Random Topics / New Forum Organization
August 08, 2013, 05:47:59 AM
With Art's return to radio drawing nearer, some obvious reorganization of the forum has been needed.  I've separated most of the C2C/Noory topics into a child board located under "Talk Radio/Podcasts."  There is still more work to be done in the "Art Bell's Guests" and "Art Bell's Topics" sections.

I'm interested in comments on how the reorganization is being approached.

How To Use BellGab / Search
July 25, 2013, 07:56:20 PM
I've just overcome a major problem that has plagued this forum since its inception in April of 2005:  search.

The search functionality built into this forum software has ALWAYS sucked really hard.  It's now been replaced by a custom Google search of CoastGab.  Yes, it's the power of Google but limited to CoastGab only.  Nice, I know.

Random Topics / What forums do you use?
July 19, 2013, 12:12:30 PM
from time to time, i see people making mention of "other" forums they use.  while most other forums blow mule shaft when compared to coastgab (via any metric you choose), it is interesting to find out where else people are trollin'.

i will occasionally use XDA forums if i have an android issue i'm researching, but otherwise, i stay away from forums.  they're usually tightly controlled by really really fat men with personality disorders who've never touched a tit.

Random Topics / Sell Your Stuff
July 18, 2013, 06:02:40 PM
I thought it might be nice to have a thread where people can advertise items they want to sell, buy, etc... so this is it.  Actually, I think we had something like this years ago, but the forum's user base was far smaller in those days.  Soooo... whatever you want to sell or buy, list it here.

Random Topics / The Onion Is Not Funny
April 18, 2013, 12:15:23 PM
Look.

The Onion just isn't funny to me.  When I see their content, I always get the impression it's written by deliberately "ironic" Silicon Valley hipsters of privilege who smell their own farts, are incapable of laughing at themselves, are easily offended by specific categories of humor, live and die by political correctness (they'd never write anything to violate that), end every sentence with an upward inflection, and who use words like "inappropriate" and "offensive" in their day to day lives.  These types of people are never funny to anyone outside their hermetically sealed social circle.

Whenever someone links to an Onion piece (video or print) with the assurance that I'll laugh my ass off, I know I'm in for a funeral.  I occasionally catch some of the podcasts on Leo Laporte's TWIT network, and from time to time, an Onion writer will be on the guest panel.  They bring NOTHING to the table comedically, but I'm sure all of the hipster assholes Leo surrounds himself with think it's just the tops.  Bleh.

Let me add, I do understand and appreciate comedy (Hicks, Carlin, C.K., and Brian Regan being among my favorites), so my opposition to The Onion is not the result of me being a dried up, soulless scab of a human who hates to laugh.

I'm not saying The Onion has never done anything deserving of laughter.  My point is that they are supremely overrated as a comedic entity, and I'm tired of people refusing to see or admit that.

Today I was asked about this, so I'll assume there are other users who are unaware of this feature.

When posting a reply, if you scroll down a bit, you'll see a history of every message from the thread in which you're posting.  Next to each message is an "Insert Quote" link.  If you click that, it will insert that message as a quote in your post.  It will place the quote at your post's current cursor position.

Politics / Poll: Where do you stand?
November 14, 2012, 05:09:04 PM
I often see comments on the forum about how heavily tilted CoastGab's membership is toward the right-wing perspective.  I just don't see that.  Perhaps I'm wrong, but political tendencies here look pretty evenly spread to me, usually.

So, just for the sake of quantifying this in some sort of way, where do you fall?  Left or right?

"Centrist" or "moderate" were deliberately left out.  Commit to something, for fuck's sake.

Random Topics / Your Celebrity Stories
September 24, 2012, 05:07:34 PM
All of us have had encounters with "celebrities" over the years, and some of those encounters have resulted in interesting stories to tell.  For instance, a few years back I spent some time with Elizabeth Dole.  She kept looking at my bulge.  I was 17.

What are your celebrity stories/encounters?  I think this has the potential to be a really interesting thread, and not just because I started it.

Please, do tell.

I HATE HATE HATE the default view of private messages in this forum software.  It separates your inbox from your sent messages, removing any and all context of a conversation.  It's basically the way your text message inbox/sent would work on a cell phone from 2004.

If you want to change this so your personal messages are displayed in conversation form, it's easy to do.

Go here:

Your Profile > Modify Profile > Personal Messaging

Then, change the "Display Personal Messages" dropdown to "As a Conversation."

I didn't know until TODAY that this could be changed, and I've been running this damn thing since April 2008.  WTF.

Radio and Podcasts / Bill Carroll of KFI
June 18, 2012, 01:19:47 PM
when i'm at the office, i usually listen to limbaugh through the KFI live stream because our local affiliate is insufferable.  after rush, they have this guy named bill carroll who comes on for 3 hours and proceeds to bore the shit out of me.  WOW is this guy awful.  anyone heard him before?  and am i alone in my observations?  he is audio melatonin.  how he keeps this job on such a major station is beyond me.  either he's performing oral favors for someone or he has the dirt on who is.  i see no other explanation for how he's kept his job.

Ok... let's face it; the story you guys wrote in this thread was utter shite last time around.   Absolutely impossible to follow and entirely horrid.  I've removed it and we need to start over.

I think my rules were part of the problem last time around.  They were too restrictive and caused posters to overindulge with each post.  The rules are now quite relaxed, so stop that.

