Should MV ban neosporin/antiseptics?

Started by Camazotz Automat, July 02, 2016, 09:00:21 PM

Are we allowed to discuss our various, favorite over-the-counter drugs and supplements?

Vitamins, herbs, topical applications ...

I always had good luck with Primatene Mist as a minor pick me up.   You're up late, trying to figure out some kind of computer problem...trying to fight that goddamned Black Knight hacker son of a bitch ....  eating the obligatory Cheetos and drinking your favorite soft drink... getting a little sleepy...

A quick puff of epinephrine and neurons are vibrating again.

Now it's no longer available... it was banned....  oh, but you can get a prescription EpiPen...  but Primatene Mist was destroying the ozone layer, so fuck you, script kitty.  And THEN when Primatene Mist FINALLY said they would use a different propellant, what happened?  A "group" said it was dangerous, and despite it being used safely for DECADES by asthmatics, it was just too dangerous for the average consumer... so suddenly, it wasn't about the ozone layer anymore... it was about the drug itself.  Fucking conspiracy. Pharmaceutical cabal bastards.

I don't WANT an EpiPen.  I want a tiny puff of Primatene Mist you godless wankers.

But the medical industry wasn't getting a cut from Primatene Mist.

Changing gears.

I used to buy this Kava kava root extract.  Two tiny drops in a large glass of carbonated water.  It looked like a small atomic bomb when the drops hit the water.  You know, like something Grandpa Munster mixed up downstairs.

Bitter taste.

But I would have the most interesting and vivid dreams that night.  Just two drops.  A small bottle would last a year, easily.  I didn't take it daily as advised. I UNDER-USED it.

I told a friend...

"Ed, you should check this out.  I bought it at the health food store.  It's mildly psychoactive as far as dream state augmentation.  Tastes a little bitter."

He always sounded incredibly like Bullwinkle, by the way.

He said:

"Uhmmmm, that might lead to harder stuff...."  (Watch me pull a rabbit out of this hat.)

WTF?

That was many years ago.  Recently, I mentioned it to a friend and she warned me direly about liver damage.  I don't think she understood how little I was taking and how long ago that was.  Meanwhile, she pops almost TWENTY different supplements a day, and she is lecturing ME about stress on the liver?  She was always lecturing.  We don't talk anymore.  I decided she was toxic to my liver.

So.  Ban us if you wish, MV.  I don't care.  There are others here with their own stories about over-the-counter recreational substances.

I also think hydrogen peroxide is a minor miracle.  Monkey's Blood  is also cool.

Mercurochrome though, that's just fucking insane.  No argument from me on that one.

That's all I got.  I've to to go pop some vitamin D3 and rub some witch hazel on my ass and wait for the machine elves appear.

When I was a kid I experienced the Primatene lift. Not much into OTC's but every once in a while, mostly in winter, I'll go out and pick some American Ephedra (E. Viridis) for a little pick me up tea. Unlike the Chinese species which is loaded with ephedrine, the American species contains iso-psuedoephedrine as its active ingredient. Slightly milder buzz than its oriental cousin. But my fave tea to get a little jazz on with is two thirds coca leaves and one third mate', steeped in a french press, then lightly sweetened with honey. Great for the winter doldrums.

I don't take many drugs but when I do it is usually old stand-bys like Aspirin, which I like in powder form. In the rare case of a cold I like Vicks Vap-O-Rub but not the "new" versions. Compare some older stock I have and a new (though this was generic version.) Note the missing key ingredients! Also, I recall a decade, or so ago, some product (maybe "Contac"?) that was advertised by that older lawyer on "LA Law" that was taken off the market but really worked for colds and allergies.
I just use high strength rubbing alcohol on cuts (it hurts but I reckon it will kill anything) and then treat as appropriate with bandage or whatever. I limit use of hydrogen peroxide to 'one use' if a particular nasty/dirty road rash or something and scrub with soap and water and then bandage as appropriate. I had a friend who was under the impression that peroxide should be used daily after a motorcycle peg punctured his leg in a wreck. Basically, he had a hole in his leg for quite some time because he kept debriding it by using it and the use wasn't it letting his body heal over. He went to doc, finally, who said, never use that stuff, except maybe initially. His scar now looks like a GSW. I will use as a mouthwash sometimes though. For sore neck etc you can find 'old time' salves and liniment remedies if you look in the 'ethnic' areas of the pharmacy or grocery store. Also you can find things like vitamins, aspirin, etc in powder or effervescent form there. Some folks buy the "animal" versions at the general or ag store but I never have. I'm guessing the stuff for horses would be too powerful for me even if I have a sore back sometimes! Witchhazel I use after I shaved one too many times with the same blade. I think you can buy Mercurochrome in Mexico and some European countries still but banned here.

You, sir, are on the list.  You seem to tolerate my particular brand of madness well.

And just like that.  Even with a whimsical topic title, we've got helpful data from Mr. Plants of the Gods Himself.

Whimsy works.

I never say no to a BC powder.  Regarding alcohol, I recall a bellgabber mentioning long ago that they had tossed their rubbing alcohol and kept Everclear in the medicine chest. It might have been FightTheFuture.  I'm not sure what the advantage was, though it might have been explained.  I'm assuming less toxicity or less harsh.  Sometimes it's more fun to guess than to google every tiny thing I'm discussing, but if anyone wants to google that, maybe we'll get an answer.

