Internet radio can be heard on computer or smart phones or tablet or specialist radio:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=Internet%20radio&index=blended
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=wi-fi%20radio&index=blended

###################################

AND of course the 2 big online radio search engines:
You can search & listen to over 100,000 streams online now.
Search by keyword: subject or station name or genre or location or person

1) Shoutcast search engine: mainly internet stations with many terrestrials too.
Search for: art bell
http://www.shoutcast.com/Search

2) UberStations search engine: mainly terrestrial radios online, search by city too:
http://www.uberstations.com/

For example search for: New York, gives
http://uberstations.com/?zipcode=10001
Los Angeles search gives:
http://uberstations.com/?zipcode=90001

If searching uberstations.com: Do not play any stations or defaults to your local IP Number stations.
Fix: Close that web page, open again and do not play any station and type search keyword.

Art COULD pursue several different options. But, why would he want to? I think art is more suited, if not happier, being the old man on the mountain, dispensing his little nuggets of wisdom through the various social media outlets.

Art doesn't really lecture people but hunts down the most interesting people and interviews them. Also if not using various public radio protocols how can he broadcast through "various social media outlets"? You mean instead of radio he should use facebook twitter Instagram? I don't understand, how?

Wintermute

SXM won't touch Art Bell. Just not going to happen. They don't need him and they don't want another headache.

I'm still laying odds on Art Bell doing a 1 day a week podcast w/ a few multi-days sprinkled in like on New Years or Halloween. Doing any more would require a sizable staff and $$$. Once a week podcast is a lot of work then you edit the audio, book guests and push market.

washere

These days everyone is doing a DIY radio studio with low-budget or no-budget  and guests on Skype or similar. Art is an old Ham himself too, and well setup.

He sometimes screened callers and sometimes didn't as they got straight through. So no problems there at first and he's experienced in handling folk, unlike most.

He sold knye but I think he has a lot of shares in C2C and gets money from Premiere for it, I think, hence the non-compete.

sXM and satellite wasn't ideal anyway. He likes live radio and might do weekends or 4 nights on whatever protocol, terrestrials or HD or internet streams. Once he has a few affiliates, easy by having different time-slot than c2c as he's in demand, and the new show has revenue (nvm ads) he can do whatever next in terms of affiliate marketing staff or production staff.

I hope Art can stay on the air for awhile next time. Oh yeah, FUCK YOU DAVE NOORY!

Wintermute

Well, two things stand in the way of affiliates:

1. They will want a more than one day a week of content and I am not sure Bell is up for it.

2. Other than non-profit conglomerates like Pacifica Radio (http://www.pacifica.org), the other stations are corporately held. So Bell would have to, again, sign a contract and commit to a specific amount of content.

I truly don't know many "once a week" podcasters that have moved their exact show into full, 5-day, broadcast formats. However, I do know a lot that have done the opposite.

I think Art could still get affiliates. He said pre dark matter 3 OTHER networks including premier offered him a show at any time slot.
Someone will be willing to take a gamble there is too much $$$ to be possibly made. It's risky because he might quit but it's worth the risk the way listner numbers for talk radio have been lately.

I think ARt is absurd if he think a internet only DMRN show will get him callers.he needs affiliates at least a few for a call in driven show.

Wintermute

Well, I think most of us know that Art's perceived issues with SXM were absurd as well. I still do not understand them.
** Streaming - never had an issue that wasn't on my end. And it has nothing to do with call-ins.
** Truckers on cell phones? I had a cell phone in 1998 and my guess is that by 2003 most of the call-ins were cell phone calls.
** Truckers streaming the show? If you are an SXM subscriber, odds are you have an SXM receiver in your vehicle thus no stream needed.

I am not saying Art cannot get an affiliate. He just can't get one with a once-a-week show on any large corporate-owned station. He would have to commit to more content.

And for everyone that keeps saying "He's an old HAM operator... yada yada". Internet podcasting is completely different than operating a radio or being a radio engineer. Sorry, but they are two different things and require two different knowledge bases. Podcast production is far more like NPR than it is your local AM talk station that hasn't changed it's SOP in 30yrs other than adding an IceCast uplink.

I propose that Art conduct his show via snail mail.

* Well I am not an idiot when it comes to techie stuff yada yada.. Suffice to say I've done post grad research in computing & AI in top universities and many years of commercial IT work in complex projects using many different languages & systems. I know the difference between HAM & computers. If I can program huge commercial projects of different protocols and can simulate cutting edge neural net consciousness I just might not be dismissed that easily as a techie idiot.

* Podcasts is not only one sort of system. That is an error to say so. Podcast can be very complex with various revenue schemes, affiliates to ads to click thru to other schemes needing various streaming tricks and website/blog methods and db programming to much more.

A podcast can also be just recording an audio file (mp3) and uploading it to the cloud or a site or social or blog etc. and that link is the podcast! I can set up a few applications and bookmarks and teach a granny to press a few buttons to just press top record and upload and save the link.

