Oops... Or "check out my avatar."

WOTR

If it is true that an online avatar can affect my real life behavior, I worry a little what I must be like as a person... "How you represent yourself in the virtual world of video games may affect how you behave toward others in the real world"

http://www.psychologicalscience.org/index.php/news/releases/virtual-avatars-may-impact-real-world-behavior.html

"“In virtual environments, people can freely choose avatars that allow them to opt into or opt out of a certain entity, group, or situation,” says Yoon. “Consumers and practitioners should remember that powerful imitative effects can occur when people put on virtual masks.”

And, what a virtual (gas) mask that I have chosen as of late.

(By the way, this is known as the Proteus effect, if you want to actually look it up.)

So... Do you actually buy any of this?  Any idea how your avatar would actually contribute to how you act in your "real" life?

So, if that's true, I just want someone to give me a saltine cracker? ;)

My post won't make any sense when I change my "parrot" avatar lol.

I think that avatars may serve as more of a projection mechanism, such as a Rorschach test does.

As someone correctly guessed (not SV) it's me in my avatar.

You look great in a pair of stockings.

GravitySucks

As for me, I guess I have hung out at a bunch of space bars.

Not so much anymore. Ghosts of Christmas past.

If only he'd do something about those cottage cheese thighs.  ::)

I look hot. Great is for mere mortals. The heads turn when I walk up steps and my clips give way.

Anyway, that was when my defence collapsed. Bail was fixed at £10 and a visit to the magistrate.

I imagine Scarlet Macaws say things like, "Fiddle dee dee. Tomorrow is another day," and "As God is my witness I'll never be hungry again, so give me a saltine!"  :D

I had to stare at that for a few minutes, but it finally jumped out at me.  That's brilliant!  I definitely wouldn't kick that parrot out of bed for eating saltines!  ;D

Your gaming persona is an extension of yourself in a way.  While I'm not the type to smash keyboards and throw game controllers around the room it worries me that A LOT of it goes on with the younger generation.  I know a kid (12 year old) who will throw a FIT if I beat him in a game.  I refuse to play anything that isn't co-op with him at this point.  I came up with video games but they weren't as immersive as the games out now.  More and more it seems like our younguns are spending all their free time gaming or online.  I feel like I may have dodged a major psychological bullet being born when I was... but the generations that are coming up now???

I've witnessed children that won't leave the computer to go get a cup of pepsi from the fridge... wonder how that will translate to taking out the trash or voting later on in life?  or could it possibly even translate into psycopathia?

oh yeah happy new year n shit

edit: i just realized my avatar choice puts me in a bit of the psychopathic category

Video games are a problem. Sadly, it is also a solution for parents that for whatever reason don't spend time with their kids in a healthy manner. It is pernicious. I see clients in their homes. They have little discretionary income but many have 50+inch televisions with one or more gaming systems connected. When I suggest spending time outside playing catch or other type of activity, I am looked at like I am from another planet.

Even with my son, who is now in his thirties, it was a bitch getting him away from video games while he was in high school.

Wow!  That is beautiful!  Deco?  Is it glass? cast iron, bronze,  pot metal?  Does it also function, like maybe as a nut-cracker or something? Looks like the leg is hinged at the hip. If the leg was upwards what could it hold?  Rings, that would look like garters?

It took me a _long_ time see what was going on in the upper half. Fabulous!
Thanks