Let's begin again.

The purpose of this thread is to write a novel, one user and one post at a time.  Here are the rules:

1) Try to build upon what was written before you rather than needlessly injecting random non sequiturs for fun.  Remember, someone will one day read this work in its entirety.  Try not to turn it into a scatterbrained suck-fest.

2) Only 4 sentences per post in this thread.

3) You may post twice per day in this thread.

4) No references to George Noory, Premiere Radio, Coast to Coast AM, Art Bell, or ANY of that universe.  Pretend, for the purposes of this work, you know nothing about any of that.  Please.  Fucking please.

5) Only post in this thread if you are adding to the novel.  All other posts will be deleted.

I will let one of you begin the story.

Based on Zircon's suggestion, it is entitled, "Aftermath."

Politics / Random Political Thoughts
February 08, 2012, 10:50:42 AM
Rather than continue spreading political conversations across other threads, it seems best that we have a centralized location for such discussions.  Sooo... here's the politics thread.

I'll start.

If Romney is the Republican nominee, there is NO WAY Obama loses in November.  Romney is absolutely unelectable vs. Obama, and I'm sick of this notion that his supposed electability is the reason to support him.  His views are so congruent with those of Obama that I see NO REASON to bother winning in November if he's the nominee, anyway.  I support Ron Paul, although I know he won't be the nominee.  I'd vote for Gingrich if he were on the ballot in November, but I've begun to believe he can't win the nomination.  Santorum is another authoritarian conservative obsessed with gay marriage, but I guess I'd vote for him if he were the nominee.  Yawn.  I'm pretty depressed over the "choices" offered in this primary season.

Archive of Old Threads / Are you better off today?
December 03, 2011, 11:53:46 AM
Are you better off today than you were 10 years ago?  I'm curious as to what people here will say in response to this admittedly hacky question.  Usually when this question is asked of people, I think the expected answer is NO.

Myself, I'd have to answer yes.  Without a doubt.  Granted, everything I have has been by my own doing and not the result of some brilliant genius in the government... but I'm waaay better off today than 10 years ago.  What about everyone else here?

Technology / Join Our SETI@home team.
October 21, 2011, 01:45:57 PM
Watup.  Do any of you remember the SETI At Home project?  It goes back many years.  When your computer is idle, it makes use of your CPU to analyze radio signals from space recorded at the Aricebo Observatory.  They are hoping to detect radio signals from extraterrestrials.  I've been running it for a week or so on my machines here at the office, and I created a CoastGab SETI team which you can join here:

Archive of Old Threads / Stop Being An Asshole.
May 07, 2011, 02:55:46 PM
I'm noticing a recent trend toward hostility on CoastGab.  It sucks.  Flaming and belittling add nothing to the experience on this forum and only serve to scare away new members (and existing ones).  I'm not going to allow it to continue.  I'm tired of repeating this: Read the Terms of Service and abide by them.  If you can't manage that, then this isn't the forum for you.  Go spread chaos somewhere else.  You won't be missed.

If you're considering a rude approach toward a fellow user due to the length of their posts or their use of grammar and/or punctuation, please think twice.  You're ruining this forum and inflating my blood pressure.  I don't think it's unreasonable to expect you, and adult, to simply ignore members whose posts you don't enjoy.

Random Topics / I Need Airfare Help!!!!
April 26, 2011, 10:29:13 PM
I'm hoping someone here has experience with international airfare.  I need to book a flight from St. Louis, MO to Casablanca, Morocco... departing on/about June 29 and returning on/about September 21.  The cheapest round trip ticket I found today was around $1,770 after all taxes and fees.  Just a couple of days ago, I was finding tickets for around $1,650.

I've even tried booking a one way ticket from St. Louis to the east coast and then a separate round trip ticket from there to Casablanca and back... with one more one way ticket back to St. Louis.  The savings are minimal by doing this... and it's also going to force a DOUBLE checking of bags, obviously... and a DOUBLE payment of fees associated with checked baggage since the bags won't be checked to the end of the trip in either direction.  No thank you.

I am going nuts with all of this.  The last time I bought international plane tickets was in 2008, and this time around, I'm finding it more difficult to sort through the noise.  I just CAN'T believe $1,770 is the best I can do here.  Can any of you help me out?  Any tips?

Archive of Old Threads / Anybody do graphics?
March 17, 2011, 12:36:04 PM
as you know, we're going to be transitioning this forum to a more generalized "talk radio" format rather than focusing specifically on art bell and/or coast to coast am.  the site will have to be renamed, and in the course of doing so, i'm also going to need a new banner/image/logo at the top.  anyone here have graphics skills?  there's absolutely zero pay in it for you, but you'll be able to sleep well at night knowing your logo is being enjoyed by thousands of people daily.

We have been served with a DMCA notice by the suits at Clear Channel.  Click here to read it.

What does this mean?  You are no longer allowed to attach Coast to Coast episodes in your posts.  You can, however, post links to shows as long as those links point to another server.

Please cancel your Streamlink accounts, everyone.  Please.  It's the only weapon we have to punish them for their stupidity.  I've never explicitly asked anyone to do this until now.  I hope all of you will.

This incident has only hastened my resolve to get my entire Art Bell collection posted on Bittorrent asap.  I promise this will happen soon.
