why does Piers Morgan deserve a beating?  because his opinion differs from yours?

this thread needs some

He's a deeply unpleasant individual, nothing to do with his political opinions. When he was a newspaper editor he was infamous for sustained harrassment of anybody who dared criticise him - getting journalists to camp on people's doorsteps, go through their trash, that sort of thing.

I agree he doesn't deserve a beating though. But only just.

b_dubb

i guess the lesson here is that if you're in the media and all you get paid to do is flap your gums your career is more likely to continue if you piss people off than if you act like a professional journalist.  when was the last time you heard anyone bitch about anyone from PBS News Hour or NPR?

They never sunk to having Alex Jones as a guest either.

whether he deserves a beating or not, i'll leave up to others to decide... but he's definitely a rude shit who calls people "stupid" during interviews because their opinions differ from his.  a complete cunt of the highest order if i've ever seen one.

I agree he is rude and hear tell he is probably an ass too. But Rush called someone a slut. no serious outrage there. Not that it is your responsibility to do so.

And back at the stupid thing... I think many here at the CG ranch have sectioned off a rather large group of the US and branded stupid on them... yeah I'm guilty as charged.

Juan Williams et al. for starters. I could go on...

Quote and pics from C-SPAN

QuoteJuan Williams talked about his new book, Muzzled: The Assault on Honest Debate, in which he wrote about his controversial comments about Muslims in 2010, which resulted in him being fired from his job at National Public Radio. He also wrote about his feelings regarding the effects of political correctness on policy debate.

Mr. Williams was previously a reporter for the Washington Post. He has also written numerous other books, including Eyes on the Prize, and Thurgood Marshall: American Revolutionary.

point taken, but i think there's a difference between a radio host calling a complete stranger a slut behind the safety of his microphone without looking her in the eye and a man who will look a guest in the eye and call him "stupid" during the course of what was supposed to be a serious discussion.  one is a prudish, hypocritical act of cowardice by a man who was caught with viagra in his doctor's name when returning from the dominican republic (wonder what he was using those pills for down there).  the other act is a window into the soul of a narcissistic, contemptible pile of shit.  it takes some real personality flaws to speak that way to another human being during a conversation.  i guess one could say rush at least gets nicey nice when he comes face to face with his adversaries (he did apologize to hillary over his remarks about chelsea).  piers is just a dick, both face to face AND when he's beyond arm's reach.

i'm tired and i have little confidence in the above paragraph.

I feel compelled to add I am no apologist for Alex Jones. I think he did a great disservice to the cause of thoughtful debate about the recently resurrected issue of guns. Then again, the MSM and "hollywood" know-nothings are also doing a disservice by their mind-numbing ignorance about the issue, and furtherance of an agenda devoid of truly intellectual debate. Their tactics of debate would easily be defeated by any competent high-school debate team - but that's not appropriate for this thread, so I'll stop here.

Hollywood "know nothings" make billions glorifying gun violence.  Look at the top movies right now, Django is not a love story.

Big city folk and country folk just have very different experiences with guns, in big cities almost all gun interactions come from the criminal element and for country folk almost all gun interactions come from positive experiences like shooting or hunting.  Both experiences are valid and we can build gun laws that support both groups.  Most gun owners, rural and city, support a background check for each gun buyer and most gun used in big city crime are bought at gun shows with no background checks.

Why cant we just do background checks for everyone?

It seems in the cesspool of crime I live near, most guns used in crimes are stolen from houses when they rob them or black market imported by the really bad gangs. Ya can't buy cheap full auto AK's at a gun show, dontcha know.
If you buy a gun from a dealer, I'm pretty sure they do background checks?

Oh and the Gov. can't seems to handle the laws we have now about background checks. I have a family member. Legaly Bat Shit crazy, spent time in Jail for driveing her car though her boyfreinds house, spent time in a physc ward many times. medicated, hears voices, the whole 9 yards.
And it appears the FBI can't keep records, she has had to surrender guns she bought( probably on the black market) the last few times she when off the deepend, and yet the gun dealer got the report back that she was good for a  pistol. ???

