If he keeps this up, I'm gonna have to take back some of the nice things I said about him.

Phone calls from the dead.

What is the Epoch Times, anyway? I used to see it in downtown Seattle, and assumed it was something published by a religious cult. But maybe not.

Did somebody say "it's a kitty" just before the Carnivora commercial, or did I imagine it? Or is it something on KIRO?

BattyBrooke

Open lines caller, Anne from Tried Cities is definitely shitfaced.

Phone calls from the dead....

I would love to ask if they ever call collect.  "Hi Bob, this is Ted, remember that 100 bucks you still owe me, well you're gonna pay, it's a long way from where I'm calling, bud."

The dead in my life used to call collect all the time, and while I was always happy to hear from them, the phone bills were brutal.  But now we Skype and it doesn't cost a cent, so problem solved!

Thanks!  The best part is seeing how great Nana looks.  The afterlife certainly seems to be agreeing with her!

An aging Hall of Fame pitcher took a call from his old road roomie the other day. He was a Hall of Famer himself, but was the multiple World Series winners catcher. The pitcher was surprised to get that call.

Very surprised indeed. You see, the catcher had fallen from the 12th floor of a landmark hotel the night that their numbers had been retired. Seems the catcher was pulling the old, I'll use the outside window ledge instead of the hallway to get more bourbon from the shortstop/1st room.

His old friend assured him that that was no prank call. Though he did have both good and bad news for the old pitcher.
The good news? They play ball everyday!
The bad news?? He was scheduled to pitch the next day.

Yes. I usee to see it free around town here too. I recall it is a Falun Gong publication. Which Chinese say is a cult but I dont how cultish they are since its the Chicoms.

All and all.....not a bad program.  I stayed up and listened to the entire broadcast.  Syrett doesn't take these long pauses in the middle of a question like Noory because he ACTUALLY HAS A QUESTION FORMULATED.  Noory makes up simplistic questions (and repeats questions) literally from moment to moment after he's run out of index cards.    Syrett does NOT do that.

I googled it and discovered that it is indeed Falun Gong. Falun Gong has been persecuted by the Chinese government.

I am a little at ease with Richard Syrett.. I sort of love his openings.. he also likes developing a good radio tale but still getting the point, and he KNOWS when the commercial break is coming and remembers what was being talked about before it..

I even got used to his voice, a bit more..

And I sort of giggle when I consider that this is the person talking in an NPR voice in my earbuds in the early morning hours under a supermoon:

Syrret is polished radio talent. I like him. Not crazy about some of the topics he's covered lately

I listened to some of last nights show (half?)  It was not too bad.  The major complaint was when the guest tried to tie in to Lennon's death.  I really hate when people do that (in this case, during a baseball game in Florida that took place at the same time Lennon was shot the crown chanted "block that goal" which was a lyric in one of their songs.  I really hate when people reach like this.  Last time it was a guest with Noory who tied in the fact that something happed on the same day (different year) that the titanic sank.

With all of recorded history and the fact that we braodcast everything, there are bound to be coincidences...

Having said that, it is a minor complaint to most Noory hosted shows and was not even the host...

Just listened to Syrett's recent show with R. Gary Patterson. Skipped the first hour to get to Gary. Really enjoyable interview. I don't mind Syrett's voice at all, and his questions are spot-on. Sure, this topic might be in his wheelhouse, but he did a great job with it.

And yes, I do own Patterson's book "Take A Walk On The Dark Side," which I highly recommend for music fans.

And yes, I enjoyed Patterson's previous interview on Coast with Ian.

My biases aside, this kind of music lore show is a nice break from the drudgery of Noory and the New Age blarg.

I the Syrett run over last weekend felt like it PreRat was doing a covert audition to see how he'd do as a replacement for Snorry. Especially Monday, when he talked to some of the bigger named-regular guests like Paulides, Zimmerman, and finally Streiber. Might explain the different format for the 1st hour.

Disheartened

That wasn't Syrett on Monday. That was Dave Schrader who hosted this past Sunday and Monday.

Yes, Syrett is just fine......but I prefer Schrader.    JUST DUMP NOORY (....and Lisa Garr)!!!

StabWound

I agree with the anti Jorch/Lisa 'Lee Cigar' Garr sentiment wholeheartedly, and if a vote were to go down for a new regular host I would lean toward the Syrett camp; however, as a Canadian myself, my only criticism is that the format of our beloved C2C, which I will tentatively dub 'call-in talk radio for the rugged individualist/tinfoil headwear enthusiast') inherently compliments the intensity and directness unique to Americans.  We have a far more passive approach up north, a certain 'c'est la vie' philosophy that Americans dont share, and in the long run the shows ambience may reflect that too much and become less enjoyable.

I guess I am saying that a show like C2C is best served with that uniquely American swagger, with a nice dessert of 'Sound the Alarm!'

Hey, what about Don Cherry?? No one can accuse him of a "passive approach" or "cest la vie" philosophy. Don't discount your fellow Canadians that much. I, as an American, love Don and his views- including his hockey views. If Syrett could have a little more of that and less of a NPR/CBC pubic radio soft, everything's relative and go-to-sleep, voice he could be a success. Certainly better than Norry.

Sure, but Don Cherry is a schtick.. an act.  We all love him for the his contrast to ordinary Canadians, and the contrast in his suits.  He's like a special treat between periods and when the playoffs start, but we couldn't take much more of him than that.

On my older tube tv I would get some very bizarre squiggles and odd moving pixilation due to his attire. Still like him though. We got a guy who does baseball, forget his name and I don't like him as much, who also screwed with my tv for wearing odd colored pinstrips and seer-suckers suits.

I can't imagine the Technicolor kaleidoscope explosion that was.  It must have been like trying to watch porn on one of those locked out channels when they would just distort or randomize the image somehow.

I agree that Syrett could benefit from being a little more direct from time to time. However, I believe his patience could really serve the suspense of certain shows-- ones where a guest is working toward a point over time. Those types of shows are helped by a host who listens to each point and helps fill in any gaps as the guest goes along, and I think Syrett would be able to do that. The directness comes in when a guest starts to ramble. Art is really good at this: asking a guest if they're getting to the point and keeping them on the path.

Nebraska888

Looks like a good program tonight.......I like Jim Maars.....but, Syrett may have to keep him "on track".  Jim likes to ramble sometimes.

In regards to my earlier criticism and the subsequent replies of my esteemed peers, I think I should clarify that I think Syrett is super great and my naysaying should be scoffed at as internet 'nitpickery' on my part.  I think given a shot at the regular's seat, he would do more good than harm.
Also, Jim Marrs is an awesomely entertaining guest, who appears often on Syrett's TV show (dunno if its aired Stateside) and the 2 of them have complimentary styles, resulting in solidly entertaining discourse for the discerning paranoids pleasure.  Its moments like those that help me forget that it's Saturday night and Im alone with an AM radio.
