles out too.

But most surprising to me is the 22.1 cents--nearly one quarter of every dollar spent--going to pharmaceuticals! This is outrageous! I know for many people certain medications are a necessity, but I think too many drugs are over-prescribed, and even unnecessary. Patients come in to the hospital with large bags and boxes of prescription meds they've been prescribed by various doctors, often not even knowing what they're taking or why. Under the new plan (whatever the hell it is), I'd support patient care managers/navigators/advocates to sort this prescription drug mess out. We certainly can't expect the pharmaceutical industry to do what's best for the patient.

It seems that every time I'm in the waiting room prior to a scheduled visit with my primary care physician, there is a procession of well dressed and good looking young people carrying some kind of Coach briefcase or satchel that go in and out.  They seem to know all the nurses and admin people by their first name and often bring a box of donuts, bagels or some kind of pastry for the staff.  I know they are drug company reps who are there to promote their line and to leave samples but their easy access to doctors and the collegial relationship with nurses and other caregivers they seem to enjoy tends to annoy those of us still waiting to see the Doc 45 minutes after our appointment time.

It seems that the cozy relationship between MD's and drug companies is likely a major factor in the over prescription of drugs.  What can be done about that?

This is the first editorial I've seen suggesting, more or less, what I've been thinking:

Hypothesize for a moment that the "scandal" here is real, but in a limited sense: Trump's surrogates have not colluded with Russians, but have had “contacts,” and recognize their political liability, and lie about them. Investigators then leak the true details of these contacts, leaving the wild speculations to the media and the Internet. Trump is enough of a pig and a menace that it's easy to imagine doing this and not feeling terribly sorry that your leaks have been over-interpreted.