I really do not want to fight about this, but since I think one of the problems is that we work from different assumptions too often, instead of facts:

1) Most crimes are committed with handguns, not long guns: http://www.nij.gov/topics/crime/gun-violence/
2) Most guns used in crime are bought legally: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-08-27/news/chi-study-suburban-gun-shops-source-of-city-crime-20120826_1_suburban-gun-shops-gun-laws-gun-violence
3) Many guns in crimes have been reported stolen, this actually means the straw purchaser reported a stolen gun in many cases, not that the gun was actually stolen (straw purchasers need to report guns as stolen, so they are not conspirators in later crimes where the guns are used).  Most guns used in crime are not actually stolen: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/guns/procon/guns.html
4) Guns are easy to get and prolific in cities where they are outlawed, as they are so easy to get in surrounding suburbs and states: http://www.suntimes.com/news/crime/14618767-418/getting-a-gun-in-chicago-quick-and-easy.html
5) At least half the gun purchased have no associated background check: http://www.uppitywis.org/blogarticle/wanna-buy-gun-cant-pass-background-check-no-problem
6) Being nuts is not a problem for the purchase of guns in the large majority of cases.  You have to be actually declared nuts by a judge, which is very rare even for most menatlly ill people: http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/gun-rights-and-crazy-people/

Getting a gun is much easier than getting a driver license or getting on an airplane.  There is no need for your nutty relative to go to the black market, she need only go to a gun show or legally buy a gun from the classified ads, where no background check is required at all.

Just having a phone in discussion (after playing the clip) on the radio right now. A guy (American) came on and stated the commonly held belief that Jones is clearly in need of anger management and should probably not be allowed near guns. He also pointed out that Jones would likely not be called into court as a witness, but as an exhibit. Interestingly, he also said that Morgan showed great restraint--but then he hardly had a chance to get a word in edgeways. I should point out that IMO Piers Morgan should be answering to his peers over allegations against him, but that doesn't make Jones a sane person.

Jasmine

I don't know Piers Morgan's professional history enough to feel qualified to formulate a tangible opinion of him, but I do agree with him re the gun situation/mindset in the U.S. is a nightmare. The elephant in the room is the very fact that no matter what is debated, no matter what laws or policies are implemented, the horses are well out of the barn and roaming free where gun control is concerned. This "debate" should have taken place long, long ago, while the situation was perhaps (I could be wrong) somewhat containable. Then again, "somewhat containable" offers no concrete solutions or respite. It's a situation which is well out of control at this point.

While I don't think Alex Jones did himself any good by his ranting and raving on Pier's show, and came across as a stark raving lunatic, I cannot say that I disagree with him about certain beliefs he holds, namely the questioning of 9/11. I myself don't have the answers, but I do ask questions, and am instantly attacked and labelled as a tin foil mad hatter for even broaching the subject and stating my questions about the events of that day.  Speaking of which, it was a very low blow and cheap shot for Piers to interject and suddenly ask Jones out of the blue about his beliefs re 9/11 and other "conspiracies". It had nothing to do with gun control, yet everything to do with Morgan painting a picture of Jones for the audience - a portrait of Jones wearing a tin foil hat in order for Jones to be instantly discredited. Jones' mocking Morgan's British accent was another low blow on his part.

In my opinion, neither Morgan (from what I've seen of him) or Jones is the positive proverbial poster boy for their respective camps.

My armchair diagnosis of Alex Jones: paranoid schizophrenic in catastrophic need of meds, and perhaps also a strait jacket.

And I am now estranged from my Texas nephew who lives by the words this man spews out. Tragic that there are not even any butterfly nets in sight.  :'(

^^^^ THIS is the tragedy. There are those who do believe similar things.. You only have to take a cursory look on Youtube at the amount of videos revered as 'great work' or 'research' with regard to some bullshit assertion that (for example) we were to be killed by a fictitious planet last december; It matters not that a video three times longer using peer reviewed facts into the mix is presented; or any number of debunks are put out-again using facts rather than the paranoid rantings of too much exposure to science fiction or mind altering substances.  Have you noticed how many of these scare mongering morons have posted equally long videos apologising for causing real fear in children and the easily led? It's around the zero mark.

