I just posted in the Politics thread about Ted Nugent publically discussing a run for prez in '16.  In that post I mentioned that he is quoting as bragging about shooting 450 hogs from a helicoptor in four hours, concluding his bravado by saying, "Now, let me loose in South Central... just kidding!"

Paul Deen drops the N word and is toast; Nugent "jokes" about murdering scores and gets celebrated (by some).  We live in a curious time....

This is NOT a tacit acceptance on my part for the use of the dreaded N word, and I hope to (Insert your Cosmic Deity here) it doesn't sound like it.  I'm just a little dismayed at the seeming double standard.  It's okay for rappers and rockers to sing about bitches and whores... we award them with a Grammy.  Various people use all sorts of homophobic words and phrases, issue a clearly-phony apology, and life pretty much goes on.

There clearly must be more to the Deen story than I know (having just scanned the surrounding headlines for the past few days).  If she is, indeed, a huge bigot selling heart attack-inducing foods, then screw her.

There are very few completely evil people. I don't think Deen is in that category. She is insensitive/stupid and self serving... then again ain't we all at times? Her inability to realize her bigotry is just another facet of her stupid.

Nugent is a perfect example of a sociopath. Maybe it is all show, if so, it is still vile. Suggesting resolving a social issue with gun fire is the problem and this dimwitted-self-proclaimed-alpha-male does nothing but inflame. I would love to see him say this shit in the hill district in Pittsburgh without a fire arm in his hand.

Paula Deen failed to understand that she had committed the Original Sin of being born a white Southerner.  No amount of time working as a loyal Democrat or no amount of donations to Obama would absolve her of her sin.  Besides, that upper crust coastal Georgia accent of hers is annoying as hell - and I was born in Georgia.

I am not sure what you mean by this. I suppose it is meant as some defensive sarcasm.

Her predicament has little to do with her geographical origins. It has to do with being out of touch. It has to do with the inability to accept and apologize for racist behaviors instead it was outside her control, others fault that she said and did the things she is in trouble for.

As much as I believe words only have the value the listener places on them, one would be a fool to not realize, most will not give that kind of benefit to doubt.

She is a >60 year old woman that should have known better. She is being tried in the court of public opinion, which isn't kind to most. But she placed herself there. And in my opinion, the only reason for her remorse now, is her realizing she is losing her prestige and her money.

Despite the irrational (and predictable) keenings of the Left after the Supreme Court struck down parts of The Voting Rights Act, I like to think (pretend?) that we've turned the corner on non-institutional racism in our day-to-day lives in this country. Then I see something like this, which, despite the fact that people who regularly comment on YouTube videos, blogs and newspaper articles lean toward being flaming nitwits, reminds me that we have a long way to go.

i believe Paula Deen was poor single mom when she started to cook for a living.  her accent is not "upper crust"

Two questions: How long before the first video is posted on YT to say this never happened? Okay, three questions; Alex Jones says it's a false flg something or other..and the self proclaimed twat digital media guy to be given his own chat show?

That some asshole can be busy taking pictures and twatting them whilst fellow passengers are escaping a burning aircraft has done the persuasion job on me there should be provision in the new world wide constitution I've just written, for mandatory executions for those such as him who just can't give a valid reason to waste oxygen..harsh but I feel fair.

A 777 crashed in San Fran today.  I fly about 75,000 miles a year.  I fucking hate air crash stories.

God, we men are easy sometimes...  Yes, that young lady is quite flexible, but I wonder if a stadium filled with women would cheer so loudly if Bart Connor did something similar (a triple Salchow split-fingered fastball).  Would men cheer if that young lady had sauntered out to the field and presented an astonishing new theory along the lines of E=mc2 ?

We're both men of the world my friend; I think we both deep down know the answers to all the questions you've asked...Deep down.

On that note, who decided that sucking air through teeth was an erotic soundtrack to porn films? I overheard a woman in the market telling her best friend that sort of thing goes on, I'm just clarifying.... ???

Not to get all "righteous" here... but I just thought it was an amazing wind up. I didn't think anything sexual at all.

Nor I.

Juan

The pitch was high and outside to a right-handed batter.  Almost a wild pitch.

