Pretty funny cartoons, Rix.  The guy's head rising in the sun is a little freaky, though.

I've read that the whole white-slavery thing was hugely sensationalized by the newspapers back then, but don't know enough to tell either way.  Funny that they're sold by the pound, though; these days it'd be inversely proportional I think.

Yeah, that head coming up over the mountain is Charles Evans Hughes, Sr., the dude who went up against Wilson in the 1916 Presidential Race.  I haven't been posting much on the guy, guess because I already know who wins, haha.  One thing though, the election was a close one.  Here is some info on Hughes:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Evans_Hughes  Quite a fellow, actually.

WTF, she opened a can of pickles on a TV show? I'm a #hillshill now.

Ha.  The dude said 'untampered with' yet his microphone and Hillary's microphone couldn't pick up the usual 'pop' sound of a vacuum lid being opened.  Somebody loosened it up ahead of time.

Hahaha nice.  You bring up an interesting point, though:  so used to thinking of a stage as a horse-drawn affair, but the term continued to be used for what we'd call buses serving the same function well through this period.  Here is one near me circa 1912:

and in the late '30s at what was still called the stage stop on the Bothell-Everett highway:

Neat pics, K.  I'd like to ride around in both of them.

Ha.  My natural inclination is to praise the policemen for their thoughtful response in the singing item and excoriate the sorry reporting party for a lemon-sucking killjoy, but a caterwauling tone-deaf neighbor with a questionable repertory has me reappraising my position.

Also wondering what circumstances found a drunken prizefighter stumbling through a second-hand store after hours.  Maybe he thought he was home and forced the door.

I guess I would be cool with Edna and her three companions filling the air with song, as long as it was tasteful and done during the day.  But late at night, when I'm trying to sleep?  No way.  I'd have to go tell the foursome to take their act to the stage...there's one leaving in ten minutes.  Haha

A photo postcard of a typical British soldier from World War One.  Not sure which year of the war the photograph was taken.  As you can see, this is an unused postcard so there is no information to be got from it.  Come to think of it though, the postcard was made in Canada, so perhaps a Canadian soldier?

Well there is my battered woman, and in unremarkable circumstances, too.  I guess they do make the paper.  I'm still struck by how many of these stories are about women throwing crockery.

I'd never considered the grenade as a defensive weapon to be hurled at an approaching enemy above ground, but I guess when they're coming you give them everything you've got.

Yes, I noticed Mrs B's plight too.  Kind of horrifying to think but the paper didn't state if the husband was hauled off to jail.  Kind of like she had it coming?  The police were mentioned in the piece though, so here's hoping.

That is a very long hand grenade.  Not sure I've seen that type before.  I do know that the Germans had a grenade that was globular in shape with the required handle for throwing.  The British, in a somewhat macabre manner, labeled them as being 'Toffee Apples'.

It is interesting.  I noticed two pipe smokers there, good for them.  I'm surprised that none of them mentioned Teddy R. who briefly flirted with running but then (perhaps wisely) dropped the idea.  The old gents mentioned some other names that I don't recognize.  (Recognized 'Hank' Ford, tho. haha)

Nice hat!  Definitely Austrian.  "Kaiserlich und königlich" shows up everywhere in the old empire.

Here's a cool one with an edelweiss for their mountain troops:

Wow! Now that's something else.  Thanks, K.

Karl Hinterleitner was a member of the Pioneer Corp. k.u.k. (third battalion) 10th Company, 14th Infantry Regiment.  Not much info on this soldier, other than his military status and the fact that he was killed on the Gorzer front on August 19, 1916.  (I couldn't locate any information on the Gorzer front.)  He was 33 years old.

An actual photograph of Karl has been pasted to this card.  Nice hat.  Austrian or is it a part of the 'Pioneer' uniform?

Did any of you see Africa's Caster Semenya run in the Women's 800 meters qualifying event last night?  I happened to catch it.  Wow, what a runner.  She stayed with the pack for a good three quarters of the race and then like magic, (or rather, Usain Bolt) she easily made her way to the front and took first place with ease.  She is very masculine looking...very muscular.  I have never heard her talk, but others have said that she has a deep, man like voice.  And therein lies the problem.  Caster, through no fault of her own, was born with testes that remain inside of her and they pump out high levels of testosterone, thus she has increased strength and endurance over the other female competitors.  People are divided into two camps regarding her.  It's kind of like a Clinton/Trump thing.  Some think that she is more a man than a woman and shouldn't be competing in the race.  The other side thinks that she should be looked on with love and understanding, and be allowed to compete in the races and receive, beyond all certainty, the gold medal.  They played a pre-race feature on her last night and I was left with the impression that some of the other racers were less than happy to be racing with Caster.  Anyway, here's the article.  She will be running in the final, later tonight or tomorrow, I'm not sure which.  http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/20/sports/caster-semenya-800-meters.html?_r=0
