I thought I'd gone to town detailing my big glider. This is pathological! Just get a look at the rivet counting. It hasn't flown yet, it's due it's maiden flight later this summer. And yes the fin insignia isn't correct, that's because it's been illegal to display the swastika in Germany for decades. They're pretty picky about it. The sound is wonderful from the twin rotary engines. (I think they're Moki 250 cc)

Is it the same model plane that Indy had his big fist fight scene on in Raiders?

No, that one was a pusher prop (twin I think) no idea of the type, the Germans built a lot of experimental planes in WW2, most never got past the prototype and I think the one in Raiders was possibly such an aircraft.

The 188 that this model is based on was built in reasonable numbers but it's sister the Ju88 had more of an influence with lots of variations, including being converted into the 'Mistel' towards the end of the war. Basically it was packed with explosives and slung below an Me109 or Fw 190 and used as a free fall/semi guided bomb.

I wonder if that ban extends to vintage war birds? I know a South African pilot who used to fly DC3s as part of a heritage thing, and they were able to get a special dispensation to display the old South African flag on the fuselage.

It applies in Germany (Swastika). If he was flying it in another country he'd be fine. I've been at glider meets where they've come from all over Europe with model vintage gliders. The German models based on full size pre-war gliders don't usually have swastikas on the fin if they're German owned. Everyone else usually (Not always) keeps it authentic.

Was reading about Pakistani pilots during their wars with India, and came across these two with interesting stories:

Muhammad Mahmood Alam - credited with shooting down 9 Indian aircraft, including what is claimed to be 5 in one minute while flying a Sabre.

8 pass Charlie - an unknown Canberra bomber pilot who conducted moonlight solo bombing raids where he made 8 passes to drop each of his bombs individually rather than dropping his load all at once as usual.

German air force in dire straits - chief of staff
Quote“The Luftwaffe is at a low point,” Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz, who took over as chief of staff of the air force about a month ago, told 200 industry executives, military officers and lawmakers at an event in Berlin on Wednesday evening.
Gerhartz said his assessment followed visits to various air force sites and discussions with troops that revealed serious deficits in the readiness of aircraft and other equipment.

A February ministry report showed only 39 of 128 Eurofighter jets were available for training and combat use last year on average, and just 26 of 93 older-model Tornado fighter jets.

NASA to conduct F/A-18 quiet supersonic flights over Galveston in November
QuoteUsing the F/A-18 and its ability to aim quiet sonic thumps at a specific area, teams from Armstrong, Langley Research Center in Virginia, and Johnson Space Center in Texas â€" along with industry partners â€" plan to conduct a series of data-gathering flights over Galveston, Texas, in November 2018.

The Gulf Coast city was chosen because it was next to the Gulf of Mexico, which enables the F/A-18 to keep its louder sonic booms (near the dive point) out to sea, while throwing the quieter sonic thumps (far forward of the dive point) at Galveston.

At least 500 resident volunteers will be solicited to provide input to a secure web site about what they’ve heard, if anything, and what they felt about the sound.

At the same time, audio sensors strategically placed around the city will provide researchers a measure of scientific ground truth about how loud the noise really was.

“We’ll never know exactly what everyone heard. We won’t have a noise monitor on their shoulder inside their home. But we’d like to at least have an estimate of the range of noise levels that they actually heard,” said Alexandra Loubeau, NASA’s team lead for sonic boom community response research at Langley.

I assume that F-104 belongs to the Starfighter Inc guys out of Florida.  I saw them perform several years ago, they put on a very loud, dynamic show.  I think their fleet is a combination of former Canadian and Italian aircraft.

It always amazed me that, despite the number of nations that flew the Starfighter and all the conflicts in the world over its service life, the F-104 had only one confirmed killed, a lowly Alize ASW (see photo) aircraft of the Indian Navy shot down by the Pakis.

There's a song about that from the point of view of a Bundeswehr pilot on his 'last flight':

Friends don't let friends fly Starfighters.  ;)
There's still a lot of controversy in Germany over the Starfighter's record and the dodgy circumstances surrounding their aquisition.

USMC pilot under investigation for flying phallic-shaped flight over California
QuoteA U.S. Marine Corps T-34C pilot from VMFAT-101 is under investigation after it was revealed that his flight path resembles a penis while over the Salton Sea, California on Oct. 23. Maj. Josef Patterson, spokesman for 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, told NBC 7 San Diego that the Marine Corps would determine possible disciplinary action after the investigation was completed.

Horrific video here - one aircraft lands and another comes in right behind it before the deck is cleared.
Someone sure screwed the pooch.

That story reminded me of this famous WWII mishap.  I saw a model, more of a diorama actually, of this accident back in the days when I was an IPMS modeler.

I had never heard of this incident.   It's totally insane!

Thanks for posting Duke.
