remember palm?  they're in big trouble.  the company is dying.  they've been asleep at the switch for years now.  their only hope is their new phone, the pre.  if it fails, palm will too.

the pre is supposed to be released very soon (maybe within 2 weeks).  it is the latest phone to bear the distinction of being a possible iPhone killer.  what sets this phone apart from previous supposed iPhone killers is the fact that this phone actually does have the potential to live up to all of that exciting hype.

i hate apple, i hate the iPhone, and i want to see them destroyed.  i hate the way they do business and i dislike the attitude so many of their oblivious customers have toward the PC.  i almost got off on a tangent there.  anyway... i believe the iPhone to be a substandard product that captured a load of market share merely because the other phones out there are just bad.  that doesn't necessarily make the iPhone god's gift.

palm's pre has me hoping for something to unseat the iPhone as the smartphone benchmark by which all others are measured.

what do you guys think?

My friend has a pirate radio station called KMEAT.  When it's not shooting RF out onto the FM band, its existence continues online.

You can listen to it here for your Muzak pleasure:
http://208.53.158.48:9186/
He just recently added it to Shoutcast, so if you like the music he plays, don't hesitate to spread the word.  I'd like to see his listener count start going up so he can feel like there's a reason to pay for Shoutcast hosting.  I know there are ZILLIONS of Internet radio stations to listen to, but less than 1% are run as professionally as his.

Now, back on topic...

Over the last 12 years I have done a lot of stuff on KMEAT, not the least of which has included production.  Here are some bits of material I have created, laid out for your consumption.  I'm very proud of some of it, and some of it is shit.  You can decide for yourself what is what.

1)A quick liner I produced 11 years ago when I was probably about 18.  I did not use any processing to make my voice this deep.  Instead, I stayed out all night partying and then sneaked into the radio station (a real station where I worked) production room at about 6am.  After hours of marijuana and laughs, my voice sounded great.  Man these were fun times for me.
http://www.ufoship.com/radio_spots/all_night_long.mp3

2)Never trust a baby with a machine gun.  Yeah, ok, whatever.  I'm not sure what I was going for with this one.  Either you'll get it or you won't.  Again, from when I was about 18.
http://www.ufoship.com/radio_spots/babies_with_machine_guns.mp3

3)My name on KMEAT has always been Tom Brokenjaw.  I stole the name from some syndicated morning show who used it in the early 90s.  No, it was way before Opie and Anthony started using the name.
http://www.ufoship.com/radio_spots/brokenjaw_charity.mp3

4)This isn't really production.  I just decided to add it here because I can.  A few years ago, I discovered that at the end of the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon, there are horned instruments playing very faintly in the background.  I believe this is one of those hidden Floyd anomalies most people don't know about.  I was very surprised by this since I'd never heard anybody mention it.  It's a version of Ticket to Ride by The Beatles.  Did you know it was there?
http://www.ufoship.com/radio_spots/dsotm_secret.mp3

5)Again, this isn't my production.  Well, maybe it is.  It's how you interpret the word.  I used to work at a radio affiliate for the Tennessee Titans.  From the day I started at this station, there was a gold record on the wall commemorating our station's involvement with this hideous organization.  I looked through the glass and noticed that the gold record had grooves, meaning there was something printed on it.  I couldn't imagine what it would be.  But it was something.  Months went by, curiosity got the best of me, and I broke into the station late one night to take it home with me, frame and all.  I disassembled it entirely.  Whoever put it together never intended for this to be done.  I knew I would one day have a reason to justify the inclusion of a Technics turntable among my menagerie of audio equipment.  What did I hear when the record started spinning?  I laughed so hard at the effort I'd gone through for this:
http://www.ufoship.com/radio_spots/gold_record.mp3

6)A spot written by my co-worker Bill and voiced by me.  I was 18.  He and I put this together at some point during the work day.  We were a fine use of station resources from a budgetary perspective.
http://www.ufoship.com/radio_spots/happy_fun_ball.mp3

7)If you're a pink floyd fan, you'll understand this one.  If not, go listen to Pink Floyd's The Wall.  I did the voices on this, and even had to use a cymbal from my drums to complete the drum loop.  It's about 4 or 5 years old.
http://www.ufoship.com/radio_spots/if_you_dont.mp3