I think if she practiced the technique more she probably could throw it faster.

That actually was my thinking. I expect somewhere in the future that may well be part of the wind up.

She seemed to come to enough of a hesitation or stop that any momentum she had was lost.  That would be very distracting to the batter though

Not that their windups were like hers at all, but watching that reminded me a little of Luis Tiant and Juan Marichal

Yes, I think she wanted to make sure she got that ball near the catcher.

Heh. You're dating yourself. Quick, "John Roseboro"!

Juan

August 22, 1965 - with Marichal in the batter's box, Kofax throws a brush-back pitch.  On the return throw, Roseboro brushed Marichal's ear. Marichal said something to Roseboro, Kofax came off the mound and the fight was on. As umpire Shag Crawford pulled Marichal down, Marichal swung his bat and hit Roseboro in the head, opening a bloody wound.

See, that's what the DH has done to baseball.  No knock-downs of pitchers. No real baseball.

A little before my time, but I remember Curt Gowdy and Joe Garagiola talking about it from time to time to fill space on Giant-Dodger games of the week.  And after all these years, the DH still sucks.

you think theres a gathering of aliens somewhere holding a memorial for their lost comrades back in 47?

The DH is Pussy Ball. The DH is Moron Ball. It disposed of baseball's unique and brilliant mirror-image which gave it an inherent balance. It permitted the rise of the snotnose pitcher, and now baseball is full of 1½-pitch wonders who can pose as badasses only because there's no real danger of a true reckoning for any of their acting out. It also made the game attractive to non-fans who do not love or care to learn the beauty of the real game; who instead want to see 14-9 games where the winner stacks up 22 hits, (17 singles and 5 dingers) 12 LOB, 0 steals and 0 caught stealing, because "chicks dig the long ball". And it has taken 75% of the strategy out of the AL game. Finally, it has permitted baseball to staff itself with an army of crippled half-players who couldn't play real ball 4 days in a row if their lives depended on it, but who, because the bat is the last to go and most of them can still get around on a 1, can extend their unbelievably remunerative careers another 5-8 years. The DH is shameful and soft.

But I still think Juan Marichal should have been suspended far more than the 9 days he got. And his fine of $1,750 was a pittance, although those were days of tiny salaries by comparison to the breathtakingly large paychecks players get now. Most disgusting was Marichal's dishonorable and self-serving non-apology after the attempted murder of Roseboro. He claimed a ridiculous theory of pre-emptive self-defense. But the videos show Marichal was not a man protecting himself, but a beserker who was out of mind with rage, and who would have beaten Roseboro's head in if several players and particularly the umpire had not stopped him. He was an animal. Perhaps baseball had its true say about how it felt about Marichal because he only made it into the HOF on his fifth and last year of eligibility.

But it was also one of the first examples in sport of the "golden rule" of "they who have the gold, rule". To have suspended Marichal for life or even the rest of the year would have cost the Giants too much money. Marichal was a one of baseball's premier pitchers even in a day when the game was full of HOF pitchers who had sub-3 career ERAs, and it was just too costly to baseball to lose him. *sigh*

        Well there's always trains... :-[

As someone who lives not too far from a shitload of factories that have a steady flow of trains carrying chemicals, "propellants" etc, this disaster in Quebec scares me more than a plane wreck. Which is saying something, because I also live on the final approach to Logan Airport. Those foggy nights sometimes you wonder if a 747 will be landing on our roof.

During daylight hours, I moon all incoming flights. So if you see a corpulent fellow dropping his trousers on the Day Boulevard boardwalk overlooking the beach on Boston Harbor. That's possibly me...or one of my stand-ins(I don't moon on the Sabbath or Tuesdays ending with a 6)

i know for a fact snakes can swim. i was making a joke.  that given the ridiculous nature of these giant critter movies on syfy someone would call bullshit on snakes swimming but perfectly fine with giant anaconda vs giant octopus.  or trying to make a joke

It has been a tough couple of weeks in my homeland - floods, terror plots, train derailments, more floods. The death toll in Quebec could reach almost 50.

Was speaking to a colleague who flew out of San Fran yesterday.  Saw the 777 wreckage out his window as they were taxiing for take off.