And yet, here we all are talking about him, which is the reason he does the things he does in the first place. Soon as we all decide to ignore the attention whores of the world (including both Alex Jones and Piers Morgan, among way too many others), the far fewer of them we'll have.

(For the record, I don't think Alex Jones is mentally ill, just very clever at self-promotion. And I can't top MV's description of Morgan as a narcissistic, contemptible pile of shit.)

The emperor of China asked his court painter, "What's easy to paint and what's hard to paint?" and the answer was "Dogs are difficult, demons are easy."

I wouldn't be surprised if it goes viral... which I think AJ is hoping for.

CrabbyOld Bat

My biggest prob with the obnoxious, paranoid, irrational, delusional, rage-filled Alex Jones is that I don't think there's any doubt he's mentally ill (even if the exact psychiatric disorder(s) is/are up for debate) and HE OWNS MULTIPLE GUNS.

Isn't the NRA in agreement with gun control advocates that mentally ill people shouldn't own or have access to guns?

Watching and listening to Jones go into one his rage-filled, delusional rants makes me think he'd be the perfect poster child for a "Just Say No To Gun Ownership By The Mentally Ill" movement.

Anyway, as for Piers, I don't especially like him but deporting him for simply expressing an opinion is ridiculous. Actually, I think deporting Alex Jones as a threat to national security makes far more sense. But I still wouldn't waste tax payers' money by forcing the WH to respond to a silly petition requesting Jones get the boot.

Tara

I'm not psychic, but I predict that one of these days Alex Jones will go off the deep end, physically harm someone, and land in the slammer.  I would HATE to be his wife; don't tell me that she isn't being abused,  if only verbally.

Whose voice is more grating, Jones or the Obamaphone lady?  Tough call.

I have a very good online friend who I also occasionally speak to on the phone who lives in Utah..She was raised a mormon (predictably) on her grandfathers farm , but since her teenage years has (as she put it) grew up and realised that all religion is a con and in many cases pure evil. I sent her the link of Alex Jones yelling at Piers Morgan-she asked me who Piers Morgan was, and I gave her his potted history in the UK etc... She watched the video and then typed 'Oh God, I'm so sorry he's American, I apologise on behalf of Americans'!

Now, being raised on a farm, she naturally knows how to shoot, although she doesn't own or have access to guns now. She asked me how Alex Jones could be allowed to own any gun let alone apparently fifty; I replied, I had no idea, because in the UK he'd be subject to a psycological profile examination (and have to have a damn good reason to need a weapon in the first place) before being granted a firearms licence, and that maybe she should address the question to the Texas authorities. She did say however she thinks AJ is 'chicken shit' and would be felled with a good kick to the balls. :)

SredniVashtar

I have never thought Alex Jones was insane. You only have to watch him when he broadcasts his radio show - while he might appear to be doing a very convincing impersonation of that girl from the Exorcist, he always has half an eye on his out time for the ad breaks. A certifiable loon would never be that in control. It has been a long time since I have listened to him, but he always seemed to be able to summon up a few minutes of splenetic outrage when there were a few minutes to fill. He's a clever man; completely useless, in some ways, for those who see him as some kind of hero of the resistance, but a shrewd businessman who knows that he needs to differentiate himself from the herd, and making himself out to be 'that guy who's fuckin' nuts' is as good a technique as any. Anyone else who purports to offer an 'alternative' perspective winds up looking boring and/or creepy (i.e Rense), and I guess someone who looks and acts like a Satanically possessed Sumo wrestler at least stands out from the crowd.

Piers Morgan made his bones editing a showbiz column on The Sun in the UK, where he was 'affectionately' known as Piers Moron, and I think that the Jones interview was more a meeting of two shameless self-promoters than anything more substantial. I don't think that you could ever call Morgan 'popular', in fact I think he would almost always feature prominently' on anyone's 'Top 10 people I'd most like to hammer unconscious with a shovel' lists, but it was one of those contests where you want both people to lose.