8)Piss Drink.  A spot I wrote about 9 years ago.  I was the voice opposite...uhh... I think his name is Todd.  Whatever.
http://www.ufoship.com/radio_spots/piss_drink.mp3

9)Rhino Strap-Ons.  A spot I wrote and voiced when I was 18.
http://www.ufoship.com/radio_spots/rhino_strapons.mp3

10)Tribute to Eugene.  A spot written by co-worker Bill.  He is the announcer voice . I'm Eugene.
http://www.ufoship.com/radio_spots/tribute_to_eugene.mp3

That's it.  Maybe some other crap will turn up and I'll dump it here along with the rest of this heap.  Cheers.

Archive of Old Threads / Some Changes On GNS...
February 02, 2009, 04:03:57 AM
I hope everybody will agree that I've made EXACTLY the right move here and that there will be absolutely no complaints whatsoever (yeah, right).

We talk about A LOT of things on this site.  It's been that way since day one and will continue until GNS serves up its final page view... hundreds of years from now.  However, I think we need to streamline things a bit around here.

A rule one must follow in the pursuit of creating a successful message board is to focus focus focus the board on one niche topic or another.  GNS has slowly evolved into a murky soup of politics, technology, and even consumer complaints.  I don't mean to suggest I'm without culpability in this schizophrenic mix.  On the contrary, I'm directly and explicitly responsible for the problem.

I've observed that this unfocused evolution has impeded our ability to grow as a community.  People have repeatedly come here expecting "George Noory sucks" and instead they get "Obama sucks" or "my computer is on the fritz."  Bullocks, I say.  There are a ZILLION other places to get that stuff.  Our job is to promote the fact that George Noory SUCKS!!  I want us to get back in the business of hammering that message home for the world to see.  When we move back in this direction, I promise you'll see an exponential growth on this website.

As such, I have decided to close the following boards:
Politics
Hawk Your Wares
Consumer Sound Off
MV's Radio Trainwreck
Computers and Technology
News and Information
The Supernatural
Conspiracy
Space, Time, and Life Beyond Earth

I have emptied and removed the board entitled "On Tonight's Show."  The board's topics have been assigned to the remaining boards as appropriate.

Nothing has been deleted permanently.  The missing boards are merely "invisible" to everybody.  That means if you were a participant in any of these boards, your contributions are not lost.  All will remain preserved.  These boards can be brought back at any time if there is a demand for it, but it's not likely to happen.

I hope this change doesn't anger anybody because that's the last thing I am seeking to do.  I just feel like we need to do what we do best, and that is to talk about how badly George Noory SUCKS.  Politics and consumer complaints can be handled elsewhere.

p.s.
Thanks to all of you who have made even one post on GNS.  Without you, we are nothing.

Archive of Old Threads / Tim Pate
January 02, 2009, 11:02:49 PM
I used to do my "Radio Trainwreck" show with Tim Pate.  The following quote was extracted tonight from the main page of Tim's website, TimPate.us, and it's why I love Tim:

"Really have no need for this site other then just having my name out on the web. I come here and throw shit up once in a while. I just once in a while come on here and write a bunch of shit with bad grammar ."

Tim, you are poetry.

This is the BellGab Archive.  It's a graveyard of threads.  Some of them fizzled out, while others never got off the ground to begin with.  Please take the time to look around and find something you'd like to breathe new life into.  If an old thread begins to see action, we will bring it back from the dead by moving it to the main forum again.

it happened during the summer, shortly before i left the country for 5 weeks.  i went overseas and forgot about it.  then last night, for some reason it popped into my head, and i was curious as to whether or not they caught the people who killed them.  i was surprised to find they have arrested nobody thus far.  what a shitty situation.

I've bashed Vista into the ground.  Anybody who followed my posts over at UFOShip could tell you that.  I took pleasure in pointing out how slow, unstable, bloated and cumbersome Microsoft's flagship operating system was.  See the following as evidence:  http://ufoship.com/comment.php?comment.news.100

I'm eating my words today.

