Some New Features
« on: July 10, 2011, 07:49:22 PM »
Hi, all.  I've just performed a major update to the software backend behind this forum.  Hopefully you'll notice some improvements here and there.  Please clear your cache by clicking SHIFT + REFRESH.

You'll notice a new feature here or there, but the most useful is the new "drafts" feature.  As you'd guess, it allows you to save a draft of the post you're working on to the server before actually posting it.  Also, you'll notice your posts are automatically saved to "drafts" every 30 seconds while working on them.  Access your saved drafts by clicking profile/profile info/show posts/drafts.  Drafts are removed when you post them.  Nobody can see your drafts but you.  Pretty handy, eh?  I know some of you, myself included, would have benefited greatly from this feature in the past.

Also, you can now export your personal messages to a downloadable .XML file.  I implemented this feature because while I do recommend that you purge your PM inbox from time to time for security reasons, I also realize you might not actually want to LOSE all of your private messages.

I have also removed the ability of users to change the subject of a thread they are posting in.  This will help to preserve the intent of threads you create.

There's also now a Facebook "Like" button on the first post of each thread.  Yeah, I know.  Please consider clicking it from time to time if you are a Facebook user.  It'll help drive some traffic our way.

There is now a floating "Back To Top" button in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Thumbs up here, too.  Some kick-ass major improvements without that "slap-in-the-face-we're-fixin'-it-for-ya" kind of attitude.

Thank you, Michael V!!

PS:  And I'm old(-er) and I usually HATE change! :P

i have disabled the auto-save feature for drafts.  it doesn't appear to be working correctly, and i don't want users to be fooled into depending on it.  however, the "save as draft" button DOES work correctly, and will remain in place.

cheers!

Sometimes the most important aspects of a subject are not immediately obvious. Keep reading to get the complete picture. When word gets around about your command of New Features facts, others who need to know about New Features will start to actively seek you out.

I'm starting a MLM pyramid scheme called "New Features."
It will be completely new.
And it will have lots of features.

i have enabled the "buddy list" feature.  it's described here:
http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=207.0

however, the real reason why i enabled the buddy list is because it ALSO enables the ignore list.  with it, you can ignore users whose posts and private messages you don't want to see.  i think that's a sweet option for users to have.  it's all managed through the "your profile" link in the menu.

the ignore list will prevent SO MANY moderation problems going forward because if people complain to me about someone, i can tell them to place the user on their ignore list.  absolutely no involvement required on my part.  that's always a nice thing.

Nice pic, MV, but me thinks you need to haul your butt over to Jenny Craig. That one piece bathing suit is a little snug on ya, don't you think?

yes.  i have increased the number of posts and the period of time used to calculate percentage.  it was too easy to hit 100%.

forget it.  tapatalk is now dead to me and will never be used again on this forum.  after enabling it, i'm noticing the following error is randomly displayed when you post a message:

Quote
Wrong value type sent to the database. Array of integers expected. (quoteids)

it's a known issue with tapatalk and is able to be fixed with a patch.  sooo... i go to the tapatalk website to download the patch, and it requires that i login.  fine.  but i can't login.  their system won't accept my password.  why?  beats me.

i don't really care to deal with this silliness.  tapatalk sucks.

in a few months i'm going to switch the forum over to an entirely new system called wedge.  it's my understanding that this forum software (when it's done) will scale really well on a mobile device, anyway.  it sort of obviates the need for something like tapatalk.

Oh no! Will this newfangled technology make my typewriter television blow up?

You know we hate change, MV. We get all upset and cranky. The cords on the CoastGab vending machines get all chewed up and I'm sure I don't know who does it. Fights break out. Transvestites strip and mass vomiting occurs. People confess to ugly things.

Now.

What is it you're going to change? Cuz I gotta find a hidey hole somewhere.

I never used it, but I never liked how that message would always pop up every time I tried to access CG from my iPhone and iPad.  To hell with apps made to access specific Web sites.

Now.

What is it you're going to change? Cuz I gotta find a hidey hole somewhere.

If you start searching for a hidey hole, i think you'll be running when you're not being chased, as they say.

The new forum software will look more modern. It will consume fewer server resources. It will run well on mobile devices without the need for an app between you and the forum. It will do more things natively instead of relying on outdated, unsupported software addons. The new software's developers don't seem to be consumed by political squabbles. Its being developed at a reasonable pace rather than taking 4 years or so to move from one version to the next (as happened with SMF, the software currently responsible for making CoastGab work). It won't reload the whole page every time you click something...

I could go on and on about the benefits we will see when the switch is made from SMF to Wedge. However, Wedge development is still far from complete and I plan to wait a few extra months beyond "completion" to use it because I don't feel like using CoastGab as a software testing experiment. I'll let other people do that with their forums, thank you very much.

Wedge.org is their website.

Now we can put a wedge between Noory and Coast to Coast AM.

Ow, ow...hot coffee through my nose.  Yes, I know better than to have liquid anything nearby when I wander around this site.
My bad.          ::)

We now have the ability to easily view CoastGab's member list through the main menu.
