Messages - awake

Do you hold the exclusive trademark on awake?  I don't see a TM anywere.

Thank you; of course you are correct.  And as I stated in my original post "I don't "own" the name Awake of course but it is something I use often.  ".
I was requesting a favor of a sort from MV.  I'd been a member for a few years and thought it not much of an inconvenience.  It isn't something owed to me in any way.  If MV had done the civil thing, as Onan has, and pointed me to a section of the rules which precludes the deletion of accounts I would have understood.  Rather than do the courtesy of that though MV chose to reply with "later" and then "go fuck yourself".  Those responses are themselves indicative of what this site has become and what I want no part of it.

Onan, Thank you!  I see you as sort of a Sisyphus character endlessly arguing for rationality.  Your posts are excellent and I'm glad you fight the good fight.  I'm just done fighting.  Thank you also for pointing out that the deletion of accounts is against the rules.  I was not aware of that and I'm glad to have that knowledge.  MV, if you read this, I now understand.  If you'd simply pointed me toward that rule rather than being, well....you, I'd have understood.

I now understand that my membership is some sort of lifetime sentence and that is fine.  Thanks again, Onan, for pointing it out.

Bart Ell, good luck with that stand up career.

So to be clear.  I made this request repeatedly to MV using PM.  The response was to "fuck off".  Posting about this topic is about the only option available at this point.  Thank you for the opportunity to clarify, again, that point.

Dear Internet,

Please delete the video of me stepping on the rake, knocking myself out and falling, semi-erect, into my cousin Susan. I know you will understand that I do not want this videos associated with me or my soon to be born second cousin / daughter.

Thanks for understanding.
Thanks for contributing exactly nothing to the topic of the thread.  You're a comedic genius, I have no idea why you are not famous.

I have done exactly as you suggest.  What I am looking to accomplish at this point is simply to have my "Awake" name removed from the members list.

There is no way that I know of to self-delete my account.  If there is such a mechanism I'd love to know about it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I wasn't certain if I'd been clear of what I am asking for and why.  I'm not an active poster any longer and what I am asking to happen is for MV to excise my name from the members list.

Thanks for the question.

When I signed up on this site in 2012 the site was about C2C.  While politics was part of the discussion it wasn't a part of every discussion .  The number of wingnuts and moonbats were about equal and they not pervade all areas of the site.

All that has changed and this site is now largely, in my opinion, a right-wing echo chamber of nonsense in each and every thread.  I want no part of it and asked MV to remove my account.  I use the awake moniker on other sites and I simply don't want it here any longer so I asked MV to delete my account.  I think I was polite about it and I don't think it would take more than a few minutes of his time but so far I've been rudely rebuffed.
One receipt of my first request his response was "later".
I sent another note attempting to again ask to simply have my account deleted and the reply from MV was "go fuck yourself".

So what does it take to disassociate ones self from a site that was once enjoyable but has since metastasized into something you find repellent?

I could make enough rude posts to get myself banned but then I'd be a part of the problem.  So I'm asking, how do I get my account name off of the roles here?  It's such a small request that I'm baffled by MV's rudeness.  I don't "own" the name Awake of course but it is something I use often.

I don't know if what I'm requesting is some kind of internet faux pas or if I've broken some other taboo but this seems like maybe three mouse clicks and done.  I hope I guess that MV is embarrassed enough by this post to grant my request.  I supposed his other option would be to delete my post and then I'll have choice but to get banned purposely but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.

Politics / Re: The ***new*** atheist.

Quote from: wotr1 on June 30, 2014, 04:07:10 AM
Recently I have run across two "extreme" atheists.  These would be the people who are the equivalent of door-knocking Mormons.  The problem is that they are both dumb as a sack of hammers.

It seems that until a few years ago most atheists I met were intelligent and articulate... they were bucking a trend and knew why.  However, there are more and more people moving from a "weak" religion or "undecided" to full blown atheist (not just agnostic.)

I suppose as "non-religion" grows it will become a trend.  The really funny thing is that for so long people would mock the religious as sheep, followers, and as those who are unable to think for themselves.  Now, let's face facts- many people were exactly those things.  To go against the trend required some degree of intelligence and thought whereas to follow the trend was easy.