Anybody who knows anything about computers could tell you that when Microsoft releases a new operating system, you should wait a MINIMUM of one year to install it on your machines.  The poor slobs who DO install a new operating system immediately after its release are going to be used as guinea pigs in the course of Microsoft's efforts to patch and update their new creation.  I personally don't enjoy being a guinea pig, and I'm thinking you probably don't either... and so it was that i waited OVER a year to install and/or use Vista for the first time.   I didn't wait long enough.

My primary machine, an Asus F8SP, is designed for Vista but thankfully, Asus is the world's greatest computer company and they take the time to release XP drivers for their new machines along with the standard Vista drivers.  I "downgraded" to XP and all was well... for the most part, that is.  I was having problems with some of the system function buttons like WIFI on/off, bluetooth on/off, etc..  The drivers behind these buttons, for whatever reason, just WERE NOT working well in an XP environment.  I suffered through it since doing so enabled me to escape the clutches of Vista.  Hell, in order to make sure I could toggle off/on my WIFI, I was disabling/enabling the wireless card in Device Manager.  Heh, yeah, I was eager to stay with XP at any inconvenience.

I finally grew tired of this song and dance about 2 months ago and decided to try Vista again.  I figured after about 9 or 10 more months, Vista SURELY must have made some strides in that time.  My instincts were right.  Vista, it pains me to say, is now what could be called "stable."  It's far snappier than I recall it being in the past.  It now boots more quickly than XP on the same system.  Most importantly, IT RUNS EVERY APPLICATION I HAVE THROWN AT IT.  That's right.  The chief complaint against Vista since its debut has been the lack of software compatibility.  This issue, for me at least, has been resolved.  I run a vast array of applications, some open source and some not.  Everything is fine now.

When I came back to Vista, there were about a zillion new updates beyond those MS released during my first Vista experience.  They appear to have zapped my woes in the course of these updates, and the patches/fixes continue.  As a matter of fact, Vista is on the brink of Service Pack 2.  That's right!  Take a look here:  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=dca54ecc-362a-4b4d-b62b-22780e839a7e&displaylang=en

As you might recall, XP suffered the same disastrous roll-out when it was released in 2001.  It wasn't until Service Pack 2 that XP began to evolve into the stable, tested operating system it is today.  I expect in about a year, Vista will be an operating system all MS users can feel just fine with, and XP will sadly begin to fade away as a distant memory in a fashion reminiscent of windows 2000.

By the way, I'd like to take this opportunity to say the following:  If you're a home user who just wants to check email, browse web pages, etc., use Ubuntu.  It's free, stable, safe and simple.  Don't bother yourself with the unnecessary expense of buying a Mac.  They're overpriced, they support relatively little software, they're the product of a viciously proprietary and controlling company that makes Microsoft look lovable and fuzzy, and they are horrid for gaming.  Unless you're editing video or audio, the Mac is an overpriced piece of crap.  Need proof?  Take a look at this oldie but goodie from UFOShip:  http://ufoship.com/comment.php?comment.news.105

Archive of Old Threads / Horrible Tv Hosts...
December 17, 2008, 05:51:07 PM
it has been brought to my attention that george noory does not suck because he has managed to get himself on tv.  based on the premise of this misguided philosophy, i present to you the following embarrassment:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdqMEfV-r9A&eurl=http://www.bestweekever.tv/2006/08/29/icymi-tvs-worst-talk-show-hosts/&feature=player_embedded

as you can see, getting on tv doesn't necessarily mean you don't suck.  many people have sucked rust off of a bumper while on tv.  being on tv didn't alleviate or mitigate their suckishness.  snoors is no exception.

while most of you are back in the usa facing the financial meltdown, i'm here in morocco tugging on a shisha with my beautiful wife on my arm.

not all is well, however.  i'm now battling my SECOND bout of some unknown intestinal virus.  to put it bluntly, i have had a serious case of "michael landon ass" over the course of the last few days.  wish me luck with that.

hope all is well with everybody.

i just went over to the afore mentioned snoory fan board to take a look.  at this very moment, our board has FOUR TIMES MORE users online than does theirs.  fuck that place.  i think within the next year, we will be the definitive snoory board.  period.  and without any promotion from ole strokemouth.  can't beat that.