Also, I had no idea that they had re-tooled the Vic's Vap formula.

On the subject of antiseptics, years ago I read a Reader's Digest article called, Mercurochrome and Methylate: The Red Menaces Lurking in Your Medicine Cabinet, and ever since I will only use rubbing alcohol, iodine, and for particularly nasty puncture wounds, cauterization.  Thoughts?

Carburetor cleaner works good for poison ivy rash way better than anything sold at the store. I accidentally discovered it when i had poison ivy and was rebuilding the carb on my cub cadet. It was dried up the following day and works even better if you scratched the blisters open and spray it on.

Allerest.  The old stuff, from the last century.  An innocuous looking blue tablet.  Great stuff.  I only used it during hay fever season, when it really bothered me.  Bring it!

Now?  it's just not the same.  Damn drug Nazis.  Can we still use that word, MV?

This will mean something to many of those who traffic here.

I offer an instantaneous olfactory déjà vu:

Campho-Phenique

Ah, yes.  Or this!

I prefer the Junior's piquant, stimulating aroma to the overpowering, female-repellent properties of BenGay.  Not that there's anything wrong with it.

No! to the the Ben-Gay smell. Yes, to Campophenque and Absorbine, Jr. I saw something at the store called "McLEAN'S VOLCANIC OIL LINIMENT" that looked promising but was actually fairly expensive. Also, for indigestion, the Mexican brand "Picot" is effervescent and works well (found in the ethnic medical aisle.)

I'm sure Charlie Sheen wants everyone to forget he starred in The Wraith (1986.)

Not going to happen.  Sorry, er... Charlie.

It's worth watching just to check out the car and Sherilyn Fenn.  (though the scenes with Randy Quaid cause deep deep hurting)

Your comments reminded me of these characters in The Wraith who favored the non-traditional use of automobile related products:

Why, hello, Ms. Fenn.

Damn.  I'd forgotten about the luscious Ms. Fenn.  I didn't think that was possible.

She shouldn't be kept in a box, that's for sure.

I used to love my NyQuil.  It was like a soothing tonic to my nerves, and a kind friend on sleepless nights, as it helped me drift off effortlessly into dreamland.  Now it's as useful as soda pop, without the pop.

That used to be some pretty good stuff.  I haven't used it in years.  Sounds like it went the same way as Allerest.  A sucky new formulation.  Now I just turn on Noory to knock myself out.

If you ever get truckers bag, soak your smelly sac in a 70/30% mix of 3% hydrogen peroxide/rubbing alcohol, for 5 minutes, follow with a nice hot shower.
Guarenteed to have your man satchel in spic'n span shape for your favourite fellator.

To get a similar taste and effect at this point, it's probably better to skip straight to a shot of Jagermeister and a Primatene Mist tablet (ephedrine) which they still sell, but you have to sign an oath each time you purchase, swearing you're not running a meth lab.

The meth labs ruined it for everyone.

And yet, I find this talk of showers, extreme temperatures, and chemicals a bit disturbing.  I have to say, it brings to mind a type of Spermolocaust.

Thank you.  Thank you.  And goodnight.

Couldn't agree more about the meth labs. Before and after tweaking pictures like these of "Cuddles" taken six months apart sent a powerful message to the usual fearful, credulous demographic groups,  though, and in the ensuing legislative overreaction to their irrational panic, babies were thrown out with the bathwater as usual, especially casual, non-violent ephedrine users. Don't get me started.

And what's the solution to stop the godless heathens running meth labs?  Why punish everybody else, of course, with more rules, regulations, bureaucracy, and general crap the meth men will circumvent anyway.  Thank yeeewww, you bastard, self-serving, weasel lawyers, masquerading as "representatives of the people."

Public hangings.  They're just not for breakfast.

Education is the number one tool to fight future meth user traffic.  This whole paranoid reaction of making a person sign an electronic form at the pharmacy to get Primatene tablets, or pseudo fed; or this sneaky business of companies changing the formulas to dupe the consumer into thinking she is buying the original product; it is not the way to go.  It  has not decreased the activity of meth cooking labs.  But it has effectively and significantly caused more ~headaches~ for the general, normal citizen who has sinus pain, asthma, allergies, etc., and that is a HUGE segment of the population.  I'm convinced the Primatene Mist epinephrine inhaler fiasco was Big Pharma lobbying for legislation to ultimately force asthmatics to get on a prescription inhaler, while the pseudofed and ephedrine laws were misguided overreactions to meth labs.

The entire foundation of the brilliant Breaking Bad series was to shine a light on the fact that organized crime meth cooks are upping their game with high quality chemicals purchased in bulk, creating drugs that are more effective and dangerous.

Forcing my Aunt CC to sign a legal document to buy fucking allergy meds (previously available straight off the shelf) is offensive and is like the TSA patting down or X-raying every damned passenger.  It is overkill.  It is mindless.  And ultimately, it is ineffective.  And for my aunt, it was embarrassing, so I do it for her.  Ridiculous. ***

We've lost common sense.

*** A silver lining is that I am doing a very small favor for her that shows my appreciation for the countless wonderful meals she has prepared and continues to prepare for me ... meals from ~the old country.~    The type of meal I will be enjoying shortly.  Heh.