With religion on the decline and atheism on an upswing I think we are bound to see more and more people who I described in the first paragraph.  Unthinking and (in some cases) stupid people who are following what they were told.  They see somebody intelligent and well spoken lash out against religion (think Dawkins, Hitchens, Randi or even George Carlin) and believe that they should do the same.  The problem is that they do not have the charisma nor intelligence to carry it off.  They come across as an embarrassment to their non-theism.  They are the atheists answer to the Southern Baptist church of Fred Phelps.

I have a friend who is keen to point out that half of the population is below average intelligence.  These people have to fall under some banner when it comes to belief.  In the distant past atheism was almost exclusively reserved for those who were damn intelligent and sought it out.  Next came universities.  Fortunately most students are above average intelligence (despite my observing that a large number of them are "book smart" but dumb in "real life.")  However, with mass media, youtube and television I would argue that the message is reaching people from all walks of life, experiences and levels of intelligence.  It is reaching those who ponder the words carefully and accept or reject them.  It also reaches those lacking the ability of intelligent thought.

Anyhow, I suppose I am just posting these ramblings because those who are intelligent and push against religion should be careful what they wish for...  It will not be long before those who are religious will be able to laugh and make mention of the black pot and kettle when an atheist accuses them of being sheep...

***As a disclaimer, I am not saying that all (or even the majority) of atheists are stupid nor unthinking.  To the contrary; I believe that at this moment in time those who denounce religion are likely, on average, more intelligent than the average Christian or Muslim.  However, things are-a-changin'.  ;)

I cannot decide if your logical fallacy is the anecdotal fallacy (You used a personal experience or an isolated example instead of a sound argument or compelling evidence) or the argument from personal experience which also comes from the use of anecdotal experience.

Are you truly shocked that some atheists are less informed than others?

Really?

What was your true purpose in starting this thread?

I'm completely baffled by this.  MV was harassed by this person even after he was kicked.  So MV rewards this behavior by bringing the guy back.  Fuck this shit, last straw.

I am embarrassed to have invested so much energy, excitement, and belief that Art would easily sail past c2c.

I am relieved it is over.

this exactly.

I wish art well in whatever he ends up doing but I will not be coming along for the ride next time.

Thanks! Anyone actually seen it yet? Curious if worth it.
I watched Willow Creek.  It's another of the "found footage" faux documentaries popular awhile back.  I have zero belief in bigfoot and was expecting an actual documentary so I had to mentally re-adjust when I realized what I was watching.  Having said that, I thought the movie was entertaining and well made.  But please don't be confused, it's not a documentary.

Jackstar, you need to be site banned.  How many here like this guy's posts, anyone, someone?

Completely agree.  The asshat attempts to hijack every thread with his/her particular brand of bullshit.  I finally reported him yesterday and have my fingers crossed that some action is taken.

The JBW interview on Red Ice was good. He explains a lot more coherently his ideas and experience with C2C and corporate radio. He mentioning working for the CIA then.

So he was more coherent with someone interviewing him than he has been when speaking for himself on his own show?

Love the foreboding organ notes being played with the video.  Hilarious shit.  Thanks for sharing, these wackadoo's are so fun.

Dave better hurry up with that Hawaii studio, he might be living there soon.

Looks bad, but this rancher doesn't want to pay $1 an acre (or less) to graze his cattle is probably going to lose. Other ranchers are willing to pay the $1 an acre and he is screwing them over.

^^ This is right.  I've lived in Vegas for 40+ years and ranching interests up North get a sweet deal from the state.  We in Vegas basically subsidize most of the infrastructure of the Northern ranchers and I'm a bit offended that this guy feels entitled to not even kick in the very low grazing fees.  Oh and by the way, cattle mess up the desert and contribute quite a lot to the dust storms we get by breaking the desert crust with their hooves, so thanks for that too buddy.

There's a truly creepy far-rightist undercurrent in here and in this whole High Strangeness scene, and the minute anyone (like Ventura) strays from it, the flag comes out, Kate Smith starts singing, and it's knee-jerk "Thanks for your service" time. I bet half of you are still pissed off about Jane Fonda, let alone the South losing the US Civil War.

Ventura should come out for a monument in D.C. for Vietnam draft dodgers and deserters just to give you that final brain aneurysm.

Yes yes yes.  And creepy is absolutely the correct descriptor.

I know Ventura says this but is there any reliable third party data which backs up his claims?

Honestly, probably habit.  After Art came back and I heard him interview that same people who had been on c2c, I knew I would never again listen to the nooron's pale imitation.  So, this place is habit and I hold out a small hope that dave will be fired or immolate himself in a pizza roll incident.  Without bellgab, I would never know when it was safe to go back into the c2c waters.

