The Other Side of Midnight - Richard C. Hoagland - Live Chat Thread

The moon, a faint crescent, scarce gave enough light
To mark the Sandias far off in the night
Against the horizon, from whence came the breeze
Whose icy cold blast brought grown men to their knees.
It whistled at windows; its near-glacial breath
Soon gave the smart foyer the cold chill of death.
The woman, whose pacing this last quarter-hour
Had echoed like gunshots, an expression sour
Upon her fine features, now glanced at her watch
And she, fortified from some well-hidden scotch,
Now called down the stairs, to the studio-den,
"I'm waiting, my darling, turn off CNN!"
An acknowledging grunt from the basement was heard;
The tv's loud blaring was clicked off mid-word.
A shuffling, shambling climb up the stair
And Hoagie emerged with an ill-tempered glare.

^^ Loving the gothic Poe vibe to this one K_Dubb!

High praise indeed, Zeebs, thank you, but you'll want to take it back after the end hahaha

Probably just a geological anomaly I think. A spoon makes no sense since there appears to be a decomposed Chinese food container next to it, along with some fossilized wontons. Chop sticks would make sense.
That container could have been for egg-drop soup.  :o  MMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmm.

Good to know there's Chinese Take Out Food on Mars for when, ya know, we get there. ;D

His hair had now grown to a length never seen,
And the smoke from his pipe was a faint shade of green.
His elegant coiffure was in disarray;
His skin, never healthy, distinctively gray.
His old smoking jacket was crusty with food;
The body inside unmistakably nude.
A repurposed bolo now served as a belt,
And its sorry drooping sure matched how he felt.
His breath, when he spoke, was a foul-scented reek.
He lurched and he stammered; his posture was weak.
"The wine bar!  You promised!" she cried with dismay,
With vanishing visions of cold chardonnay,
A red flush of anger discolored her cheeks.
"You've watched cable news now for near on eight weeks!"
He balefully stared at his fair paramour,
And "Impudent strumpet!" he cried with a roar,
"Your Trumping's at fault and the torsion field's gone;
The meter is broken on my Accutron!
The bad, getting worse, have co-opted the nation;
I need a new reading for recalibration."

This has been my favorite Christmas tale this season K_Dubb. It's got a dark feel to it like "The Nightmare Before Christmas."

Oh thank you, but you haven't seen the end, for which I am truly, truly sorry in advance.  I expect nothing but stony indifference after that horror.

I have seen not this thread in it seems, quite some time,
so it must have been fated I read K_Dubbs rhyme.

Thank You Kind Sir!   :-*

Oh good! I didn't think you were quite done yet.  ;D This is a real treat to read them in a serial format.

Brig, dear, I beg you to avert your eyes at Christmas.  I am so ashamed.

Hahaha not a chance!  I half-considered trying to figure out how to do an anonymous login just to post this puerile filth, but I thought it'd be too obvious.

Well, no replay announced as of typing. Could a new show be in a hurried preparation for this evening?

Oh thank you, but you haven't seen the end...

I would subscribe to this.

You don't disappoint, and your content makes sense; plus, you can dance to it.

Thank you, but the bar for poetry is very low these days.  I warn you, I am about to limbo right under it.

You can never do wrong now after bringing us the term "impudent strumpet".

But I appear as Aesop's crow, bedecked with others' feathers -- it is from Othello.

I prefer my strumpets impatient not impudent.

Yes but yours was uttered by an even greater Shakespearean character.   ;)