this isn't really worthy of a thread, but i wasn't sure how else to communicate this.

if you clear your cache, you'll notice the font size of text within quotes has increased.

this is a change i meant to implement a long time ago, as i have received several complaints about it.  hope this helps alleviate some of your 2AM eye strain.

also, around the final week of august, this site will undergo a major overhaul in both functionality and design.  the only thing you will recognize after i'm finished will be your posts.  expect GNS to be down for several hours when this happens.

cheers,
michael vandeven

p.s.  i have received a few questions recently about the limitations of speech on this site.  i'd like to reiterate that there are no limitations here based on decency.  only the following types of content are forbidden: illegal, copyrighted, and slanderous/libelous.  if your words and/or content don't fall into either of these categories, you have free reign.  this site is for people 18+.

i am actually a bit embarrassed that i didn't mention this sooner on this site.

apollo 14 astronaut edgar mitchell who visited the moon in 1971 said in an interview to a british radio show a few days ago that aliens do in fact exist and have been visiting the planet for decades while the governments of the world have covered it up.  i have NEVER been big on the whole alien visitation thing.  i just haven't.  i really don't believe it.  however, this story makes me wonder if i should rethink my conclusions.   i mean it's EDGAR FUCKING MITCHELL saying this!!  come on!!

Archive of Old Threads / TV Shows That Suck
July 29, 2008, 03:31:24 PM
moments ago, i was forced into watching 30 minutes of a piece of shit called monk on the USA tv network.  it is yet another example of USA's inability to throw together a watchable tv show, regardless of the caliber placed upon their temple.  additionally, i've noticed that the people who generally choose to view this network over the HUNDREDS of options out there are mediocre people, at best.  in what way are they mediocre?  i'm not entirely certain as to the best way to articulate it.  they just are... in a general sense.  what a piece of shit tv show.  i could just puke.  i'm actually angry as i type this as a result of the fact something of this nature could make its way to a cathode ray tube... if anybody has one of those anymore.

blow me, monk.

UPDATE:  now that i have made this post, you'll see that there is a banner for that piece of shit show displaying in this website.  those mother fuckers.

by the way... doesn't that banner just piss you off?  ok, i know i haven't had a nicotine lozenge in hours, but DOESN'T IT PISS YOU OFF????  it is saying in pictures, "Ok, people.  Stand back.  You're in for some funny.  We've got some zany antics ready for you.  Ooooh buddy, there's gonna be some knee slappin' in this show."  BARF.  die, USA network.  DIE DIE DIE.

I don't know if this thread will take off or not, but we shall soon see.

I have been informed by Max that the Fantastic Dump-hole used to employ something similar to what I'm proposing here.  In essence, I guess it could be said I am "lifting" this idea from the dump-hole.  heh heh.

I want to invite all our members to use this thread each night while they're listening to C2C as a real-time "chat room" of sorts.  I think it would really be killer to see everybody commenting on what they're listening to AS IT'S HAPPENING... right here, in precisely the same fashion they would if it were a conventional chat room.

I envision this thread eventually being comprised of more pages than I'd care to count, since many of the posts will be very short in nature.

The only thing you'll need to remember when using this thread is the location of your browser's Refresh button.  Let the mockery begin!

watup.  i wanted to ask a favor of those of you who have websites.  please link to http://www.coastgab.com if you can.  it doesn't even have to be a prominently displayed link.  hell, it could be invisible, as a matter of fact.  it just needs to link.  why?

well, first of all, the obvious point is that linking to us will help generate traffic, which will in turn help to build the size of our community.

secondly, and i think most importantly, is that our position on the page in a google search is in part determined by the number of other sites who link to us.  the higher our rank in a google search, the more traffic and participation we will see.

of course, i also welcome those of you who link to us to promote your site(s) in the "hawk your wares" section of this site.  however, linking to us is not required in order to promote your site in that section of GNS.

together, we will build an empire.  MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHahahahaha.