There are numerous other methods of podcasts in between the very complex and the very simple podcasts. Many shades of grey. So saying podcast technique is this.. is not true. It can take many forms, complex to simple.

* However all these podcasts are pointless to Art and irrelevant next year. He is only messing about now because his hands are tied due to non-compete.

* I repeat: ART WANTS TO DO LIVE SHOWS INTERVIEWING GUESTS WITH CALL-INS. Archiving them for re-sale, as with c2c insider (members only podcast) is just extra feature and revenue to him, NOT THE MAIN THING.

As to the other issues:

His commercial negotiations are just speculation here. He'll get the best deal he can in 2015, the rest is theory.

It will be a nightly show, some hosted by him. Whatever is accepted by whoever is irrelevant. He'll have a show and whoever likes to affiliate they can. He can time it after or before c2c as I said too.

* I'd say get a new brand, not Dark Matter, a new name and logo
* Own it %100, rest on part time salary with tight contracts for future non compete or setup
* Use old timers he knows, or ladies he knows, or people who are proven to be decent and honest and not greedily jumping on the para bandwagon
* test people too, I think despite his critical view of c2c, para > politics, he liked john B. Wells just tell him to focus ion para. Lisa gar is good too though not para as such. Knapp can be used. Tom Danheiser bullied and banned a few minor guests from c2c because they were on art's shows on DM. He cant do that to linda, knappy, hoagy (wheres he? banned) etc if they sort something out before hand.

bottom line is he should get decent people and they can do 3 or 4 nights a week or whatever.

OK he might not get 700 affiliates, he doesn't want that at this stage anyway, but whatever he gets it will pay for itself.

And if he is an old hand at electronics and HAM he can push a few buttons on the screen to broadcast which is what I said and what many guys & gals who do not know ANYTHING about computers are already doing and broadcasting on systems set up for them for very little money these days. If they are already doing it and broadcasting so can Art. In fact he is already set up well and used to operating such systems.

Even if he wants to do a couple of shows a week or whatever and carried by a few stations he.ll be happy. Who is on the rest of the week, if any, that he chooses is not the main thing either.

The rest: on other hosts or how many stations or how much profit etc. is details.

Bottom line, regardless of number of audience or xm/internet/HD/terrestrials/etc. or how much profits or who else etc.: fans want to hear Art do LIVE radio again, so does he.

Does anyone besides me think it would be a smart business move if Art decided to *give away* his show, at least for a period of time, to both terrestrial and XM radio in order build up his fan base quickly again?   Since he'll just be working for himself, he'll be making all the money from his advertisers.  He really can afford to just give the show away if he so chooses.  With that, many terrestrial stations will carry his show and he will kill Coast to Coast.

That's what he used to do. It's a barter method. The affiliates would negotiate the amount of time they could have to play their commercials during his show. Art generally placed the commercials at the top and bottom of the hour. I think it was 5 or 6 minutes they would have to work with while Art reserved the last 30, 45, or 60 seconds for his advertisers. I think he also did it to allow his guests to answer the call of nature.

This time around it would serve Art better to have his App placed on his affiliates websites. It would drive traffic to both the affiliates websites and to Art's show, or should it be called a program instead?

Streaming it on the websites does not exclude adding broadcast at some later date. Probably after the affiliates get tired of having their sites crash and burn.  ;D

i think Art should change the show. he should have all the usual guests and openly debunk them. heck, i can think of three that would return over and over. bet you do too.

Curious, how many people absurdly emailed, or absurdly called you about the service they weren't getting?

oooh I see..... :o

When Art and Keith Rowland were giving out hints of Art's return before Dark Matter was announced, Bellgab poster Lonevoice contacted her local radio station to see if she could trick them into revealing Art's plans.  She got a reply from the radio exec which said something about Dave Noorie having taken over Coast to Coast AM.  For some time after that, Dave was a derogatory name Bellgab adopted for George, signalling his insignificance in the industry.

agreed.

b_dubb

what if Art made his show open source?  he streamed it from his place in NV then terestrial stations could pick up the stream and broadcast it for free?  he could generate revenue from pimping ccrane radios and turd vaporizers.

agreed.

I also agree - there's no way he'll get a wide call in audience with internet only, at least in the beginning.

That's essentially what I said.   It's kind of surprising that a lot of the bigger guys don't do something like this.  It's all about getting your show out there, and if you're opening up live ad slots for stations, you know damned well there are many small stations who would take advantage of great free content, as long as they could rely on it and probably not have to worry about swear words or something.   Any talent could then completely control their show.

If I had the money, I'd start doing this myself - buying up smaller radio stations and pimping out free content on the air.    I don't think most shows would mind the exposure.   You could cherry pick the best shows, and even if they weren't live you could broadcast them at specific times so that people could enjoy them on their daily commutes or whenever they regularly listen.