I think its pretty obvious the pilot downed the plane in an act of protest. Seems like the most logical explanation to me.
I don't really agree with the idea that it crashed but I watched three newscasts last week which mentioned that the plane rose above it's ceiling height and then dove very low more than once.  The scenario which plays out easiest is a struggle in-which the flight controls are whacked.  I can also imagine the plane dropping low to avoid military radars?  I tend to think that with the amount of time and interest wreckage would have been found on a sat image or floating about.  I think this plane will be used for future skulduggery.

Great episode!  Very evenhanded treatment given to that YEC goofball.  Do you find it difficult to keep the ad hominem out of your shows?  I know I couldn't do it.

I'm sorry you are puzzled.  The fact I didn't listen to the show in question is exactly why I asked bsb to provide additional information.  He/she was kind enough to do so, and I read that response fully and carefully, and gave it due consideration.  I thanked bsb for the response, and respectfully stated an informed opinion based on that response.  In this case that opinion happened to be contrary that of bsb, but ironically is one that you and the vast majority of posters to this specific thread seemed to echo.  So we agree, saying "George Noory isn't going anywhere" does not add to any conversation.
I was referring to Juan.  Juan, not you.  But I'm still sorry if you took offense.

Might I put a counter-question to those slightly self-righteously proclaiming that they are on the Noory wagon?
Why are you still regularly reading - and posting at - this thread? It seems a little illogical to come among a GNS! thread with your nose in the air muttering 'George Noory? Pshaw. Never listen to him myself'
Not wanting to pick a fight. This is said with a smile and the tongue in the cheek ;) but it does seem a little odd.
No fight.  Is it any more odd than those who listen nightly while simultaneously posting about the stupidity the shows guests and host?

There are many other threads on the site other and it is fun to pop in to read the reactions to dave's nightly fuck-ups.

bsbishop is referring pretty specifically to the Paulides interview and to discount his/her opinion while also stating you didn't listen to the show is puzzling.  The thing about that particular show was how it differed from the standard dave fare.  That's the whole point, it sounded out of character which makes bs wonder if PRN is sending down some fix it or else kind of directives.  It's fine to have an uniformed opinion but it doesn't add to the conversation.  Who knows if this was the only instance of attempting improve the show (assuming it is happening), perhaps the company has tried other things that didn't smack as quite this artificial?

I agree that is is highly unlikely that prn is going to fire the jackass but they cannot be pleased with the show.  I assume that at least someone from the company has heard the show and dave's neat trick of asking questions that have already been answered.

The thing that galls me is that dave has this cushy gig and I imagine is well paid, but puts so little effort into, and shows so little regard for, his work.  I find his lack of professionalism disrespectful to the listeners, his bosses, his co-workers and himself.  He mentioned on this site that he fades out during interviews, but that's his fucking job.  Sweet jesus, how tough can it be to find a another interviewer who would show up prepared and engaged???

If you haven't tried the mysterious universe podcast I'd suggest it.  The two hosts bring a much less spiritual/religious perspective to all topics.  They read the books of the people they interview and get top shelf guests.  Don't get me wrong, they are still "woooooo" oriented but they also laugh at some of the crazier claims (black eyed children) and I find them a much better alternative.  Also, the show has had more than ten seasons so it is very polished.  Hope it provides enjoyment.

My understanding is that the bible makes numerous mentions that jebus was crucified to atone for original sin (Mark 10:45,Matt 26:28,Luke 24:27,Corinthians 15:22,Romans 5:12-21, etc.).  So to accept original sin one must accept at least one of the two, contradictory, genesis myths as literal truth.  That means they are ready to accept a&e as literal beings and original sin as a real event to so that atonement can occur.  Cafeteria christians claim allegory when explaining genesis but doing so removes any original sin motivation for jebus' atonement, or they simply ignore verses that do not fit their version of christianity.  I've not seen anyone suggest that a literal atonement was performed to forgive an allegorical original sin but.....

Acceptance of a literal genesis to provide a purpose to jebus is likewise a problem for dealing with issues like DNA mutation, light speed, the observable universe and the geologic record.

So beating on atheists is fun but forgive me if I do not want to be subjected to the delusions of men created out of clay, women from bone, walking and talking serpents, and a creator who punishes his creations for behaving as designed.