Random Topics / Thanks To All of You.
July 11, 2008, 05:44:53 PM
i wanted to take a moment to say thanks to those of you who have taken the time to post even a single message on this site.  your unique, witty, profound, and sometimes ridiculously juvenile posts have moved us forward at a pace i would not have imagined possible when we launched on april 5, 2008.

our greatest month thus far in terms of "page views" was may of this year when we reached 41,377.  for this month (july), we are on pace to hit over 52,000.  this means people are DEFINITELY seeing your posts, which is a nice feeling when you're taking the time to contribute a work of literary art (as many of our members routinely do).

yeah, i know, some message boards might laugh at 52,000 page views.  sorry, but i don't.  we've been here for 3 months, and i'm supposed to laugh at 52,000?  bullocks, i say.

without you, coastgab.com is nothing.  we won't forget that philosophy as our community moves into the future.

inherent in an intangible venue such as this is the difficulty in giving something back to our members.  you must be creative... or downright predictable... in order to give something to people.  there really is no in-between.  we have chosen to go with "predictable."

with a projected 52,000 page views this month, i want to encourage all of you to participate in the "Hawk Your Wares" board which is accessible from the main page.  it gives you an opportunity to promote your product/service/website for free.  we only require that you have 15 posts to your name (in addition to the other common sense rules listed on that board).

i'm trying to come up with some nice, tidy way to tie this all up, but i've got nothing.

seacrest out.

it comes down to this:  we need a banner on this site.  i am no artist.  as a matter of fact, i'm the anti-artist.  i couldn't draw a pencil.  i need your help.

i know there is lot of graphic design talent out there just waiting to be discovered, and i hope to take advantage of some of that talent.

if you think you can create a banner for use on this site, we would love you to get crackin' and submit it to us.  here are some guidelines:

1) don't include any pictures of snoory in the banners.  i know it would be great, but there might be some "likeness misappropriation" issues there, which i would prefer to avoid.  however, a caricature of snoors in the banner would be absolutely fine.

2) rather than email your banner to us, it would be best if you attach it in a post inside this thread.  that way we can get feedback from all board members as we decide which banners to use.

3) there is no prize for the creator of the selected banners other than the pride of knowing your banners have been chosen to represent quite possibly one of the greatest contributions to the internet since the electron...  coastgab.com!

4) perfection isn't necessarily what we're looking for.  if that's what we were seeking, we would go to the professionals and hand them a couple ben franklins.  we're more interested in seeing banners that incorporate humor, originality, and uniqueness.  based on the literary prowess of our members, i have no doubt you guys are perfectly capable in this area.

5) obviously the banners should identify the site in some way.  you decide how to execute this.

6) don't worry about wasting your time creating a banner only to have another banner chosen over yours.  we will use each and every banner we deem worthy and place them in rotation.

7) if your banner isn't chosen, please do not drive to my house in your ford f-150 to kill me.  thank you.

i know you're thinking this new board is the result of self obsession and a need to show the world how glorious i am.  you couldn't be more incorrect.  this board now exists because there apparently is a demand for a forum to discuss the afore mentioned show.

i used to do an internet radio show called Michael Vandeven's Radio Trainwreck which aired live on my c2c stream which many of you now listen to regularly.

apparently, people are still listening to the recordings of this show, and it has been requested that we provide an area for the recordings to be discussed.  i guess this is that area.

as mentioned elsewhere, i plan to begin doing the show again in the near future when circumstances permit.

i make no claims as to the worthiness of said show.  you might enjoy it, or you might consider it complete dog shit.  regardless of which position you choose to take, i'll understand.

keep in mind that on a couple of the shows, the method i was using to record the audio was inadequate and caused either 1) dropped frames of audio or 2) generally poor audio quality.  sorry about that.

you can listen to the show here:  http://www.ufoship.com/page.php?14

unlike the other george, this george was incomparably talented, IMO.

i am a huge carlin fan.  i own all of his albums and books and i have several of his HBO specials on dvd, etc.  he was one of those guys who just seemed like they would never die.  guess i was wrong.

one of the best things about carlin was his ability to take a seemingly complex issue and boil it down verbally in a way that was brilliant in both its simplicity and accuracy.

i wanted to suggest that those of you who are familiar with carlin's work go to youtube (or elsewhere) and find a clip of your favorite carlin bit to post here.  here's mine:
